Flower power prunes pests
Our keystone paper, just out in Nature Plants, shows a double benefit to rice farmers from growing nectar-producing flowers or crops in the field margins. Rice yields are increased by 5% on average and the need for insecticide sprays is reduced by 70%. All this adds up to greater profits. It all works by the nectar sources attracting beneficial insects that reduce pests by 10 or even 100-fold. The results come for a four-year, multi site study spanning China, Vietnam and Thailand.
Seems it really is possible to use ecological approaches to reduce the need for synthetic inputs and actually increase crop yields!
