Future work trends in 2023 and beyond

Get ready for the future of work! With 2023 in full swing, new work trends are emerging, bringing exciting changes and opportunities for both companies and employees. This newsletter covers some of the exciting changes happening in the recruitment space and how companies are working towards creating a more inclusive and supportive workplace culture.

Quiet Hiring

One of the biggest buzzwords of 2023 is "quiet hiring”, where companies focus on internal talent development rather than recruiting externally. Here are some reasons why it is a positive shift in how companies are managing their resources and supporting their employees:

  • According to Gartner research, quiet hiring is one of the nine "Future of Work Trends for 2023".
  • Emily Rose McRae of Gartner's HR Practice notes that quiet hiring is becoming a trend partly due to a talent shortage.
  • Rather than lay off workers, companies are moving employees around internally to fill roles.
  • This trend can also lead to employees acquiring new skills and exploring new opportunities within the company.
  • Employees like the opportunity to upskill and increase their knowledge in terms of skills they acquire in a role.
  • Quiet hiring provides a way for companies to acquire new talent without the need for a large recruitment drive.
  • For employees, it presents a chance for professional growth and development within their current role.

So, if you hear about quiet hiring in the future, don't worry, it's a sign that companies are prioritising their employees' growth and development while still meeting their business needs.

Hybrid Work and Flexibility

Hybrid work looks like to be a rising trend for 2023 and beyond, becoming an essential way of working for many companies in the post-pandemic era. While 16% of all the companies globally are fully remote, some businesses may not feel at ease with this arrangement. Hybrid work environment is emerging as a compromise:

  • Recent surveys show that around 62% of employees aged 22 to 65 work under a hybrid plan, making it the most popular work setup
  • Nearly 90% of employees who have the opportunity to utilise a hybrid work arrangement take it, indicating that this setup is becoming increasingly preferred by workers.
  • The flexibility offered by hybrid work arrangements is also a potent recruitment strategy for businesses, given the growing demand for remote jobs.
  • By providing flexibility, companies can not only retain employees but also recruit new ones, and it can also be a powerful retention tool for frontline workers.

As we move towards a more permanent period of hybrid work for desk-based professionals, the future of work seems to be heading towards a more flexible work environment where people can work from anywhere and at any time.

Pursuit of non-traditional candidates

2023 is shaping up as an exciting time for recruitment and hiring practices, with organisations taking significant steps towards diversifying their talent pipelines and embracing unconventional candidates:

  • Nonlinear career paths: Employees are pursuing careers outside of their current area of expertise and applying for jobs in different fields. To keep up with this trend, organisations must be open to evaluating candidates solely on their ability to perform in the role, rather than their prior experience.
  • Traditional methods are no longer sufficient: With the rise of unconventional career paths, organisations can no longer rely on traditional methods of sourcing talent. Managers must be willing to consider alternative solutions, such as outsourcing or offshoring talent or utilising the gig economy.
  • Diversity is key: Pursuing non-traditional candidates is a great way to expand and diversify your talent pipeline. This not only brings fresh perspectives and skills to the table but also helps to create a more inclusive workplace.
  • Urgency to act: The competition for top talent grows fiercer. By rethinking outdated assumptions about qualifications and focusing on skills, organisations can tap into a wider pool of candidates and find the right people for the job.

In short, the pursuit of non-traditional candidates is an essential strategy for expanding and diversifying talent pipelines in 2023. By focusing on skills rather than credentials, and being open to alternative solutions, organisations can successfully navigate the changing workforce landscape.

Growing Attention On Employee Well-Being

A positive shift is taking place in the workplace as a result of recent challenges. According to the survey by Deloitte, companies are increasingly recognising the importance of treating their employees as whole persons, with a focus on supporting their overall well-being. As Gartner reports, 82% percent of surveyed individuals say it is important that their organisations see them as a whole person, rather than simply an employee. To achieve this, good organisations will introduce proactive measures to help employees maintain their emotional resilience and performance:

  • Offering proactive paid-time-off (PTO), allotted wellness time, and no-meeting Fridays. Managers can also be evaluated based on their team's adequate PTO to encourage a healthy work-life balance.
  • In addition, businesses may provide opportunities for open discussion on challenging subjects without judgment or consequences, hire counsellors to provide on-site counselling and coaching for managers on workplace conflict and difficult conversations.
  • Employers should also offer better wellness benefits, instructions in mental health first aid, and making workplace modifications to create a positive and supportive environment for their staff.

While the pandemic has had a significant impact on employees, best organisations will create a healthier and more productive workplace for their staff in 2023 and beyond. By prioritizing their employees' overall well-being, businesses can foster a positive and supportive work culture that benefits everyone.
