Heard about Modernization of a tune?

In today's world, the word "Modernization" has gained lot of importance. In the software side, every company wants to modernize their IT systems as their software has become too old and difficult to maintain. Modernization techniques are categorized and called as 6R's - Rehost, Replatform, Refactor/Rearchitect,Repurchase, Retain and Retire. There are lot of articles in the internet which talks in detail about each modernization techniques.

In this post, we talk about the music industry and in particular the film music genre, where the topic of modernization has been used knowingly or unknowingly. Though the exact definition of 6R's in software cannot be relevant to music, we can try to build a relation between the modernization techniques used in software to music.

Disruption in Music industry

Coming to music industry, there are lot of changes happened and happening due to digitization and technology disruption, specifically in the areas of music recording, storing and playback. Now, any form of instrument (String, Wind, Percussion) can be played electronically in Keyboards and Synthesizers. My personal opinion though is that the overuse of technology in music has killed the "life" in a song (which is a separate discussion altogether and not a subject of relevance to this topic).

Recording and Playback mechanisms have changed from LP records(magnetic) to Digital to Cloud. Being a 90's kid, I had the privilege to listen songs in cassette/tape recorders, Compact Discs, DVD , Blue Ray and from Cloud.

I am going to take one particular example - "A Tune", which has undergone some of the R's in the Modernization techniques over a period of three decades. A tune is like an infrastructure for a software, where the musician adds the necessary instruments, lyrics, voices and orchestrate them to form a complete song which can be recorded & played back / performed on the go. Just to correlate with software industry, the term "orchestration" has gained more significance now outside music industry due to the Microservice architecture and Cloud technologies where we have software like Kubernetes and Rancher doing the orchestration work for the software to run.

This tune has 7 lives....

I was always overjoyed and overwhelmed to talk anything about this musician (magician) called "Ilayaraja". He was rightly called as "Maestro Ilayaraja" for his contribution to music spanning for nearly 50 years, where he composed film songs in different Indian languages (Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, etc). His non-film contributions include albums like "How To Name It", "Nothing But Wind", "Thiruvasagam", where he brought the fusion out of Western classical and Indian classical music from the legends like Saint Thyagaraja, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, J.S. Bach and Franz Schubert. He also collaborated with the Symphony Orchestra in Budapest,Hungary for one of his albums. If you are a music lover, do give these albums a try and you won't regret.

The source of inspiration for this topic is given in the below link. This page has a video in Malayalam language and the transcript is provided in English. I would suggest you to view both the video and transcript.

In short, the article talks about how a single tune has been used(reused) 7 times - First in the year 1982 in a Malayalam movie (base version), second in a Tamil movie, third in a Telugu movie in 1986, fourth again in Tamil movie, fifth in a Hindi movie in 1996, sixth as a live orchestra in a concert in Italy(2004) and finally (seventh) again in a Hindi movie(2009).

What kind of modernization techniques used?

  1. Rehost - The tune has been re-hosted six times after it was first used in 1982 in a Malayalam movie and sung by the legendary singer, S. Janaki. Out of the six times, once the tune was hosted live in a concert as "Mood Kaapi", which is unique in a way when compared to hosting it for film music.
  2. Replatform - This is an easy picking if you compare the last version (used in the movie "Paa") and the first 3 versions. This song is an illustration of excellent usage of technology in terms of instrumentation, orchestration and presentation. The technology changed from the 1980s to 2000s but the tune remains the same.
  3. Refactor/Rearchitect - Let's take a look at the 6th version, which is presented live in a concert in Italy under the title "Mood Kappi". The presentation starts with an additional violin note and voice-over in the end by the Maestro himself. This presentation has huge improvisation to the existing tune and we might call it as Refactoring/Rearchitecting in the context of software.

Now, I was intrigued by these question - Why was the same tune used several times? Why directors of these movies wanted the same tune which was used before and did not ask for new tunes?. I found the answer in the "tune" itself. The tune is the backbone of a song and this tune gives so much soul to the song by itself and even if it is repeated 100 times, it would be heard. That is the magic of music from a magician/musician called "Ilayaraja".

This topic is a small comparison between the music and software industry when it comes to modernization. Do share your thoughts and feedback about this post in the comments section.

Disclaimer : This is my personal view about how modernization is existing in every industry, even though it is called by different names. I might be wrong with the interpretation of the techniques used in IT industry and comparison with other industries.
