How to Capture Your Audience's Attention
Hello and welcome back to my LinkedIn Newsletter! This week’s newsletter features wisdom from Pat Flynn, the author of Superfans ! Then later on today at 12 pm EDT / 9 am PDT/5 pm BST, we have my weekly Newsweek interview show, Better. This week’s guests are Deborah Grayson Riegel and Sophie Riegel, the mother and daughter co-authors that wrote Go To Help . This week’s topic is how to ask for help. Please join us here for our conversation!
As a friendly reminder, if you aren’t part of my email list, which has completely different content than this newsletter, sign up here - it has advice on personal branding, strategies to grow your business, and ways that you can lead a more fulfilling life.
In a crowded marketplace where everyone vies for everyone else’s attention, the modern attention span has dwindled significantly. Content is consumed in smaller and faster segments. How can you find people that will devote their time to you and stick around to hear what you have to say? Pat Flynn shared pearl after pearl of wisdom on how to keep your audience engaged, committed, and interested. If you’d like to hear everything we talked about last week, watch our entire interview here .
Write the lyrics to your brand
“When you listen to a song on the radio. You might love it, but you don't know necessarily who the band is, or the name of their album yet. You're not necessarily a fan, but that's where it starts when you hear a song for the first time. So speaking of songs, what's in a song that could capture attention. It's the lyrics, right? When you match the lyrics of your brand with the lyrics that your audience will respond to, that's a great way to capture attention amongst all the noise out there. You want a person to hear your message and to see your video or listen to your podcast and go, ‘Oh my gosh. Finally, somebody gets me.’”
Start a podcast
“Starting a podcast is one of the smartest things any business owner can do. Think about a video on YouTube. People watch maybe up to five minutes, and that’s doing really good, right? A person might be reading for five to ten minutes. But when you look at a podcast, you're listening to twenty, thirty minutes, an hour, sometimes more. And the reason why it's so powerful is that a podcast is the only type of content right now that can fit into a person's normal everyday life. When they're driving, when they're on a plane, when they're wherever they’re not able to watch a video or read.“

Give your audience a quick win
“My favorite way to capture attention is to offer a small quick win. Yes, we might want to change the lives of our audience and customers and students, but in order to change somebody's life, start by changing their day. First, what is something small that could be some sort of reward that activates that reptilian part of our brain to go, ‘Ooh, I want to come back to this and keep going.’ Oftentimes we can do this through a lead magnet, or it might be the article that you write or a video that solves a little friction that they finally are now able to get over, thanks to you. And of course, now they're subscribed. Now they're activated. Now they're going to come back and be a part of the community and find other people like them. Eventually what happens over time, is a person might become a super fan who will go to bat for you.”
