How do you know if healthcare AI tools are reliable and validated?

Big question of the month: What does it take for healthcare AI to be considered truly reliable and validated?

As AI technologies become more integrated into healthcare systems, we need to make sure that they are both reliable and validated. We must build trust among providers and patients, ensuring that the tools are dependable and can deliver consistent, accurate results.

Clinical validation is a critical factor in this process.

In a high-stakes domain like healthcare, rigorous testing and peer-reviewed research are important to confirm the effectiveness and safety of all tools. This validation process helps mitigate risks and assures stakeholders that AI technologies meet high performance standards and comply with industry regulations.

Ensuring these solutions are trustworthy and scientifically proven is not just a technical requirement; it’s vital to safeguarding patient well-being and enhancing quality of care.

We continually conduct objective research to provide accurate information about our AI solutions. Is AI-driven virtual triage safe and accurate?

At the end of last year, one of our studies, published in the Journal of Hospital Administration, compared the safety and accuracy of current triage guidelines (Schmitt-Thompson protocols) with innovative AI-based virtual triage.

Schmitt-Thompson protocols are the industry gold standard for rules-based triage protocols (RBTP), which are essentially a set of rules that nurses follow to give high-quality healthcare advice and triage.

In our evaluation, Infermedica's virtual triage performed as safely as Schmitt-Thompson protocols, proving that AI-based triaging solutions can perform with the same high level of precision and reliability as traditional methods.

Such research shows us the positive impact and successes that we have achieved, as well as identify areas for improvement.
