Co-organized by Cornell Transportation and Delivery Services and Tompkins County, TransportationCamp - Technology / Transportation took place on April 6th, 2019. This is the third year TransportationCamp was held at Klarman Hall and Goldwin Smith Hall, with a slight twist this year, the event was streamed live globally via Zoom and Facebook Live. The mission of the event is to engage and educate people from across the globe in the transportation and mobility fields.

During the morning of the “unconference” attendees selected subject areas (sessions) to discuss. These are then posted, organized, and selected as one hour sessions on a board. People proceeded to different breakout rooms and attended a variety of sessions for a total of eight hours. Some Transportation / Mobility Professionals attended for part of the day or the entire day, 2019's attendance ranged from 52 to 277 people from on site and across the globe during different parts of the day.

Attended via Zoom, keynote speaker was Jenny Milne (above), a researcher from the University of Aberdeen (United Kingdom) where she studies Mobility as a Service (MaaS) with a concentration in rural environments. Topics included open and closed data, and the smart transportation of people and products. Milne is also owner and transportation specialist at JLM, and is part of the Scottish Committee of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transportation.

A variety of topics were discussed such as Addressing Barriers for People with Disabilities, Transportation Network Companies (TNC) and Geofencing. Safety regarding Mobility, Grocery and RX Deliveries, Serving Last Mile / First Mile, Standardizing Measurements Across Medicaid Programs, Bike Shares, and other transportation and mobility related topics.

“I loved learning what other Mobility Managers are doing across the state to get people access. One of the best programs I attend every year,” Frank Doldo, Mobility Manager St. Lawrence County.

Another hot topic was Autonomous Vehicles (AV), “I enjoyed hearing about transportation issues in Upstate NY, including rural mobility, AVs, and equity,” Dr. Lisa Kennedy Smart Mobility Adviser, Greater Buffalo Niagara Regional Transportation Council.

This “unconference” tried to promote networking and learning about all fields regarding transportation / mobility and how fresh ideas may help create more sustainable and economic modes and uses of transportation and mobility.

“Participating in TransportationCamp is a completely fresh experience for me to engage in many transportation fields. The proposed sessions were interesting and enlightening. It was a great friendly environment and communication was fun compared to other formal conferences,” Wenzheng Li, Tompkins County Department of Social Services.

Technology has been changing quickly in the arena of carpooling / ridesharing and other transportation / mobility topics. Dawn Montanye from Way2Go Cornell Cooperative Extension Tompkins County talked about the knowledge gained by attending the event. “It's a great venue to bring our collective knowledge together about new and emerging technology. In particular we are asking questions about what on demand carpooling / ridesharing Apps exist and what are peoples' experiences. This would take an independent researcher months, we can get information and feedback on lived experiences within an hour or two."

History of TransportationCamp can be traced back to 2011 in New York City by Open Plans. In 2014 Open Plans passed the baton to Mobility Lab where Paul Mackie and his team have spread TransportationCamp across the globe. In 2019 as a pilot, TransportationCamp Ithaca live streamed the events for free via Zoom and Facebook Live. The hope was to engage across the globe about the challenges and opportunities regarding transportation / mobility. Gary, as always, this was a great TransportationCamp! The enthusiasm among everyone to discuss important topics about mobility was wonderful. And having you get us worldwide attendance and participation through technology made it even better (and I think it was a first in TransportationCamp history). I am already looking forward to next year!
