Creating a “City of Coffee” in Colombia

Endless hills covered with green plants and red berries? Sometimes coffee plantations can be much different from that. Introducing “The City of Coffee”, by the Lavazza Foundation. In Medellin, among the homes of a populous urban area, the Foundation has turned the cultivation of precious beans into an opportunity for social and economic redemption for “La Sierra” neighborhood inhabitants.

The project, developed in collaboration with ENGIM International, provided training and employment opportunities for 335 young people. Participants were provided with coffee seedlings to grow in home greenhouses and replant later, as well as training in the most innovative cultivation techniques.

Reshaping the possibilities of coffee

Our collaboration with food philosopher and international gastronomy guru Ferran Adrià is an extraordinary example of a synergy between two worlds so seemingly distant yet so close. On one side the business of making great coffee and on the other avant-garde gastronomy, both united by a common pursuit of excellence and a continuous dedication to innovation. This partnership, born over 20 years ago, has radically reshaped the way of consuming and imagining coffee, shifting it towards a taste and sensorial experience, thanks to a profound knowledge of the raw material and of extraction techniques.

The elBulli1846 Museum celebrates this extraordinary collaboration, offering visitors the chance to experience a journey along the history of the art of coffee with the 1895 Coffee Designers by Lavazza. Here, passion, expertise, and attention to the smallest of details are palpable, allowing visitors to discover how our partnership with Ferran Adrià has shaped our offerings and innovations in the world of coffee.
