Key Trends & Aspects of Online Marketing
The Approach
Macro marketing trends of 2020 and 2021 have taken a different approach due an increased number of users taking to social media during the pandemic. It’s highly unlikely that you don’t know someone that uses social media. Due to this, having social media makes you become a key target for online marketing. There are numerous techniques that encompasses online marketing such as email, social media, display advertising, search engine optimization, company websites, etc. Using these insights on trends, lets dig deeper into how companies are using these to further their business strategies.
Benefits of Online Marketing
One of the key advantages to using online channels to market is the ability to understand and measure the impressions on a given website and collect data on who is interacting with it. This data can include age, gender, browsing habits, ethnicity, etc. Once you have more data on which websites people are converted into a paying customer, you can understand which channels are more effective to narrow down your targeting tactics.
Online Marketing Examples
Canon advertises on google search words related to “photography” on Google, Yahoo, and Bing. This drives more traffic to their websites & products using the search engine optimization approach.
Back in 2013 during the Super Bowl, there was a power outage for a few minutes. During this time, Oreo created a spur of the moment ad on twitter saying the following:
This example shows that creativity is always a valuable thing to have on your marketing team. The ability to come up with ideas like this and execute on them to go viral is one of the most underrated ways to have people work for you by word of mouth. As a brand, you need to work on having relatable and unique content. Oreo also does an amazing job appealing to its target audience. People who watched Game of Thrones or went looking for the cookie around Halloween may have noticed that they customize them to appeal to more people. For example, having orange stuffing that goes with the black cookie symbolizes Halloween! How can you resist buying these for a party or snacks at home. This also encourages more people to engage with them.
The last example I’ll give you is one of my favorites. Back in 2012 LG released their IPS monitors. They asked themselves how can we convey the realism of these monitors so people believe that the image on them looks real. What better way to put out a viral video when the IPS monitors are being released to show case this. They appear to install a clear floor covering in an elevator, along with 9 monitors side by side to create the effect of the floor. When an unexpected bystander comes to use the elevator, it gives the effect that the floor is falling out from under them. Almost every single person in the video tries to jump to the railing and hold on for dear life just to find out that LG is pulling a prank on them. This not only is very creative in showing the realism conveyed by these monitors, but it also hits the customers emotions.

Applying These Ideas
If you are looking to apply these digital ideas and turn them into strategies, let me give you my point of view on how to do that.
- Invest in a well-rounded website & web design. When I say well-rounded I mean mobile friendly, attention grabbing, clean and interesting. Showcasing your brand promise and value proposition is a great way to show interesting customers what your brand is about. Like Geico, 15 minutes could save you 15% more on car insurance; you know exactly what their promise is and what they are about. Being able to view this information on Mobile is very important. One study showed that 68.1% of websites visited globally were from mobile phones. This number is up 5% Year-over-year from 2019. It also showed that the time spend on the website was 160 seconds vs 351 seconds on desktop. This shows how important it is in the first 2 minutes to keep your customers interest.

- Learn how to use Search Engine Marketing and Optimization. This strategy is often more cost-effective than other marketing tactics. There have been countless times where I won’t scroll past the first 3 choices when looking at Google so to appear in the top listings is key to digital marketing strategies that can drive long term results and generate customer acquisition.
“According to a study by Bright Edge, organic traffic is responsible for more than 51% of all visitors coming to websites, trumping all other sources such as paid (14%) and social (5%) traffic.” (Is SEO Still Worth It in 2021 and Beyond)
Conclusion
In this day and age, digital marketing is a must. Being able to attract new customers to your website is crucial and being able to convert that impression into a paying customer is key. Emailing previous customers is a great way to increase the lifetime value of them. Some of the best ways in doing so from an online marketing standpoint is with social media, great marketing content, and SEO to create a lasting impression.

I really want to learn more about the online marketing side which I have tried to research more into & come up with this written article.

3yVery interesting, Christian! Thank you for sharing these findings and information. I like that you provided applicable examples of effective ads. I have an entertainment blog and yes, our visitor traffic data correlates with your findings - the higher percentage comes from mobile phones as opposed to desktop (tablets follow desktop). Even though that's kind of disappointing to me, lol, because I spend so much time on pictures and accompanying music which can just be lost on a small cell phone screen (in my opinion), but it's just the way it is nowadays. So I found this article very insightful! 👍
