Letter to my mom-new possible final chapter for “killing justice: the taste of knives

When you told me, mom, on our way to my birth mom Adele’s memorial service, that you hoped you were “good enough” to get into heaven, it broke my heart. None of us is good enough. But God doesn’t care if we’re good enough.

God wants you to know that you’re loved. God wants you to know that you bring joy. But most of all, God wants you to love yourself.

God wants you to forgive yourself for not being able to protect your mom, my Grandma Millie, when your dad, my Grandpa Bob, would come home drunk from the bar. You were only a kid, after all.

You couldn’t save your dad from the bottle.

You couldn’t save your mom from your dad’s abuse.

But you did love them dearly. Just like you loved Pops dearly. Just like you’ve loved Shauna and I dearly, your grandkids dearly, and your great grandkids dearly.

You just need to learn to start focusing more of your energy on loving and forgiving yourself.

So quit asking yourself the wrong question.

No, you’re not good enough to get into heaven, and never will be.

None of us is, and none of us ever will be.

Do you love God?

Do you love your neighbor?

But most importantly, do you love, and can you forgive yourself?

If the answer to all three is yes, then you’re already in heaven.
