Logan Enhancement Project awarded ‘Excellent’ IS Rating for Design Phase

The design phase of the Logan Enhancement Project has received an ‘Excellent’ Infrastructure Sustainability rating – a significant and well-earned achievement for the project team. The award was presented by the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA) at a ceremony at the Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre in August.

This marks the second major linear infrastructure project to achieve this rating in Queensland. The first was Gateway Upgrade North, for which SMEC was also designer.

The rating reflects a project that goes ‘beyond business as usual’ in its collaborative and innovative approach to sustainable design. As vital as the LEP is for alleviating traffic congestion, it is also a ground-breaking project for connecting with the community and working together to protect cultural and natural assets while stimulating the region’s economic growth.

Attaining an Excellent rating under the ISCA framework is a noteworthy achievement for the team as it provides independent third-party verification of our sustainability initiatives and processes.” Jared Cooke, SMEC Project Manager

The IS rating scheme presents an industry benchmark for sustainability performance of infrastructure program delivery. Achieving the ‘Excellent’ rating required the LEP team to address a comprehensive framework broken into 15 categories, ranging from management and project government; reducing emissions to the environment and the natural resources required for project delivery; maximising community and heritage benefits; and promoting innovation. Throughout the design process, the team was focused on incorporating criteria for each relevant category into the design delivery.

Given its location within the Flinders/Karawatha Biodiversity Corridor, ecological considerations have been inherent to the LEP. From inception, Transurban actively engaged the community in the project planning process, leading to the establishment of an Environmental Reference Group and resulting in a success story that highlights the benefits of early community and stakeholder engagement.

“The resulting environmental design elements of the Logan Enhancement Project have been some of the most significant contributions to habitat connectivity for a linear infrastructure project in Queensland.”  Jo Davis, SMEC Manager – Environment QLD/NT

The IS rating recognises key sustainability achievements in the LEP design, among them being:

  • Multiple fauna-specific design features, including a land bridge that is complemented by fauna underpasses, and rope bridge crossings that facilitate movement of fauna such as squirrel gliders
  • Innovative pavement design using EME2 asphalt product, and energy-saving LED highway lighting

The next phase for the ISCA rating will be for the As Built category, covering the construction phase of this exciting project.

Well done to all involved in LEP’s success and we look forward to more accolades to come.
