NEVHC Recognizes Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and in this blog, we want to highlight the importance of seeking care, especially for communities of color and those at the margins. It is crucial to recognize that mental health experiences and access to care can vary significantly based on an individual's background, identity, and socioeconomic status.

Marginalized communities, including people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and those from low-income backgrounds, often face unique mental health challenges and barriers to receiving appropriate care. These challenges can stem from a variety of factors, such as discrimination, stigma, cultural differences, and lack of access to mental health resources.

For example, studies have shown that Black Americans are more likely to experience certain mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety, but are less likely to receive treatment compared to their white counterparts. This disparity can be attributed to factors like a lack of cultural competency among mental health providers, mistrust in the healthcare system due to historical mistreatment, and the high costs of mental health services.

Similarly, LGBTQ+ individuals are at a higher risk for mental health issues due to the stress of facing discrimination, rejection, and stigma. They may also encounter challenges finding mental health providers who are knowledgeable about and sensitive to their specific needs.

NEVHC recognizes the importance of promoting mental health awareness and education that is inclusive and culturally sensitive. To address inequities in mental health care, our organization is committed to advocating for policies that improve access to mental health services. Additionally, we strive to challenge the stigma and discrimination surrounding mental health issues through public awareness campaigns and educational initiatives.

A keen awareness of your mental health is essential to your well-being. Here are some good reasons why everyone should consider seeking mental health support:

  1. You are not alone: Mental health issues are common, and many people face similar challenges. Seeking help is a good first step towards improving one's well-being.
  2. Your mental health matters: Mental well-being is just as important as physical health and seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness.
  3. Seeking help can improve various aspects of your life: Addressing mental health concerns can lead to better relationships, increased productivity, improved physical health, and a higher overall quality of life.
  4. Various forms of support are available: There are different types of mental health support, such as individual therapy, group therapy, support groups, or community programs. Partnering with one of our behavioral health professionals to determine which form of support might be right for you is a good first step toward improving your mental well-being.
  5. If you need immediate assistance: If you find yourself needing to speak to someone now, dial 988, and speak with a trained crisis worker at a local center who can provide assistance and resources in real-time. You are not alone.

Mental Health Awareness Month is a time to center on what it means to ensure that quality, culturally responsive mental healthcare is available to all communities, especially those historically underserved or faced barriers to treatment. Through prioritizing mental health awareness through a DEI lens, we move closer to mental health equity and a time when everyone can thrive.
