New influence in luxury fashion

Next up in our series on luxury, is a note on the changing nature of luxury fashion.

High in the ranks of Gen Z’s fashion influencers is Evita Nu - the indonesian teen fashion blogger.  She says, “I know it’s cool and everything, but what’s cool about being like everyone else’? ‘The rule is no rules!”.  She wears ‘eclectic androgyny’ because she loves ‘wearing boys stuff’. (1)

Influencers like Nu represent a profound shift. The idea that luxury is a fixed look or a thing, which we should seek to obtain, is rapidly becoming out of date.

Gen Z believes in uniqueness and avoiding ‘labels’, more than any other generation. For them, gender and sexual fluidity is the norm. Their generation faces an uncertain future. Self- expression has taken on a powerful new form, as they were born with the digital tools in their hands.

Another example of this movement is last year’s ASOS campaign -  exploring the role of beauty in self expression, challenging their presenters to find their drag alter ego or create a full body look in nothing but glitter. (2)

These realities redefine what luxury means. As Demna Gvasalia (current creative director of Balenciaga) explained recently, young shoppers are now prioritizing uniqueness over the traditional markers of high-end craftsmanship. (3)

This trend will have implications for the whole luxury sector, which has traditionally focused on cultivating a certain heavily-crafted image as aspiration. Brands will need to enable consumers to express their individuality - while at the same time supporting the identity of their own brands. This will be a tough balance to strike.

At Kitchen8 we are often working with brands in interpreting social change, whether that be #metoo, the ageing of the population, or the increasingly multipolar nature of global cultural influence and leadership. Responding to such macro-level change increasingly affects every sector, and not just the mass market.
