How NYPD Drones Are Keeping Waterways Safe This Summer...

As New York City gears up for a bustling summer season, its beaches and waterways are attracting large crowds, heightening the need for effective safety measures. In response, the city's emergency services are turning to cutting-edge technology to enhance water safety and rescue operations efficiency. Drones, initially deployed on NYC's shores for shark surveillance after an unusual attack, are now becoming critical tools for lifesaving missions.

A notable example of this innovative approach occurred at Brooklyn's Mill Basin on Monday when a kayaker fell overboard and was unable to get back into his boat due to strong currents. Drones were able to spot the distressed kayaker before two NYPD Air and Sea Rescue divers responded to the scene and airlifted the 37-year-old to Floyd Bennett Field for medical attention; however, the person refused, according to police.

This follows another successful rescue at Rockaway Beach in Queens last weekend, where five swimmers found themselves stranded on a jetty. In a collaborative rescue effort by the NYPD and FDNY, drones provided essential visual assistance and real-time footage, guiding lifeguards to the swimmers for a quick and safe rescue. Kevin O'Malley, an FDNY firefighter, pointed out the persistent danger of rip currents at Beach 91st Street, which contributed to the incident. The drones not only facilitated a rapid response but also highlighted the areas where swimmers were most at risk.

The NYPD and FDNY's use of drone technology underscores New York's commitment to safety and innovation. By leveraging these aerial assets, the city is not only protecting its residents and visitors but is also pioneering a model that could inspire other municipalities. Looking forward, it's clear this technology will play a pivotal role in the city's strategic safety planning.
