Racism and Reading

Racism and Reading

As a society, we need to recognize that childhood trauma can come in many forms, including experiences of racism and discrimination; in school and out of school. Sadly, for many children of color, experiencing racism is a common reality, and it can have a profound impact on their mental health and well-being. As schools explore belonging and seek to reach a north-star tied to literate learners, do not discount the implications the trauma of discrimination has on our students brains and learning to read.

Studies have shown that experiences of racism and discrimination can result in symptoms of trauma, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These symptoms can manifest in a variety of ways, including difficulty concentrating, trouble sleeping, challenges in regulating-self and changes in behavior.

In the school setting, it's important that we acknowledge the impact that racism and discrimination can have on students, and work to provide them with the support and resources they need to thrive. This could include providing a safe and inclusive learning environment, offering mental health services and counseling, and implementing anti-racist curricula and policies that promote equity and inclusion. How many of us are hearing or noticing an uptick in racial slurs and discriminatory practices against students in school? What is my commitment, your commitment, our commitment to interrupting and providing safe spaces?

By addressing the trauma that arises from experiences of racism and discrimination, we can help to create a more just and equitable society for all and I argue with that improve students learning outcomes- improve literacy . Let's work together to ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed, free from the burden of trauma and discrimination.
