Remembering A Much Loved Colleague

Working for Nottingham Hospitals Charity, my colleagues and I are constantly touched by the generosity of people who choose to donate or raise money for Nottingham’s hospitals in memory of loved ones. It could be donations given at funerals in lieu of flowers; brave individuals taking on personal challenges like skydives and marathons to raise money to honour the memory of friends and family; or Tribute Funds set up to celebrate and remember loved ones, and to raise funds for charity in their name…when people are at their lowest, involvement with charity can sometimes offer a gentle step up; helping to bring something good out of the very worst situation.

In Memory fundraising is not limited to individuals, either. More and more, we see businesses and organisations whose employees raise funds for Nottingham Hospitals Charity in memory of colleagues and friends.

One such colleague and friend was Steve Richards, who worked at Nottingham City Homes for over 27 years. In October 2015, Steve was diagnosed with cancer. He was admitted to Hayward House, the palliative care centre on the grounds of City Hospital, in December 2015 and very sadly passed away in January 2016.

In autumn 2016, the team at Nottingham City Homes made the decision that Hayward House - which had taken such good care of Steve and his family during such a traumatic time - would be their official charity for the following 18 months.

And what an 18 months it has been! We have been overwhelmed by the range and the number of different activities and events that everyone at Nottingham City Homes have been involved in to fundraise in Steve’s memory.

There have been wine tastings, darts and pool competitions, awards evenings, a sponsored Dry January, swear tins, Christmas hampers, breakfast clubs, tombolas, quiz nights, Tough Mudders, a sponsored 27 mile walk, half marathons, a Ben Nevis climb, shaved heads, leg waxings, runs, cycles and cake sales. They have involved business contacts and suppliers, and everyone from apprentices to directors have got stuck in. It has been a phenomenal team effort, in memory of a much-loved member of their team.

And they have raised a phenomenal amount - £15,530, which I had the honour of accepting last week. It was so lovely to see how much this meant to so many people, and it was a pleasure to tell them about how this huge amount of money will help those who need it, when they need it most.

Facing a life-limiting illness can be an overwhelming experience for patients and their loved ones. Hayward House is a unique environment which offers patients a home-from-home, to help cope with advanced, progressive and terminal illness, or to support patients at the end of their life.

The money that Nottingham Hospitals Charity raises for Hayward House (we need to raise more than £300k every year) helps to enrich and improve the quality of life for patients and their families during the most challenging times. As I said to the team at Nottingham City Homes, the £15,530 that they raised could fund:

  • 800 hours of counselling, giving patients and families vital support in dealing with life-limiting illness and bereavement
  • 350 massages for patients receiving end of life care, helping to improve their quality of life and wellbeing
  • 200 days of arts & crafts activities for 24 day care patients at Hayward House
  • 40 of the regular events, activities and celebrations that are held for Hayward House patients throughout the year, including Wimbledon Week, Valentine’s Day, Memorabilia Week, Christmas parties and boat trips
  • A specialist palliative care nurse for nearly six months, helping to provide nursing care over and above that which is found on a normal ward.

What an awesome tribute to their friend Steve! Thank you so much to everyone at Nottingham City Homes - it has been a real pleasure working with you.
