Shoreham Port: Collaborating to drive the blue green economy

Beyond Blue Accelerator Partner Series

A key mission for pH3 Capital Ventures’  Beyond Blue Accelerator is to expand the innovation ecosystem for UK maritime start-ups. It’s through this network that we can truly create an industry-leading environment that helps meet decarbonisation targets and modernise sustainably.

As part of Beyond Blue Accelerator’s Partner Series, we spoke to Shoreham Port’s Chief Executive, Tom Willis, about the work he’s leading in this space.

It’s thrilling to have Shoreham Port as a partner given it is a long-standing EcoPort. In relation to prioritising sustainability at the Port, what have been your key achievements to date and where are you focusing next?

We’re proud of the progress that Shoreham Port has achieved to date. We’ve kept our strategy simple in terms of our approach; introducing heat pumps, progressive electrification of our vehicle fleet and switching to fuels which produce less emissions. Our estate also generates extensive renewable energy from both onshore wind and solar.

We’re also looking ahead to developing our Green Energy Hub. In addition to creating good quality local jobs, attracting investment and improving air quality for everyone locally, it’s a big opportunity to make a significant contribution to decarbonising the whole region through the generation of green hydrogen.

What do you see as the major challenges more generally in developing more sustainable solutions in the ports and the maritime sector?

Firstly, maritime is a very carbon intensive sector that moves heavy things around and is traditionally quite slow-moving, so change isn’t easy. Progressing with innovative ideas can be challenging due to the long lead times of heavy infrastructure and the capital investment required to progress initiatives - ships don’t come cheap! There are so many barriers to entry when you compare it to, say, the tech sector.

Shoreham Port will be the location for face-to-face workshops in this accelerator. Is there potential for startups to co-locate at the Port on a longer-term basis?

Absolutely! The Port is a diverse ecosystem: we have 175 small businesses based across the Port estate, and our tenant spaces are 95% full. Our tenants include micro-businesses with two team members and their laptops, through to well-established medium sized enterprises. Shoreham Port works brilliantly as an incubator where businesses – and people - can grow with us.

We’ve worked hard to create a welcoming environment and offer good access with flexible options. Port Kitchen is our new café serving local produce and is very much the hub of our community here on the estate. It’s a place where people can meet, collaborate, connect and look out across the Port – it epitomises the ecosystem we’re striving to build.

What do you see as the key opportunity for start-ups within the Beyond Blue Accelerator?

I’m biased but the opportunity to work with great people is key. The accelerator really brings together an inspiring group of leaders in the space. Within maritime as a sector, there’s so much opportunity. We are particularly focused on rewilding projects, like kelp reforestation, and how we maintain marine activity while supporting the regeneration of habitats. There’s a huge, essential opportunity to rewild the seas and we see startups playing a key role in this.
