Squadron Energy's big promise, Hywind's heavy maintenance

Squadron Energy's big promise, Hywind's heavy maintenance

In an episode fit for for a new king - specifically, Denmark's King Frederik X, and the country's new queen - the Uptime crew takes a critical look at some big promises surrounding wind and renewables. In Australia, the Brigalow Peaking Power Plant, designed for solar and wind, will initially operate on 35% green hydrogen. Rosemary Barnes has a few thoughts on that. And Australian billionaire  Andrew Forrest has committed his Squadron Energy to provide 14GW of clean energy by 2030. Forrest's announcement comes as Hywind Scotland's floating wind farm is down for "heavy maintenance." The 6MW turbines have been in operation since 2017. We know bearings, drive trains, and gear boxes all take a beating in open waters. Speaking of open waters, part of a Vestas V112 blade has gone missing off the East Yorkshire coast. As OSW is in some relatively choppy waters, why is Rutgers University planning to build an offshore testing facility off the coast of New Jersey - and why now?

After an environmental veto halted plans for the Port of Hastings to provide support for offshore wind construction in Australia, project leaders admit they don't have a Plan B. Still, they say Star of the South remains on track. With China likely to supply much of that wind development, and as Germany has approved two major grid connection projects, Philip Totaro and Joel Saxum note that energy infrastructure might be one of the year's favorite investment opportunities. It's another big week in wind -  tune in for these features and more news and insights in the wind and renewables industry!
