Thailand: Ruling coalition agrees to nominate Paetongtarn for new PM

  • All coalition parties will vote for her on Friday
  • Paetongtarn set to be the youngest PM in Thailand's history
  • Digital wallet handout scheme to be reviewed after PM vote, she says

The ruling coalition has agreed to nominate Paetongtarn Shinawatra for Thailand's new prime minister, the Bangkok Post and news agencies reported. The Constitutional Court found on Wednesday that PM Srettha Thavisin breached ethics with a controversial cabinet appointment, and dismissed the PM from his post. The House of Representatives will vote on a new PM on Friday.

The successful candidate must be supported by more than half of the current 493 members of the House of Representatives. The current ruling coalition includes 11 parties and has 314 MPs in the lower house. All coalition parties supported the nomination of Paetongtarn and will vote for her on Friday, Sorawong Thienthong, secretary-general of the ruling Pheu Thai Party, said. The executive board of Pheu Thai chose Paetongtarn as the party's candidate on Thursday afternoon.

Paetongtarn is the leader of Pheu Thai currently. She is the youngest daughter of former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, whereas Pheu Thai is the third incarnation of a political party founded by Thaksin. The 37-year-old Paetongtarn is set to be the youngest PM in Thailand's history. She holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Chulalongkorn University, and a master's degree in international hotel management from the University of Surrey.

After her selection, she said she is ready to work for Thailand to move it forward. She also promised to review the THB 500bn digital wallet handout scheme after the PM vote. The scheme is a flagship policy of Pheu Thai.
