🇩🇪 The tipping point of the German energy transition is approaching - the regional hydrogen economy is part of the solution
🔔 Recently, the large energy suppliers like #EON are sounding the alarm: the power grids are full, can no longer accommodate the many new #PV and #wind electricity, and the regulated and therefore lost renewable electricity quantities are increasing.
💶💶💶 McKinsey estimates the need for investments in electricity grid expansion to be up to 410 billion euros by 2035. With such high investments, network fees would rise from today's 9 cents/kWh to up to 23 cents/kWh.
McKinsey & Company suggests reducing the expansion of #PV systems in order to reduce the costs of grid expansion. This would weaken the currently cheapest renewable energy source (#PV).
❓What is the solution:
❗️#regional #grid-serving #electrolysis power plants at every large #PV and #wind power plant in addition to #grid expansion:
✅ #Grid-serving #electrolysers are placed between the renewable #PV and/or #wind power generation system and the grid and help to balance out fluctuations;
➡️ McKinsey & Company suggests that green hydrogen is not produced in regional #electrolyzers, but abroad in favorable wind and solar locations and imported using #pipelines; However, the focus on the #import of #green #hydrogen (#GH2) from abroad overlooks the potential of #network-serving #regional #electrolysers:
📌 #grid-serving #electrolyzers produce valuable green hydrogen (#GH2) from excess #PV and #wind electricity, especially when it is not needed on the grid
📌 #network-serving #electrolyzers also earn money through control functions and intelligent operational management

📌 #network-serving #electrolysers will be more economical in the future because they will make the green waste heat (#GHeat) from electrolysis usable in #local heating networks
📌 #network #electrolyzers also produce green oxygen (#GO2), which will increase in value in the future
📌 With just €100 billion, 5,000 regional grid-serving #electrolyzers could be built, which convert 270 TWh of PV and wind power into #GH2, #GO2 and #Gheat per year, while refining up to 1,000 TWh of #green power, 4.7 million tons Generate #GH2 and make 20 TWh of #Gheat available, as well as provide 39 million tons of #GO2.
Since #GH2 and #GO2, but also #Gheat, are difficult to transport, #GH2 from a distance in pipelines is not necessarily cheaper than the regional #GH2 from grid-serving #electrolyzers.
🏔We are at the tipping point of the #energy transition - it could change for the better: 100% renewable, sector-coupling, regional, with significant added value in Germany.
🪄The magic word of the future is “#network-serving #regional #electrolysis”
Green hydrogen #GH2 will become available and affordable as a #fuel, #energy source and #waste heat storage.
