Vietnam Coffee Day
I’m on the way back from Vietnam, where I attended the first edition of Vietnam Coffee Day, which is celebrated on 10 December. The event was yet another demonstration of the impressive rise of Vietnam on the world coffee scene. Starting from a very low level, Vietnam has become the world’s second largest producer and exporter in just 30 years.
The celebration was held in the beautiful city of Da Lat, in the Central Highlands, where I was keynote speaker in a seminar organized by Vicofa, the Vietnam Coffee-Cocoa Association. I also took the opportunity to meet with high-ranking officials, including Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong and Vicofa Chairman Luong Van Tu.
Participants in the seminar and Coffee Day celebration were also taken on a field trip, during which we saw coffee farms and processing plants. The coffee world has much to learn from Vietnam, which achieves average yields of more two metric tons per hectare, the highest in the world. During our visit, we saw small farms that have yields of more than six tons, a striking accomplishment.
The harvest has started and some coffee is already drying...
...but most is still ripening on the trees.
Also impressive has been the rise of consumption in Vietnam’s domestic market. Since my last visit seven years ago, coffee shops have proliferated, as can be seen by tis image of a coffee shop in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon).
My thanks to Vicofa for the invitation and to the Vietnamese people for their warm hospitality
