This weeks teams failed massively. More to Events than meets the eye.
I have worked in tourism and events over the past 16 years and it still amazes me to this day when people do not understand that organizing an event is an art form and or a skill set all of its own.
It is very true that most people at some point during there lives will have had to organize some kind of event be it social or corporate. It is however important to point out that to run a successful event takes a massive amount of work and skill.
This week on the show we seen both teams fail to grasp that this was a child's birthday party and that the fun factor was massively important. One of the parties when comparing the two was indeed more fun than the other but the two clients where very different and both underpaid the teams.
Communication between you and the client is of up most importance because the client has to not only trust you to deliver the event but feel comfortable with you as an individual. Ie can they say yes or no to you. Do they feel they can decline or adjust things during your planning process. It needs a relationship with free communication at all times. Yes clients are demanding at times but they are paying you to do a job and for your expertise not to mention they are hold all of the cards with the event budget.
Budget management therefore has to be one of the most important elements when planning any type of event. Ie can you now produce what you have sold to the client within budget and make a health profit? Event planning is of course a profit making business but you cannot sell an event to a client for a price which is not believable or value for money. (The client is well aware that you will be making a profit to provide them with this event).
I will repeat that understanding your customers needs and expectations is so valuable to being able to deliver an on point event with a good profit margin and top notch customer service. Remember what you like or might think is important may not be true of your clients.
Planning is an art form and people from all walks of life will indeed bring important skills with them to the table for planning an event. However a true professional Event planner has a multitude of these skills and should be trusted to adapt these skills to suit any number of different clients request.
I say value the planners skills and knowledge and pay them for there time and skill and do not forget the creativity and skills they have when thinking about deciding weather to employ an events company or professional to help you manage your annual events etc.
If you need help or advice about business events planning I am available for events consultancy work or as an ad hoc Event Manager
