What does it take to produce electric vehicle batteries?

Lithium — whose availability has been long perceived to be a constraint on EV adoption and market growth — continues to be mined heavily.  Companies such as Ganfeng Lithium, Albermarle, Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile (SQM) have seen revenues increase alongside the growing market share of EVs.

Looking ahead, it seems it won’t be quite as simple as controlling the supply of lithium, cobalt, nickel, and graphite anymore. Battery technology is continuing to evolve fast:

  • Tesla is equipping its Model 3 with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries — which are cobalt-free and less expensive; Ford and Volkswagen are following suit.
  • Market leader CATL aims to start producing lithium-free sodium-ion batteries in China this year.2 Sodium is abundant and just 2%-3% of the price of lithium.
  • Lithium-, cobalt- and nickel-free solid-state batteries are now an area of active industrial research which may further shift the focus for future mobility value-chain as well as for mining stocks.

The MSCI Future Mobility Index aims to represent the performance of a set of companies that are associated with the development of new products and services focused on energy storage technologies, autonomous vehicles, shared mobility and new transportation methods.  Learn more #ThematicInvesting #Futuremobility
