Are Your Employees Leaving for Greener Pastures?
As a new year gets underway, many leaders are forced to reevaluate management practices and take an honest look at retention. Employee retention continues to be at the center of leadership conversations, as it has such a significant impact on an organization’s bottom line. It goes without saying that retention is heavily connected to job-satisfaction levels, with research continually supporting this idea. In fact, a recent study by the Society For Human Resource Management (SHRM) cited that 67 percent of employees rank respectful treatment as a “very important” factor contributing to job satisfaction. In addition, the study found only 31 percent of the workers SHRM surveyed were “very satisfied” with the level of respect their organization showed employees. With statistics like these, it’s no surprise employee retention remains at the forefront for employers of all sizes.
When employees become unhappy with their jobs, they typically begin the process of searching for work elsewhere, some more aggressively than others. Employees, of course, have various reasons for being dissatisfied with their roles; however, many simply feel undervalued and underutilized. Low morale or lack of respect among your team is likely to blame when employees feel the need to leave. Therefore, it’s your responsibility to promote honor and respect, and treat employees the way you would like to be treated. This also means exposing people to your corporate values and making sure leadership decisions align with your mission. Setting the precedent of respect, even when making the simplest decisions, is one of the most influential things you can do to lay a groundwork that keeps your employees engaged and motivated for the long haul.
Remember, your employees can leave your company as quickly as they arrived. Just as employees are replaceable, so are employers. Employees with drive and ambition will be quick to seek work elsewhere, even if it means taking a pay cut for a more positive workplace experience. Every person wants to be treated with dignity and respect – and your leadership style should reflect that.
