Does Slow and Steady Win the Race?

When it comes to hiring new employees and filling vacant positions, many companies feel pressured to conduct the hiring process as quickly as possible. However, the most successful companies take the time to plan strategically so the best hiring strategy is in place on all levels. According to Forbes, “managers should treat the hiring process as the most important strategic planning.” This involves everything from how recruitment and staffing is handled to the facilitation of exit interviews.

Without established hiring practices, you may lose out on top talent and risk hurting the productivity of your organization. What’s most critical to remember is that a highly effective hiring process takes time to implement. Therefore, you should not expect to see instant results without putting in the necessary time and effort to revamp your hiring process.

Figure out what your organization is lacking. For example, are you lacking staffing in a certain department? Where is productivity the highest and lowest? What areas of your organization require the most attention? By asking these types of questions, you can determine where you are lacking talent and what type of workers are needed to improve your organization from the ground up. Taking an honest and analytical look at your operations will enable you to make informed hiring decisions in the future and understand what is working (and what isn’t) in your organization’s current state.

It’s paramount to keep your organization’s core values at the front and center of your hiring decisions. This is critical for many reasons, including culture building, employee retention and ultimately, your bottom line. When you hire with your company’s values in mind, you’ll build the most equipped workforce to carry out your organization’s mission. As you conduct interviews, you’ll want to identify candidates who appear receptive to your company culture and prepared to collaborate with their colleagues another to achieve common goals. Integrating company values in all elements of your hiring will ensure your workforce is ready to meet the needs of your organization and handle challenges as a cohesive team.

You simply can’t win the game of hiring without a strategic plan. As outlined above, you must implement hiring practices rooted in your culture to build a team committed to your organization for the long haul.
