Thinking about scheduling your joint replacement surgery? National PT Month is a great time to highlight the crucial role it plays in helping you regain mobility, strength and function. After a joint replacement, physical therapy (PT) plays a crucial role in helping you regain mobility, strength, and function. PT can: 👉 Improve joint flexibility and range of motion 👉 Speed up recovery and reduce pain 👉 Prevent complications, such as blood clots or stiffness 👉 Help you safely transition back to daily activities According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, most patients who engage in consistent PT see significant improvements in their mobility and quality of life after #jointreplacement surgery. If you're planning your surgery soon, make sure to talk to your surgeon about setting up a PT plan as part of your recovery! #shoulderreplacement #kneereplacement #hipreplacement #anklereplacement #NationalPhysicalTherapyMonth American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS)

Spotlight on PGY-5 Resident, Matthew E. Simhon, MD! Originally from Long Island, Dr. Simhon completed his undergraduate studies at Northeastern University and earned his medical degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He is currently in his fifth year of residency at Columbia Orthopedics and will be staying here for his Spine Fellowship after he graduates next year. When asked why he chose Columbia Orthopedics, he said: "My experience with Columbia Orthopedics first began after spending time in the department conducting research as a medical student. After discovering that Columbia Orthopedics was on the leading edge of orthopedic surgery in the realm of research, I wanted to explore the residency program further by rotating here as a Sub-I. During my rotation, I was able to see just how amazing the residents and faculty were. The residents are extremely close and never fail to lend each other a hand. Another aspect that sets Columbia apart are the considerable resources that enhance resident education. From cutting-edge bioskills equipment to frequent cadaver labs, there are always opportunities for residents to learn applied surgical anatomy and brush up on surgical skills. It also doesn’t hurt that Columbia Orthopedics is located in the greatest city on earth." It is with great honor and respect to the history of Columbia Orthopedics Shoulder and Elbow Service, Dr. Charles Neer and Dr. Louis Bigliani that we hosted the inaugural Australian Shoulder and Elbow traveling fellow, Sumit Raniga and the 2 Japanese Shoulder and Elbow traveling fellows, Drs. Kazuya Inoue and Nobuyasu Ochiai on behalf of American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons. They saw incredible surgery yesterday with Charles Jobin (2 robotically assisted shoulder arthroplasties, distal tibial allograft, and many others), had terrific time to get to know each other over good food and beverage, and presented their ground-breaking research this morning at a department-wide conference. The international exchange of knowledge, friendship, and camaraderie is exactly what Dr. Neer intended and we look forward to welcoming these 3 outstanding shoulder surgeons to the extended Columbia family! What an exciting start to the 2024-2025 Columbia Orthopedics "Dinner with the Chair" series! We were thrilled to kick things off with Dr. Steve Corwin, CEO and President of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. His insights into his journey from Northwestern University through his internal medicine and cardiology fellowship at NYP to becoming CMO and ultimately CEO were truly inspiring. This evening provided our residents, fellows, and visiting medical students with a unique opportunity to learn from one of the nation’s leading healthcare executives. Dr. Corwin’s perspective on the challenges and intricacies of managing one of the largest and most complex healthcare systems in the country was invaluable. We look forward to more enlightening discussions in this series! Devika Mathrani Scott Sigman MD Michael R Redler, MD Ivan Tornos Stephen Bernous Dwight Sipprelle Michael Vitale Christopher Ahmad

It's officially football season! 🏈 Let's talk concussion and common football injuries. "While concussion is certainly an issue, it's really decreased in prevalence in recent years with awareness and prevention strategies," says Dr. Elan Goldwaser, D.O., F.A.O.A.S.M., Sport Medicine Physician. In addition to concussions, common football injuries include ACL and meniscus tears, shoulder injuries, and ankle sprains. Dr. Goldwaser's advice for parents? "Encourage kids to play smart and be students of the sport—learning proper form and tackling techniques from an early age can set kids up for long-term athletic success." For adults, he emphasizes flexibility: "So many injuries can be prevented with a proper stretching routine and implementing something like yoga into a training schedule." Stay safe this season by balancing recovery, hydration, nutrition, and flexibility training!
