CrossBoundary Energy (CBE) is proud to support Rio Tinto’s mining operations in Fort Dauphin, Madagascar, with our innovative solar and battery energy storage hybrid system. In 2021, we agreed to supply the mine with around 30 MW of renewable energy, combining solar PV, wind energy, and a 16.5 MWh battery storage facility. Despite the logistical challenges of operating in a remote location, our dedicated supply chain and project management teams have ensured that the project remains on track. The first phase of our renewable energy facility, now operational for a year, includes 14,640 solar panels generating 8MW and an 8MWh battery storage system. We are excited to announce that the second phase, currently under construction, will expand the solar farm by an additional 6MW, include an 8MWh battery energy storage system, and establish Madagascar’s first wind farm, a 19-turbine facility with a 16MW capacity. Together, we are driving sustainable energy solutions that can have a significant impact on Madagascar and the mining sector. #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #MiningInnovation #SolarPower #WindEnergy

As an essential element of effective digital infrastructure, reliable and affordable power provision is top of mind for telcos in Africa. However, what are the drawbacks of prioritizing capital for power provision rather than allocating it to value-generating assets? We’re delighted that Rik Wuts, our head of Telecom Solutions, will be addressing this theme during the Digital Infrastructure Power Summit, co-located with TowerXchange - a techoraco brand Africa Meetup next week! Rik will be talking about business models, costing structures, and financing options to meet digital infrastructure power requirements. Spoiler: partnering with an energy services company (ESCO) that is focused on providing zero CAPEX, renewable energy-led power solutions could be the answer. Come and talk to us to discuss how we can support your business. #digitalinfrastructure #power #TowerXchange

Why renewable energy for the telecom sector in Africa? Save costs | increase reliability | deploy quickly In Africa, the telecom industry is more than just a means of communication—it's a lifeline that connects communities, drives economic growth, and fosters innovation. Yet, historically, telcos in Africa have relied heavily on diesel power generation, especially in remote areas or where the grid is weak. Does renewable energy provide a viable alternative for this digital infrastructure? We think so. 💸 Renewable energy is cost-efficient: the long-term savings on diesel consumption are significant when using a widely available renewable resource such as solar. These efficiencies are even more pronounced when partnering with a company like CBE that invests in the infrastructure upfront, enabling savings from day 1 of operation. 🔋 Renewable energy is reliable: solar, wind, and other renewable sources provide a more consistent and reliable energy supply, especially in remote areas where grid access is limited or nonexistent. Using a reputable provider with the right performance and uptime guarantees in place will ensure uninterrupted connectivity, which is critical for telecommunications. 💡 Renewable energy fits into the broader innovation picture: renewable energy for telecom infrastructure encourages local innovation, creates jobs, and supports the growth of green technologies. This is particularly important in Africa, where the potential for renewable energy is vast and untapped. 🌱 Renewable energy has a low environmental impact: transitioning from diesel generators to renewable energy reduces carbon emissions and minimizes noise and air pollution, which is critical to investor confidence and community buy-in. We believe that the integration of renewable energy in Africa's telecom sector is not just beneficial—it's transformative. Let's champion the shift towards greener, cleaner, and more reliable power solutions for telecom towers across Africa. 🌍📶 Agree? Come and visit our team Rik Wuts, Ollie Benham and Erin O'Brien at TowerXchange - a techoraco brand next week! #RenewableEnergy #Telecom #Africa #Sustainability

Unlocking energy access in Africa with innovative funding High energy costs and unstable electricity provision are major barriers to business and investment in Africa. To overcome these challenges and support the continent's energy transition, it's crucial to move beyond traditional finance models. In the latest edition of CrossBoundary Quarterly, CBE Senior Marketing and Communications Manager Kate Pallett spoke to Nchimunya Chipo Hamukoma, the Senior Associate for Demand, Jobs and Livelihood at The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP). They discussed how innovative funding approaches, like decoupled financing and risk mitigation instruments, are driving inclusive energy access. In GEAPP's experience, allowing private capital to focus on commercially viable operations and using philanthropic capital for high social impact activities enables the rollout of sustainable energy solutions. Programs like GEAPP's DART initiative in Nigeria are proving that these models can accelerate renewable energy access, making a real difference in emerging markets. Distributed Energy Resources regulation market highlight: Zimbabwe In our second market highlight about developing DER projects across Africa, Senior Policy Manager Henry Carr explores Zimbabwe and its maturity in DER integration. With an energy gap impacting 6.1% of GDP annually, Zimbabwe has embraced DERs to support its heavy industry, mining, and agricultural sectors. The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) has licensed nearly 200MW of on-site DERs, including solutions over 50 MW in size.   However, challenges remain. High wheeling fees and uncertainty around licensing timelines present hurdles for further DER deployment. Zimbabwe's progress toward Stage 2: “directed benefits” of DER regulatory development positions it as a market of significant interest for DER developers. Distributed Energy Resources regulation market highlight: Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)    Our experience in developing DER projects across Africa leads us to strategic insights about different markets. As such, Senior Policy Manager Henry Carr wrote an analysis of the DRC and its maturity in DER integration. Read the full blog here: https://lnkd.in/dnJzzfV2   Key Takeaways: - The DRC needs distributed energy resources to unlock its vast mining and industrial potential - The regulator in DRC, ARE, has made positive strides towards establishing a DER sector - More clarity and simplification of DER regulations are needed According to our white paper framework, the DRC falls into Stage 1: "cautious co-existence" of regulatory maturity While the DRC has a relatively advanced regulatory framework, barriers to deliverability remain. To progress to the next stage and fully unlock DER benefits, the regulator should streamline the licensing process, consolidate licenses, and showcase successful projects to boost investor confidence. Read more about the stages to regulatory maturity in our full white paper on DER Regulatory Building Blocks, where we explore the regulatory treatment of DERs in Africa, categorizing markets by their DER integration levels.    #Energy #RenewableEnergy #DRC #Regulation
