*DIGITAL HEALTH & AI (DHAI) SUMMIT DAYS 2 & 3 IN BOSTON - RECAP* Here are the panels I spoke on and others I learned from last week at Digital Health & AI Innovation Summit (DHAI) Summit: 1. I spoke on an "Upskilling Clinicians with AI" panel with Kalie Dove-Maguire, MD; Chethan Sarabu, MD; Parisa "Risa" Vatanka, PharmD; Xuemei Cai and expertly moderated by Amanda Azadian (American Medical Association). • Why docs fear using AI tools in practice - lack of privacy guarantee, lack of clinical validation, algorithmic vagueness "black box," questions around liability and fears of lawsuits, lack of reimbursement clarity, data bias furthering inequity, erosion of patient trust, hallucinations from generative AI models, error from NLP/predictive models • Upskilling will require institutional guarantees around liability (doc's won't get sued) and reimbursement (docs get properly paid) followed by continuous training and support on implementation of new AI tools. 2. Shyamal Patel (ŌURA) - "Health Data democratization and Future of HC" shared 4 studies where Oura scientists reported results from 20-220k oura ring users worldwide. Studies in sleep, covid vax response, depression severity, and pregnancy were compelling. Most intriguing for me was the finding that by leveraging distal body temperature (DBT) elevation pattterns, oura ring could predict pregnancy 5.5 days after conception (vs 9-12 days using a common pregnancy test). Also insightful was the finding that N. American sleepers had longer weekend sleep extensions while Asian sleepers had less nocturnal sleep with later onset and lower sleep efficiency. 3. Xuemei Cai (Pfizer) - "Measuring Function in Patients with Cancer at Home" outlined results from the soon-to-be published STEPP (Sensors To Evaluate Physical Performance) study which used a wearable watch and a belt-worn lumbar sensor to measure gait speed and activity levels of cancer patients. Measuring mobility impairments through these digital tools allowed researchers to bypass in-person episodic assessments like Four Stair Climb Power and Hand Grip Strength tests. These digital endpoints have the potential to capture free-living functional status in seriously ill patients more accurately than in clinic assessments. 3. Sharon Tamir (Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma America) - "ALS Remote Disease Monitoring Platform" detailed the GoDigital Study and the use of the HANDs mobile app to test fine motor function like letter tracing test, zoom in/out, etc. I was in awe realizing how pharma is deploying sensors enabled in wrist bands, armbands, and smart clothing; mobile apps; computer vision; and remote monitoring in digitizing physical exam measures needed for clinical trials. 4. Michelle Crouthamel DBA (AbbVie) - Modernizing digital outcome measures in autoimmune diseases showcased groundbreaking work developing digital measures in several autoimmune diseases (axial spondylo-arthritis, vitiligo, rheumatoid arthritis).
