We recently hosted an inspiring Plane Talk with Kriya Shortt, President and CEO of Textron eAviation and the current O'Maley College of Business, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Executive-In-Residence. A room full of aviation and business students gained valuable insights into the future of aviation sustainability—a strategic objective for our college. We appreciate Kriya’s commitment to sharing her expertise and motivating the next generation of industry leaders. Special thanks to Aeronautical Science student Lillian Carver for moderating this engaging discussion!

One of the main goals of the Embry-Riddle Daytona Beach College of Aviation XR Lab is to build a custom-tailored application that ensures alignment with curriculum objectives and provides students with targeted learning experiences. A prime example is Airspace Explorer, an innovative pilot training VR application that offers student pilots an immersive experience in a realistic Cessna 172 virtual cockpit with G1000 avionics. Featuring the terrain and 3D visualizations of airspace utilizing Cesium. With authentic navigation training using real NAVAID data, students can practice setting VOR frequencies just like they would in a real aircraft. Covering the entire continental United States, our application prepares pilots for a variety of flying scenarios and can be integrated with a 3D motion platform for an even more immersive experience. All data is sourced from current FAA databases, ensuring accuracy and relevance. This tool is set to improve our student pilot training. The next phase of development will include ADS-B integration and live weather features. #EmbryRiddle #GoERAU #simulator #airplane #Aviation

Dr. Joshua Wadler, an Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University meteorology professor, flew directly into the heart of Hurricane Milton aboard a NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration Hurricane Hunter aircraft, gathering crucial data to enhance storm forecasting. On two flights into the powerful storm, one when it was a Category 4 and another as a Category 5, Wadler and his team deployed drones to measure intense winds reaching 235 mph. These drones, part of a collaboration between NOAA and Embry-Riddle, capture critical data close to the ocean's surface—where crewed planes cannot safely fly. The insights from this research are invaluable for improving hurricane tracking and safety, ultimately helping local leaders make informed decisions ahead of landfall. Paul Stecewycz, instructor of College of Aviation, has long been fascinated by the intricacies of gears, levers and engines. His journey began in childhood, assisting his father with car repairs, working on his bicycle and crafting model airplanes. This early interest in all things mechanical set the course for a remarkable career in aviation maintenance. A defining moment in Stecewycz’s life came in 1974 when he watched the television show Black Sheep Squadron, which dramatized the heroic exploits of World War II fighter ace Pappy Boyington. The real Corsair aircraft flying across the screen ignited a deeper passion within him — a determination to one day work on historic aircraft. Read more 👉 https://lnkd.in/eKGAPBH2
