Converging machine learning and biology to illuminate the programs of life
About us
The Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center was born from the idea that interdisciplinary research between the data and the life sciences stands to transform biology and improve human health. Two recent revolutions inspired the creation of the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center: the exponential growth and widespread adoption of data technologies like machine learning and cloud computing, and the dramatic advances in generating massive amounts of data about living systems through next-generation sequencing, single-cell genomics, and advanced medical imaging. Until now, these fields have largely developed in parallel. The Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center will foster a two-way street between the disciplines. We envision that biomedical problems will fuel foundational advances in machine learning — and that machine learning will drive what kinds of biological data scientists generate. We are deeply invested in ensuring that our commitment to the highest level of ethics and equity is brought to bear through each and every project. To that end, we work with researchers focused on engaging underrepresented groups, anticipating outcomes for vulnerable populations, and developing open-source tools that will maximize benefit to all.

Excited to share that I recently gave a talk on Large Language Models (#LLMs) and biological foundation models at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard! It was an incredible opportunity to dive deep into LLMs and foundation models and discuss their applications in biology. You can watch the talk here: 📹 YouTube: https://lnkd.in/eHcxvjuQ 🌐 Web: https://lnkd.in/etW4Wk6J The talk was part of the Models, Inference & Algorithms (MIA) seminar series at the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center. Following the primer about LLMs and biological foundation models, my advisor David van Dijk presented our labs work on the CINEMA-OT and Cell2Sentence projects. Huge thanks to Pinar Demetci for hosting us!

Crunch Lab is relentless in its mission to solve some of the most complex predictive challenges. After three months of deep work in Causal AI for the ADIA Lab, we’re ready for our next purpose-driven mission. Autoimmune diseases affect 50 million people in the U.S. alone. With Machine Learning algorithms like Computer Vision, multimodal and generative AI, we can fundamentally transform healthcare, save lives, and push humanity forward. At Crunch, we’re taking a bold step. Partnering with the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center and The Klarman Cell Observatory at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, we’re committed to making an impact. This Crunch takes on ambitious goals, with 7,000 brilliant data scientists and over 600 PhDs from the Crunch community working with a groundbreaking dataset: millions of cell images, Xenium spatial transcriptomics (from 10x Genomics), and cell RNA sequencing. Their mission: to predict gene expression and identify markers in precancerous regions, bringing us closer to a future where we can stop these diseases before they start. Three months. 7,000 thinkers (counting) and another chance for collective intelligence to make an impact in the world. If you have experience with data and ML technics join us!
