Equity as a foundation of emergency management is one of the driving principles in our effort to support tribal nations before, during and after disasters. We put those words into action last week during a visit to the St. Regis Mohawk tribal territory, where our Public Assistance team inspected the Water Waste Plant Facility, main highway and local roads, plus numerous culverts washed out throughout the territory in the aftermath of Hurricane Debby.   FEMA's Public Assistance (PA) grant program provides federal disaster grants to eligible State, Local, Tribal, and Territorial governments, as well as certain nonprofit organizations. The grants help fund emergency protective measures.   Learn more about @FEMA’s tribal strategy at: https://lnkd.in/gWfbarAN   #StRegisMohawk #publicassistance #wholecommunity #disastergrants

We were at Columbia University yesterday to co-host a roundtable exploring disaster resilience. As climate change impacts the frequency -- and severity -- of natural disasters in New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the need for coordinated, evidence-based approaches to disaster resilience has surged to the forefront of the emergency management community.   Alongside the National Center for Disaster Preparedness, Columbia Climate School, Columbia University, we heard representatives from government and academia talked about climate change and community-based best practices, such as the development of resilience hubs. Among the institutions of higher learning represented were Cornell University, New York University and the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez.   The day provided a unique opportunity to learn, exchange ideas and contribute to the advancement of a more resilient nation.   On a side note: some people even took time to participate in the #GreatShakeOut, the world’s largest earthquake safety drill where you “drop, cover and hold on.”    Thank you, Columbia for inviting us to be part of this important discussion.   #climatechange #resilience #ColumbiaUniversity #ColumbiaClimateSchool
