The Polestar 2 was launched in NZ in 2021 - if you cast your mind back this was “MC” or mid covid. But despite the challenges at the time, it quickly carved itself a niche, one of the first of a new wave of BEVs on the market at a time when fleets in particular were hungry for them and the Labour government were incentivizing electric vehicles with the Clean Car Discount. For those unfamiliar with them Polestar is owned by Chinese automotive company Geely, who also own Volvo. Polestar was initially Volvo’s motorsport and tuning division, but in 2017, it became a separate brand focused on high-performance EVs. Polestar maintains close ties to Volvo and share a minimalist Scandinavian design ethos, when you jump in one you can see the similarities particularly with some componentry. I hadn’t driven the Polestar 2 for a couple of years and I was wondering how it had aged and would compare to more recently released competitors. The quick answer – those Scandinavians know how to design something classy that stands the test of time. 🚗The interior is still clean modern and fresh, combing Scandinavian design with high-quality materials 🚗It is a snug cabin particularly if you are a big rig, personally I like it as it adds to the sporty drive performance 🚗The regenerative braking/one pedal driving can be polarising but I love how it aggressive it is and you soon stop having to the use the brake pedal. BONUS that the car remembers the mode you have chosen when it is turned off 🚗Its handling is sharp, the ride is firm due to its "performance fastback" nature and isn’t rapidly quick but great fun to drive and certainly fast enough to get into trouble 🚗The back seats fold flat, which always makes me happy The current Polestar 2 is essentially on run out and like most other EVs has suffering from a drop in demand and an over supply of stock…which means there are deals to be had!
