NRIC recently visited Radiant's headquarters in El Segundo, California to witness a live demonstration of their passive cooldown test. ⚛️ The test integrates components such as the reactor pressure vessel, graphite core and the helium circulator. It is Radiant’s largest subsystem test to date and mirrors the configuration that is planned to be in their experimental reactor test. It's time for another DOME construction update! 🏗️ ⚛️ We're laying piers outside for a utility corridor that will run from the equipment pad to the DOME interior. We also removed a steel plate from the wall to be replaced with reinforced concrete for structural stability. Want to see the future home of experimental reactors for nuclear innovators? NRIC's Virtual Test Bed (VTB) provides a computational environment for modeling and simulation to support advanced reactor development. The VTB hosts a wide variety of example problems based on different reactor designs. Today's highlight: KRUSTY. ⚛️ The Kilopower Reactor Using Stirling Technology (KRUSTY) is a test reactor designed for space exploration missions. Its multiphysics model was created using technical insights published in open literature, crafted to simulate KRUSTY's behavior under cold or warm critical conditions. This involved employing various tools such as Griffin for neutronics, the MOOSE Reactor module for unstructured mesh modeling, BISON for thermo-mechanical analysis and heat transfer, and the MOOSE MultiApp system for integrating multiple physics aspects. This project was developed under the Office of Nuclear Energy, U.S. Department of Energy's Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation Program (NEAMS) Microreactor Application Drivers Work Package. It was a pleasure to visit Ultra Safe Nuclear last week and see the progress they've made on their reactor design!
This week, we had the pleasure of hosting the US DOE National Reactor Innovation Center for the Conceptual Design Review of our Pylon D1 nuclear system! The team reviewed the conceptual design for the Pylon D1 reactor that is being developed for National Reactor Innovation Center's (NRIC) DOME test bed and toured USNC's Pilot Fuel Manufacturing (PFM) facility in Oak Ridge, TN. We are excited and proud to reach this milestone and look forward to continuing this program with NRIC as we develop the Pylon transportable reactor system.

Demonstration of Microreactor Experiments (DOME) Update 📣 We're doing excavation work for the grounding loop that will support the cathodic protection of the DOME structure to prevent corrosion. We also received new switch gear components that will support the electrical supply for the test bed. 🙌 Take the DOME virtual tour ➡️ https://nric.inl.gov/dome/ #nuclear #research #energy #AdvancedNuclear #CleanEnergy
