A team of researchers at Penn State College of Medicine, alongside collaborators from five different institutions, recently created a 3D atlas of developing mice brains using advanced imaging and microscopy techniques. The atlas provides a 360-degree picture of the whole brain as it develops during post-natal stages and serves as an anatomical framework that will help researchers understand brain development and study neurodevelopmental disorders, according to Penn State News. The team of researcher had their findings published on Monday, Oct. 21 in Nature Communications. The atlas will help visualize brain structure, function and how different parts of the brain are connected, according to Yongsoo Kim, associate professor of neural and behavioral sciences at the Penn State College of Medicine and senior author on the paper. Other Penn State team members include Keith Cheng, distinguished professor of pathology, biochemistry and molecular biology and of pharmacology; Fae Kronman, joint degree student in the MD/PhD medical scientist training program; Josephine K. Liwang, doctoral student; Rebecca Betty, research technologist; Dan Vanselow, research project manager; Steffy Manjila, postdoctoral scholar; Jen Minteer, research technologist; Donghui Shin, research technologist; and Rohan Patil, student. ICDS Day MMXXIV: Shaping the Future of Penn State's Digital Research was a success! Mehrdad Mahdavi, the director of the AI Hub, talked about the direction of the AI Hub and answered questions from attendees. #PennState #WeAre
Thank you for joining us at ICDS Day MMXXIV: Shaping the Future of Penn State's Digital Research! HUB Alumni Hall was full of faculty from Penn State University and various higher education institutions, graduate students and industry experts. Attendees had opportunities to network with ICDS standout researchers, learn about seeking funding for projects, ask questions about research experiences and learn about accessible high-performance computing resources. Thirteen researchers presented flash talks on projects on projects they are seeking to start or have already started and are seeking collaboration for. Attendees got the chance to sit down with the researchers, ask questions and work jointly on achievable next steps such as funding and resources needed to complete the project. At night, students gathered to present their work in a poster session. The posters ranged from topics such as the low-latency detection of gravitational waves and using computer vision to predict core temperature in dairy cattle, to leveraging AI for microlearning and tracking the effect of snow cover using a neural network. The student poster session awards first place to Bhavika Jain for their outstanding poster, “Recommendation Tool for Alleviating Depression and Suicidal Tendencies Through Healthier Social Media Use.” This achievement comes with a $500 prize. Second place is awarded to Praneeth Sunkavalli for their exceptional work titled, “Expected Pressing Success (xPS),” which earned them a prize of $250. We can't wait to see you again next year! #PennStateDataSciences #PennStateAI #WeAre Paul Esker Josh Stapleton Christelle Wauthier Keith Cheng Vasant Honavar Soundar Kumara Mahfuza Farooque
