  • The Puyallup School District's Bond Advisory Committee (BAC) continues addressing overcrowding in the district’s schools, focusing on the urgent capacity issues at Rogers and Puyallup High Schools. At the October 10 meeting, Joseph Romero, Puyallup School Board President, thanked committee members for their dedication to improving the future of education and highlighted the importance of ongoing community involvement. Both schools face significant overcrowding, outdated facilities, and infrastructure challenges that must be addressed to accommodate the district's growing student population. The BAC is considering multi-phase expansion and modernization plans for each campus to solve these issues. Rogers High School has 384 students over its built permanent capacity and would see multi-story additions that provide new science labs, Career and Technical Education (CTE) spaces, and upgraded athletic facilities. Meanwhile, Puyallup High School’s urban location presents unique challenges. Plans include constructing a new three-story building to replace outdated structures and creating modern learning spaces. The BAC is committed to gathering community feedback and ensuring thoughtful, financially responsible decisions that prepare the district for future enrollment growth. • Your voice matters. We are collecting valuable feedback on behalf of the Bond Advisory Committee better to understand our school buildings' condition and needs. Question: What specific building needs are required to effectively support key programs, such as Career and Technical Education, Dual Language, or Preschool? Should these programs have their own dedicated buildings, or would it be more beneficial to reconfigure an existing building to accommodate their unique needs better and foster a cohesive school culture? What types of spaces (e.g., specialized classrooms, labs, or early learning centers) would enhance these programs and better serve students? Share your thoughts: https://bit.ly/4ezEc83 We encourage diverse opinions and perspectives, and your feedback is invaluable to the Bond Advisory Committee as they develop recommendations for our schools. The responses collected through this survey will be shared directly with committee members as part of the official survey results. While you're welcome to share your thoughts in the comments, only the survey responses will be included in the Bond Advisory Committee's review. Your input will help the committee prioritize improvements, address critical needs, and ensure our schools provide safe, supportive, and inspiring environments for future generations. #FoundationsForOurFuture #PuyallupSD

  • BEWARE: Did you know devices left plugged in but turned off still use energy? They are ENERGY VAMPIRES! Save energy by going paperless and storing data electronically. By sharing and saving documents electronically, we can collectively reduce the need for paper production, printing, and transportation, which are resource-intensive processes that consume electricity and contribute to environmental pollution. October is Energy Awareness Month. Hunt for these energy vampires at home or school. Discover more conservation tips at https://lnkd.in/g4-XnzFx #foundationsforourfuture

Your input will help the committee prioritize improvements, address critical needs, and ensure our schools provide safe, supportive, and inspiring environments for future generations. Question: Considering the growing needs within our education system, how crucial do you think it is for our community to secure consistent funding for school building improvements? Considering that nine facilities require either update or replacement, what are the potential long-term impacts on students, teachers, and the broader community if this investment isn't prioritized? How might we balance immediate financial concerns with the future benefits of a well-maintained, updated educational infrastructure? • Exciting news for the Puyallup School District! Thanks to Washington State's Clean Buildings Program grants, Aylen Junior High, Glacier View Junior High, and Rogers High School will undergo energy audits to enhance efficiency and sustainability. These audits will help PSD comply with the state's Clean Buildings Performance Standards, focusing on improving lighting, HVAC systems, and overall energy use. These efforts are part of a broader initiative to meet state energy goals, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and create better student learning environments. PSD is proud to lead the way in sustainability, ensuring our schools are efficient, safe, and future-ready! • The Puyallup School District's Bond Advisory Committee (BAC) recently held its second meeting, focusing on addressing the district’s infrastructure needs in Region 1, which includes the Emerald Ridge High School catchment area. Rapid population growth, driven by extensive housing developments like the Sunrise Master Planned Community, has put significant pressure on school capacity. The BAC is tasked with selecting high-priority projects to recommend a bond proposal to the school board and expand educational facilities to accommodate rising student enrollment. Projects under consideration include upgrading Emerald Ridge High School, expanding Glacier View Junior High, and constructing a new elementary school in the Sunrise area. The BAC's work is crucial in shaping the district's future. With a deadline of November 18, 2024, to submit a bond recommendation for a potential election in February 2025, the committee seeks community input through public forums and district communication platforms. Parents, guardians, and residents are encouraged to participate and provide feedback on the bond proposal to ensure the district’s schools can continue to serve the growing student population. • At Sparks Stadium, the latest improvements brighten the stands—literally and figuratively. Welders have been working hard to install new ADA-compliant handrails that will soon be painted to complete the project. While these updates may go unnoticed by some, regular visitors will appreciate the significant enhancements to safety and accessibility. The Puyallup School District’s Capital Projects team has been dedicated to making the stadium a more inclusive and welcoming venue for all. Here is what we have accomplished so far: > Concrete Repairs and Cleaning: The visitor stands were lightly cleaned in preparation for concrete repairs and painting. Concrete repairs were completed only in the home side stands. > Aisle Widening: Aisles in the Visitor stands were widened in the visitor stands to improve traffic flow and accessibility. > ADA Handrail Installation: New ADA-compliant handrails have been installed. Depending on the event schedule and weather, painting will occur in the next few weeks. This important project, funded by a grant secured by the Capital Projects team, ensures that Sparks Stadium is accessible to all visitors. These upgrades demonstrate our commitment to creating an inclusive and enjoyable environment for everyone, regardless of mobility challenges. As we prepare for upcoming events, we are excited to see these improvements' positive impact on our community. • The Bond Advisory Committee (BAC) began its important work last Thursday with its first meeting at the Karshner Museum. This dedicated group, which includes community members, students, school principals, and industry experts, is tasked with providing comprehensive recommendations on a bond scope and financing plan to the superintendent and school board. Their recommendations will play a key role in determining the timing and specifics of a potential bond issue election, tentatively scheduled for February 11, 2025. A bond advisory School Board Study Session is scheduled for November 15, with the School Board taking final action on the recommendation on November 18, 2024. A final recommendation will focus on defining project scopes for various schools, exploring state match funding opportunities, integrating life cycle maintenance considerations, and engaging with the community to ensure all voices are heard. During their initial meeting, the BAC reviewed several bond scenarios to maintain a consistent tax rate. They discussed critical topics such as the feasibility of new construction projects, the impact on the district’s tax rate, and potential state match funding based on building eligibility. The committee's decisions will weigh community needs against fiscal realities, aiming to balance long-term benefits for students with fiscal responsibility. Community involvement is vital, so we encourage you to stay updated and share your feedback through public forums and surveys.
