The #dockworkers #strike is expected to cause significant disruptions for U.S. traders of #recycledmaterials, as approximately 54% of U.S. export volumes are traded through the impacted #ports on the East and Gulf Coasts of the country. Approximately $14billion in high quality recycled materials moved through those ports to feed the global #manufacturing #supplychain and the production of everyday goods and infrastructure we all relied upon in 2023. Analysts have estimated the associated costs of a strike could be as high as $5 billion each day of work stoppage, which is nearly 6% of daily GDP. It is expected that it could take up to 6 days per day of port closure to fully clear the backlog. For example, if the strike lasts 5 days it may take up to 30 days to return to a normal speed of operations. Recycled Materials Association (ReMA) has urged and will continue to pressure the Biden administration to intervene in this labor dispute, which would force a “cooling off” period for negotiators that would effectively end the current strike. We signed a similar letter 2 weeks ago, pressing the administration to facilitate an end to the labor dispute.
