When Alan Young, founder of Armor Concepts, started dealing with constant break-ins at his property renovation sites, he came up with a clever solution—steel door plates, which helped reinforce the doors. That was in 2004. Little did he know, this DIY fix would turn into a full-fledged small business! As Armor Concepts started gaining traction, Young realized the potential of selling in the Amazon store. By tapping into tools and programs like Amazon's Black Business Accelerator, Fulfillment by Amazon, and Amazon Advertising, he was able to scale his security company to a whole new level. "Amazon gives smaller businesses like mine access to a lot of things that will help you sell your products in a better and faster way," Young shared. "I think once you crack the code in terms of the different advertising and marketing tools that are available, you can really scale." Beyond the business, Young partners with Nashville foundations like Ephesus House and Project Return to hire ex-convicts to work in their warehouse. “If we can continue to grow, and continue making a positive impact," he says, "then that’s what I would like to do." Meet Laura Bergman, the reclaim designer and small business owner behind Bottled Up Designs. It all started when Bergman, a longtime bottle and glass collector, looked at a few of the shards on her dining room table and had a lightbulb moment. 💡 "I wonder if I can make jewelry out of this," she thought. In rural Pennsylvania, where Bergman is based, farmers and homesteaders have been collecting old glass for years. Over time, the artist learned how to set her work apart and began to sell at craft fairs. Then by 2014, she thought about expanding to sell online, including in the Amazon store. Soon, she joined the Amazon Handmade community, was badged as a certified small business, and signed up for Fulfillment by Amazon to reduce her backend work. Bergman says reviews helped her get direct feedback from customers. Altogether, she describes her experience with Amazon as "life-changing."
