I received my copy of The Complex World by David C. Krakauer, published by the SFI Press on Friday and quickly read through it over the weekend. I really enjoyed it and found it to be an accessible and very digestible summary of the history of the field of complexity science. I couldn't resist the urge to make a graph of the complexity science concept contribution chronology from the Definitional Pursuits chapter. Here's the rough visualisation I came up with using the Graph functionality in Wolfram Language. I left the dates out, but might revisit it later. We’re delighted to announce the launch of Foundational Papers in Complexity Science Volume 3. This volume describes the maturing of complexity science in the age of democratized computing, culminating in new models and theories—from autopoiesis to synergetics, cellular automata to agent-based models—and their many applications, including ecological resilience, complex materials, the origin of life, and climate dynamics. Included are essential papers by David Sherrington and Scott Kirkpatrick, Robert Axelrod, and Nobel laureates Klaus Hasselmann and Giorgio Parisi. https://lnkd.in/ggYUDyjF

Out now — The Complex World, the newest book from the SFI Press! SFI President David C. Krakauer offers readers a concise and comprehensive overview of complexity science, following its roots from the nineteenth-century science of machines — evolved and engineered — into the twentieth-century science of emergent systems. He describes how complexity science provides the first scientific framework for understanding the purposeful universe by combining insights from evolution, computation, nonlinear dynamics, and statistical physics. We live in a complex world — one that is increasingly connected, evolving, technological, volatile, and potentially poised for catastrophe. And yet we continue to treat the world as if it were simple. Our dominant frameworks are still linear, unchanging, and disconnected, assuming Earth’s resources are infinitely exploitable. Complexity science offers a paradigm-shifting approach. Learn more and purchase: https://lnkd.in/g6AXEJjw

We're delighted to announce the launch of our latest book, Complex-Systems Research in Psychology, by Santa Fe Institute External Professor Han van der Maas. Humans are the ultimate complex systems. In this monograph intended for psychologists and social scientists interested in modeling psychological processes, van der Maas argues that we can only succeed in exploring the psychological system by understanding its complexity. By applying the tools of complexity science to psychology, researchers and practitioners can achieve desperately needed breakthroughs in the social sciences. https://lnkd.in/gQRDP6i4
