inDENSE® system meets the hydraulic challenge of Grand Soissons 💦 The GrandSoissons, territoire à taille humaine wastewater treatment plant in France, serving 90,000 inhabitants, was facing a major hydraulic challenge. The efficiency of the existing plant was compromised by its limited hydraulic capacity, a difficulty aggravated by the insufficient depth of the current clarifiers and the obsolete tertiary treatment, which resulted in frequent overflows and sludge discharges. While many thought that the solution to the treatment plant's challenges would require a complete system overhaul, SUEZ stood out by proposing the integration of our easy-to-install densification solution, the #inDENSE® system. By integrating 8 inDENSE® hydrocyclones, with a total capacity of 80 m3/h, and densifying the sludge, the flow through the clarifiers is increased. This significantly reduces overflows at the head of the plant and eliminates sludge discharges. ➡️ The stability of the plant's performance has been successfully confirmed during the past year of operation to the great satisfaction of the client and the operator. In addition to the increased hydraulic capacity of the system, this solution also offers a high level of operator comfort: ✅ Nozzles only need to be checked / unblocked once every two months. ✅ No excessive nozzle wear ✅ No sludge floating on the surface of the clarifier ✅ No issues with "light" sludge dewatering (filamentous bacteria)

Successfully treating micropollutants in wastewater! European regulations for the treatment of micropollutants, including traces of pharmaceuticals in wastewater, have been tightened. Effective for the removal of organic micropollutants in drinking water, SUEZ has set up tests to evaluate the performance of granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration in wastewater. They were conducted at Les Mureaux treatment plant! The goal? To treat micropollutants while enabling the reuse of municipal wastewater. The results? ➡️ High particle retention (>80%) by the GAC filter and the introduction of nitrifying biological activity, allowing nutrient treatment to be refined. ➡️ A particle retention capacity multiplied by 4 thanks to unclogging sequences that reduce washing frequency and associated water losses. ➡️ High removal of pharmaceuticals (≥80%) by the facility maintained over time, with GAC doses comparable to powdered activated carbon (1.5-2.5 g GAC/gC), but with a regenerable material, ➡️ High PFOA and PFOS removal are achievable at higher GAC doses ➡️ Sustained reductions over time of over 80% for Cd and Pb and over 60% for Cu and Ni, ➡️ 1-log reduction in faecal contamination indicator microbes and antibiotic resistance indicators. Several of our experts have written about the results of this pilot project, in an article published in Science of the Total Environment. Read it in the first comment 👇 📆 To find out more, our team will be at the Journées Informations Eaux in Poitiers from 8 to 10 October!

🌍 Pushing the boundaries of biofiltration for odour control with Azurair® B Up 📢 At the 9th International Conference on Biotechniques for Air Pollution Control and Biorefinery in Spain, and the 10th International Water Association Odours and Air Emissions Conference in Australia, our gas treatment expert Manuel A. Hernández-Shek, presented groundbreaking results from our latest study. Biofiltration has proven to be an effective, cost-efficient and environmentally friendly technology for the removal of volatile odour compounds in wastewater treatment plants. Our study aimed to reduce the necessary surface area for biofilters by applying low contact time, and explores high rate biofiltration as a way to minimise or reduce the use of reagents in odour treatment units. 🔬A pilot-scale biofilter Azurair® B Up was constructed and operated to treat foul air from the headworks of a WWTP located in Cannes, France. The air, containing high concentration of H2S, was treated with contact times ranging from 4 to 10 seconds. The Azurair® B Up was designed to create a pH gradient, which helped improve the efficiency of the gas and liquid exchange. This also promoted more diverse microbial activity, making it more effective at removing odour-causing compounds. 📊 The results have been significant: ➡️ Total removal efficiencies up to 99% for H2S, up to 97% for NH3, and up to 49% for VOCs. ➡️ External odour analysis showed removal efficiencies up to 94%. 💡 Our economic and technical evaluation of the biofilter technology, combined with the results obtained from different configurations, allows us to achieve a complete mastery of the biological process. Biological treatment can be used as a stand-alone solution for odour control or as a pretreatment step, followed by a physico-chemical treatment to achieve the required client guarantee. We know that the water pre-treatment process generates putrid foul air and with this new design of Azurair® B Up we can improve the odour removal using a cost-effective and environmental solution. #WastewaterTreatment #Biofiltration

SUEZ tackling forever chemicals in drinking water 🎯 We were delighted to showcase our expertise at #NORDIWA2024, the leading Nordic conference for water professionals, which brought together experts from across the water sector in Copenhagen this year. Marjorie Gavach had the opportunity to present a research, supported by the CIRSEE – SUEZ's international research centre, on the challenges and methods of dealing with #PFAS in drinking water. ➡️ "Multi-criteria comparison of 3 technologies for the treatment of 42 PFAS in drinking water using a comprehensive experimental approach" Our presentation at NORDIWA explored existing and emerging technologies and methods that can help tackle PFAS contamination and ensure access to safe, clean drinking water. Finding effective ways to remove PFAS is crucial. But what exactly are PFAS? 💡 Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemicals widely used in various industrial applications. Known for their persistence in the environment, PFAS are often referred to as "forever chemicals" because they don't break down easily. This makes them particularly problematic in drinking water, where they pose potential health risks.

💧Creating Cycles for life in India! India has the largest freshwater withdrawal in the world at almost 650 billion m3 per year. Over 2007-2017, groundwater levels declined by 61% with net annual withdrawal surpassing recharge. In urban areas around the world, the fraction of the global population facing water scarcity is projected to increase from one-third in 2016 to nearly one half in 2050, with India being the most severely affected. #Wastewaterreuse can mitigate water scarcity as it allows treated but non-potable water to be used for external purposes such as watering public gardens or agricultural land. SUEZ is actively developing projects in India that illustrate the range of drivers, challenges and process solutions that can be used. At the IWA RMTC/ICWRR* Conference this summer, Flavia Zraick presented 3 case studies demonstrating the successful implementation of #reuse projects. With these 3 projects, SUEZ managed to: 🔹reuse 100% of treated effluent to replenish dried-up lakes as part of the K&C Valley project 🔹improve the quality of the Arabian Sea and produce effluent in compliance with pollution control standards for the Worli Project 🔹supply non-potable water for a thermal power station as part of the Panki project Advanced technologies such as sequencing batch reactors, biomass densification, membrane bioreactors, and reverse osmosis, have enabled these projects to meet their goals. * International Conference on Wider-Uptake of Water Resource Recovery from Wastewater / IWA Regional Membrane Technology Conference
