Evaluation is critical to successful programming that meets your clients' needs. It can also be a difficult experience for those you interview and survey who have experienced trauma. Wilder Research is presenting a special workshop to share ways to conduct an evaluation that respects your participants' time, knowledge, and resilience. Join us, Nov. 12, from 1-3 PM at Wilder Center in Saint Paul. https://lnkd.in/eBUXPYms

Researcher Michelle Decker Gerrard helped answer this week's "Good Question" on WCCO | CBS News Minnesota, which asked: "Who is experiencing homelessness?" Decker Gerrard is the co-director of the Minnesota Homeless Study, conducted every three years by Wilder Research, with the help of hundreds of volunteers and organizations throughout the state. The latest study was conducted a year ago. The data reveal a stark reality: 7 in 10 people experiencing homelessness are Native American or people of color. "It points to a lack of affordable housing for those communities and barriers for getting into housing," Decker Gerrard said. Data is a powerful tool for nonprofits, but concerns about privacy, security, and ownership can be roadblocks. Our latest blog post by researcher Jacqueline Zhang explores best practices for integrating data justice into one's organization. Here are five strategies for responsible data use: 1. Data Privacy & Security: Uphold robust measures to protect community members' information. 2. Data Quality & Accuracy: Ensure data is accurate and collected with a clear purpose. Be transparent about missing data and avoid assumptions. 3. Community Engagement: Engage the people you’re collecting data from when developing data governance systems, fostering trust and understanding. 4. Accountability & Transparency: Make sure participants understand what data are required, which are optional to disclose, and how the data will be used. 5. Share Back of Results: Disseminate findings responsibly, considering historical context and disaggregated data for precise action. By implementing these strategies, non-profits can leverage data ethically and empower communities.
