Maine Public Community Representation Statement

Revised and adopted by the Maine Public Board of Trustees on October 24, 2024.

Maine Public is committed to representing the voices and aspirations of all Mainers. We want a workforce that respects and celebrates the authentic personalities and distinct abilities of every individual. We seek candidates, volunteers, and interns who add representation to our workplace because it broadens our capacities and expands our horizons.

Maine Public is resolute in offering programming and activities that reflect the communities we serve, while also developing content that addresses the needs of unserved and underserved audiences.

To fulfill our mission, Maine Public is committed to seeking diverse perspectives and creating a culture where all people are valued. We celebrate the diverse geographic, economic, cultural, and political perspectives that help us connect the people of Maine to each other and to the world through the open exchange of information, ideas, and cultural content.

Maine Public is guided by the organization’s core pillars of civic engagement, creativity, highest ethical standards, lifelong learning, and public service.

Specifically, Maine Public fosters community representation and support through:

  • Providing broad programming that reflects the needs, interests, and well-being of the whole community including new arrivals to the state.
  • Participating in community events and informing the public of opportunities to support their community and get engaged in civic life.
  • Ensuring free access to our content across all of Maine through multiple radio signals, four television channels, educational resources, and digital platforms.
  • Providing translated news stories in multiple languages for new Mainers through Maine Public News Connect.
  • Stewarding an internship program designed to attract and develop the next generation of public media professionals.
  • Training all staff on ways to prevent discrimination. The Maine Public Employee Handbook includes policies addressing discrimination, sexual harassment and other illegal harassment, Americans with Disabilities Act compliance, and Equal Employment Opportunity.
  • Providing a robust series of staff development opportunities with the goal of creating a vibrant community within our staff and ensuring greater awareness of the needs and expectations of our community partners.

Maine Public follows guidelines in building an inclusionary and welcoming environment for all our staff, including best practices from our media partners, specifically:
