A template mod for datamined and 3D edited armor modding. Contains 1 armor, 1 pair of mismatched boots, 1 pair of mismatched gloves, 1 headwear and 1 shoulder armor. A modder's resource, but can be enjoyed by players as well.

Sample 3D Edited Equipment Mod

This is my fourth sample equipment mod. If you are using these as modder's resources, check out the first Sample Equipment Mod first.

This mod is sample of what is possible with Baldur's Gate 3 modding. It serves as a template mod and a modder's resource for creating Armor mods with 3D edited assets. It contains 1 armor, 1 pair of mismatched boots, 1 pair of mismatched gloves, 1 headwear and 1 shoulder armor.

Equipment in this Mod

Clarissa's Studded Leather Armor +1: A studded leather armor made from ARM_StuddedLeather_C_Body and ARM_Leather_A_2_Pants. No 3D editing necessary for this armor, as armor and pants are usually different assets. Some races and genders had to use different pants due to unavailability or serious clipping.

Mismatched Gloves 1A: Leather gloves made from ARM_Gloves_Metal_B and ARM_Gloves_Leather_F. Armored glove on the left hand. 3D editing required to delete the left glove from ARM_Gloves_Leather_F and right glove from ARM_Gloves_Metal_B. Sometimes you also need to delete the LODs due to issues.

Mismatched Footwear 1A: Leather boots made from ARM_Footwear_Metal_E and ARM_Footwear_Leather_A. Armored boot on the left leg. 3D editing required to delete the left boot from ARM_Footwear_Leather_A and right boot from ARM_Footwear_Metal_E. Sometimes you also need to delete the LODs due to issues.

Brown Leather Circlet: Leather circlet made from CLT_Headwear_Circlet_Leather_A. No edits or combined assets.

Left Ring Mail Leather Pauldron: Left leather pauldron made from ARM_RingMail_B_Body. All other parts of the armor deleted, and LODs deleted.

Race & Gender Visuals

Clarissa's Studded Leather Armor +1: Visuals for Male and Female Humans, Elves, Tieflings, Githyanki, Strong, Dwarves, Halflings and Gnomes.
Brown Leather Circlet: Visuals for Male and Female Humans, Elves, Tieflings, Githyanki, Strong, Dragonborn, Half-Orc, Dwarves, Halflings and Gnomes.
Mismatched Gloves 1A: Visuals for Male and Female Humans, Elves, Tieflings and Strong.
Mismatched Footwear 1A: Visuals for Male and Female Humans, Elves, Tieflings and Strong.

The 3D edited assets are only available to limited race and gender combinations due to the extra work it takes to include more races and genders. BG3 uses individual assets for each race and body type combination. So, for example, if I wanted to expand the Mismatched Gloves 1A item, which is made from two vanilla 3D model files, to all races and body types, I would need to make additional 16 new edited 3D model files, and I would also need to make 16 new VisualResource entries. Since I limited it to only Masculine and Feminine Humans, Elves, Tieflings and Strong, and Humans, Elves & Tieflings usually use the same assets, I only needed to make 8 3D models and VisualResource entries.

The Left Ring Mail Leather Pauldron is made from only one 3D file, so expanding it would have required only 8 new 3D models and VisualResource entries. In total, if I had made all the 3D edited assets available for all races and body types, I would have needed to make 70 new 3D models and VisualResource entries. Since I limited them only to Masculine and Feminine Humans, Elves, Tieflings and Strong, I only need to make 20 new 3D models and VisualResource entries.

So, in conclusion, making 3D edited assets is very time consuming. Even if the assets exist, if 3D editing is required, there will always be good reasons for modders to limited their custom items to only certain race and gender combinations.

On the other hand, Clarissa's Studded Leather Armor, did not require 3D editing, so it took far less time to make it for all current races and genders.

Tools needed to 3D edit Armor

BG3/DOS2 Collada Exporter for Blender 3.6.

GR2 and DDS file extensions are Case-Sensitive

All GR2 files need to be in upper case, and all DDS files, aside from Sample3DMod_Icons.dds need to be in upper case.
