About this mod

Adds some foods, drinks and other crafts to the cooking station, but also modifies the names of a few plants and other things to give it a more New Vegas-esque, desert feel to the Commonwealth. Mostly about immersion, but also some cool ingestibles and new uses for useless items. Absolutely works for pre and post Next Gen. Adds two new mod reqs.

New Vegas Like But Newer, now v5.1

There are plenty of mods to give you New Vegas foods and drinks. My mod takes that desert trail a little differently with a few new things to craft at the cooking station that reflect the southwest . . . but in the northeast! Some recipes use otherwise useless vanilla items (like folders!). It also modifies two vanilla plant names to bring you that good ol' NW nostalgia.

I will be adding to the mod when I think of things that will maintain my mods' themes. Support for all my mods are primarily on their respective pages.

Flora or Food By Any Other Name Smells

  • Northeastern Coyote Tobacco, which the locals in the Commonwealth refer to also as Hubflower
  • Silt Mesquite, which is also commonly known as Silt Bean
  • Saguaro Dried Fruit, name and effect change of vanilla's moldy food (good changes, good food!)

With the exception of Dried Fruit the plant names are just text changes, no other actions or events or quests or cell replacements. Just walk up to them where they exist in vanilla and see the new name. Fun! IF another mod that also changes something about those two plants loads after this one the name change won't be seen (mostly), so you know. Some mods also add their own Silt Bean or Hubflower variants, which is just fine. People call sandwiches grinders in some places. Weird people, but still people.

Food, Drink and Smokes So Far - in the Dusty Dude menu of the workbench

  • Black Tar coffee***
  • Can of Tobacco Chew (use it yourself OR take to the chem bench to switch to a can grenade; frenzy effect, obviously)
  • Charred Saguaro (made from Saguaro Dried Fruit and NE Coyote Tobacco)
  • Dirty water because some recipes from many mods require it
  • Mojave-blend cigars ('food' item, no smoking animations fyi)
  • New Vegas King style rolled cigarettes ('food' item, no smoking animations fyi)
  • Salt Lick token (for humans, fortifying the body for either half a day or longer*)
  • Sunrise Sarsaparilla (NE version so sunrise, being the east coast after all)
  • Tar Creosote Cigars in a burnt hollowed out book-as-humidor (for extra bling)

Wasteland Survival Modifiers

* As with many other items you eat, drink or use in vanilla, having found a particular Wasteland Survival perk mag will add to the benefit. In my mod's case you need only Wasteland Survival magazine #1; made the most sense based on the magazine's benefit.

These items also fetch a bit better price on the market than your boring old steak or regular cigarettes.

Why This Theme?

If you didn't know already I have other mods that are themed around the desert. Check them out!

For this mod I didn't want just more food and drink with a new label. I wanted something that offered a different take and benefit than regular food so you remember them when you're out scavenging. Take the Salt Lick token for example. Why would you or any scavver want to use a whole Mirelurk egg to make a subway token something you stick in your mouth and suck on for the day? The result is a token with an acidicly-altered egg shell 'salty' coating whose benefits fortify the body. The Salt Lick lasts a long time and provides some good benefits other than just what an egg might provide in the short term. If you are a salty wastelander who read Wasteland Survivor #1 magazine, that Lick will last nearly all day!

Let's continue on that Lick tack here a moment more. One way people helped slack their thirst back in the good ol' days was to suck on a smooth pebble or something similar. It kept the mouth moist and reduced the 'feeling' of thirst so it wouldn't drive you to drink as much water all the time. Also back in the day salt tablets were the way to get some electrolytes in the body whereas drinking salt water would dehydrate you very soon. Weird, right? I brought that forward to Fallout. Suck on that Lick and it will benefit you a good long while. That doesn't mean I hooked into the survival mode hydration mechanic, however. Vanilla survival and your preferred mods can manage that without my help, and do so without causing conflicts.

A Burnt Hollowed Out Book-as-Humidor?

Really? Hell yes, genius or madness its hot in the desert and some things catch fire, ok?

That particular (food) item really impresses people (Charisma bonus) when you pop open your hollowed out burnt book and light up one of the five Mojave-blend cigars smoke-imbued by being stored inside . . .. That shows you know your business, and so vendors may buy and sell with better prices more than just the Charisma bonus might provide. Sadly it's a burnt out book and carrying it around wears it out, so don't hesitate to pick up burnt books wherever you see them! Fun fact: did you know that a typical Mojave-blend cigar weighs a quarter of a pound? Put five of them in this hollowed out book humidor and the entire thing weighs only 0.10 of a pound. Why? I consider weight also how cumbersome a thing is, so a bunch of cigars risking damage by banging around freely compared to being in a container . . .. You get my drift? I did say genius or madness.

That item also sells for a lot more than the individual cigars, so if you need a quick infusion of caps rather than nicotine . ...

Suggested Mods

I put all of my suggested mods into Desert: Modlist. Check it out.

** Radio mods might suddenly stop playing like I have experienced every so often, and there are ways to fix it. One important tip is to remember if you installed any additional mods since you last heard it playing. If so the radio mod may have been moved out of its original load order slot, and that radio mod may need to be in its original slot! If your mod manager can force a mod to stay in its assigned load order, do that. That has kept me from experiencing that problem for a while now.

*** In the days of New Vegas I loved the idea of campfire coffee. Whereas I could easily find the floral ingredients, sadly I rarely found the dang coffee pots! I was one angry but tired desert wanderer for sure. In Fallout 4 the coffee pots and cups where everywhere, but no coffee to brew. I made my own mod for that using Silt Bean, but then I found that Silt Bean was also hard to come by! At least in this case it was growing around the Commonwealth and that made trips into the wilderness worth it. Black Tar coffee is the latest iteration, but only needs dirty water and Silt Mesquite. Fun!
