About this mod

This mod makes the AI favor buying and upgrading recruits into a certain composition of troop types.

Permissions and credits

What it does?

Army Compositions will make lords buy & recruit troops in relation to an ideal army composition. This is essentialy TW's planned feature of 'Party Templates'. Planned Features. Currently these compositions are based on culture. Each Composition is a sum of desired troop types that always amount to 100%. Basicaly works on these premises:
  • Very desired: a troop type that the lord is currently lacking in his/her army;
  • Desired: a troop that can be upgraded into the desired type which the lord currently lacks within the next 3 upgrades;
  • Neutral: a troop that is not particularly desired, but it's type is part of the lord's ideal composition;
  • Undesired: a troop that is not part of the lord's ideal composition.

This means that Lords will buy and upgrade to troop types they are currently lacking in relation to an ideal composition. This is not a guarantee that armies will be composed in a certain way, because there are several other factors at play:
  • Whats recruits are available;
  • Lack of money to buy most desired troop / upgrade;
  • Being in a region of different culture (desired types might not be available / be less available);
  • Some unpredictable factors.

Therefore, the point of the mod is to lead the AI into these compositions, not guarantee them.

Works with other mods / savegames?

Can be added / removed from savegames.

This mod will be integral part of Calraldia Expanded: Kingdoms in it's next update.

Army Compositions will work with any mod that alters vanilla troop trees. Mods that add extra troop trees and cultures will work too, but won't have any special behaviour. Some X mod with X new culture -> default vanilla behaviour. No crashes.

Compositions

Compositions are culture-based and are thought out based on vanilla troop trees. Keep in mind some troop types are harder to come by, such as Heavy Cavalry. As you can see below Vlandia is assigned 30% composition for Heavy Cavalry, which is a pretty high percentage for a not common troop type (noble), so they are bound to take more time to build to this composition.

A composition of 0% means the troop type is undesired. A type being undesired will have a strong negative impact on it being selected.

These are the current compositions:

(icons are from Imperator: Rome forums)

Troop Types

Two-Handed: Any infantry that uses two-handed axes, swords or maces;
Skirmishers: Any infantry that has a javelin stack;*
Light Infantry: Any other melee infantry Tier 3 or less;
Heavy Infantry: Any other melee infantry Tier 4 or more;
Ranged: Any inantry that carries a bow or crossbow;
Horse Archers: Any mounted troop that carries a bow or crossbow;
Mounted Skirmishers: Any mounted troop that carries a javelin stack;
Light Cavalry: Any other cavalry is not noble:
Heavy Cavalry: Any melee cavalry that is a noble troop.

* This was thought out with Calraldia Expanded: Kingdoms in mind. Native has troops carrying javelin stacks that would otherwise be classified as Heavy Infantry.

Possible Features

Some possible features for the mod:
  • Adjustable compositions through XML;
  • Adjustable desire factors through XML;
  • Different variations for each culture. Such as aggressive / defensive compositions;
  • Negative desirability for reallyl foreign troop types;
  • Test / refine more the calculations;
  • Patches for other Overhaul mods.
