Well, that all happened quickly, didn’t it? It was only a fortnight ago that Nintendo was announcing its long-rumoured compilation of 3D Mario games, and now here we are reviewing the ruddy thing already. Some of you will have already made up your mind about Super Mario 3D All-Stars before even opening this page, but there are still a few interesting things to discuss here so let’s-a-go, as the man himself puts it.
Super Mario 3D All-Stars bundles together three of Mario’s most iconic three-dimensional adventures: Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy. All three raised the bar for the platforming genre when they were first released, and all three remain immensely playable today – even if the constant slew of imitators over the years means they don’t feel quite as innovative as they used to.
The games are presented in a fairly bare-bones manner; there’s an extremely brief intro video that you’ll completely miss if you sneeze (like we did the first time), and then you get to choose which of the three games you want to boot. There’s also the option to play the full official soundtrack albums for each game, which is a nice touch – it even lets you turn the screen off so you can pop headphones in and listen to it on the move, like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate does.
That’s pretty much all you get, though; choosing one of the three games boots you straight to its title screen, and from that point on it’s Mario time. Each title has been tweaked to some degree, and while we aren’t talking anything revolutionary like fully-remade character models or anything like that, each tweak is still useful for the most part. It probably makes sense to talk about each game individually, so let’s do that.
As the oldest game in the compilation, Super Mario 64 is probably the one whose upgrade is most impressive. It may have only been upscaled to 720p here, but the fact it originally ran at 240p means you’re getting a nice clean upscale at three times the number of vertical lines. The result is a brilliantly clean-looking version of the game, although this new clarity does expose some of its previously well-hidden tricks; for example, you sometimes see Mario’s head lose a lot of detail as he moves further away from the camera, which would have been disguised on a blurry old CRT telly.
Speaking of detail, it isn’t just the polygonal elements of the game that get a sharper side. Nintendo has taken time to redo all the sprite-based elements, too, and it’s this move that’s probably the most noticeable upgrade. All the text is nice and smooth, the counters for the number of lives and stars you have are sharp, and even stuff like snow falling during the winter stages looks much better.
This is the first time we’ve seen Nintendo go to this much effort with a Nintendo 64 game. Even when it was released on the Wii U Virtual Console, which upped the resolution a little, all the text and other sprites were jaggier than a Piranha Plant’s dentures. Even if you were the sort of dodgy type who played it on an emulator with some ludicrous pixel count, most of the time the sprites would still look rough; now they aren’t, and it really helps complete that HD feel.
It’s also worth noting that, as had been speculated, we can confirm this absolutely is the Shindou edition of Super Mario 64. This was a re-release in Japan that basically took the American version with its extra voice clips, translated it back to Japanese, added Rumble Pak support and removed the “so long, King Bowser line” (and yes, that’s definitely what he said).
It’s essentially the definitive edition of the game, and – while this is something that only the nerdiest of nerds (like us) would care about – the fact that it’s been translated again means this is the first-ever official English language version of the Shindou version, rumble and all. And in case you need further proof, press the ZR button on the title screen with Mario’s face and the background will be replaced with a cool tiled display showing his face loads more times: this trick was only in the Shindou version.
One final thing to note with Mario 64 is that, as with the other games in this package, you can’t reassign the buttons. You can hit the Minus button to bring up a list of controls but these can’t be changed, so if you’re the sort who was hoping to jump with A and attack with B you’re out of luck: it’s B and A to jump, Y and X to attack. For some this will be natural anyway, for others it’ll take a little getting used to, but after a few accidental jumps, you’ll get there (we did).
Moving onto Super Mario Sunshine, it’s a 1080p upscale here, but this time Nintendo has also extended the borders of the game to make it widescreen (it was 4:3 fullscreen before). This gives everything a more epic look and really makes the game feel a lot more modern than it would have if it had big black borders down the side like Mario 64 does. The text and HUD have been given an upgrade too, meaning everything all looks nice and crisp here as well.
The big question around Sunshine’s controls was how Nintendo was going to get around the GameCube’s analogue triggers. The reality is, it never really needed to, since there was never actually any serious analogue shenanigans going on. Before, the more you pushed down the R trigger the more pressure Mario would use to spray water while running, and if you clicked the trigger all the way down he would stop and aim more precisely. Because there are so few situations where you'd want anything but full pressure, all Nintendo’s done is map the running and standing water controls to the R and ZR buttons. Some will mourn the lack of analogue spraying pressure, but it really presented us with no problems during our playthrough.
Perhaps the biggest change, though, is that Nintendo has un-inverted the cameras. In the GameCube version, if you used the C-stick to rotate the camera or used the control stick to aim your water spray you may have struggled because Nintendo had inverted the X and Y axis respectively. This has now been undone, so unless you’re a Sunshine die-hard, the new controls will come a lot more naturally to most people. It does mean, however, that anyone who actually does prefer playing with inverted sticks, especially an inverted Y axis, is now at a disadvantage because there’s no option to change it back to the way it was.
Finally, there’s Super Mario Galaxy, arguably the best of the three games on offer here. Much like Sunshine, Galaxy gets the full 1080p treatment, and even though it was already in widescreen the fact it runs at 60fps (the other two run at 30) means you can immediately notice the step up in quality when you move over to it from one of the other two games.
Galaxy was going to be the trickiest of the three to port over to the Switch because it relied so heavily on the Wii’s pointer controls. With those gone, the Switch has to rely on the internal motion-sensing capabilities of your controller of choice, be that the Pro Controller or the Joy-Cons. Each has their own strengths and weaknesses; using the Joy-Cons feels a bit more natural because it's the approach which is most like using a Wii Remote and Nunchuk; however, while the Pro Controller takes a little longer to get used to, it eventually feels a bit more stable.
Whichever interface you use, the lack of a sensor bar means your cursor does occasionally lose track of where it’s supposed to be pointing, so the R button has been assigned the sole purpose to resetting your cursor and putting it back in the middle of the screen. Hold your controller straight, hit R and you’re good to go again. It does break the immersion a little, but it’s the best that could be done given the circumstances. Incidentally, this does also mean you can’t play the game in docked mode with a third-party controller that doesn’t support motion controls.
There is one other way to move the cursor in Galaxy, and that’s by playing the game in handheld mode and using the touch screen. This is a novel way of doing things and it’s certainly the most accurate, but it’s not very practical at times. When played with motion controls you can sweep the cursor across the screen to collect star bits while still running and jumping around as normal, but when you use the touch screen you have to take your hand off the buttons, making your progress a bit more stop-start.
(Incidentally, bear in mind that that because of this, if you're playing on a Switch Lite and don't have another controller handy, you need to use the touchscreen: there's no option to use motion controls for aiming the cursor in handheld mode without connecting a separate set of Joy-Cons or a Pro Controller.)
One addition that’s certainly more positive, though, is that Nintendo has also taken the action of flicking the Wii Remote and mapped it to the Y button. This means you can perform Mario’s spin attack and trigger Launch Stars by simply pressing the Y button instead of flicking your wrist each time like a maniac. The motion controls are still there too, in case you want a bit of Wiimote nostalgia, but for those who didn’t like gesturing to attack, you can rest easy in the knowledge that you no longer have to.
So that’s all three games; each one looks better than it ever has in an official Nintendo release, and each has received a few tweaks here and there that by and large enhance the experience. It would be remiss of us, though, to ignore the fact that we could have had so much more in this package outside of the games themselves.
We now live in an era where the Sega Ages collection regularly gives you a wide range of options and different versions of each game, sometimes even new versions that fans have never played before. Meanwhile, the likes of Digital Eclipse are regularly churning out fantastic compilations for things like Street Fighter, Samurai Shodown, Mega Man and SNK’s pre-Neo Geo library, all of which are crammed with behind-the-scenes artwork and interviews. Heck, even "video game nasty" Night Trap got the museum treatment with its remarkable special edition.
Outside of the soundtracks, which are admittedly welcome, Super Mario 3D All-Stars gives you none of this. There’s no concept art, no ‘Iwata Asks’-style chat with the developers, no digital manuals... you don’t even get to apply screen filters or choose a border for Mario 64, which is pretty much the bare minimum these days when it comes to retro remakes of 4:3 fullscreen games. And, while we can appreciate that keeping Mario 64 and Sunshine locked at 30fps means they're faithful to the originals, it would have been nice to see them boosted to a smoother 60fps, which must surely have been possible for a company as huge as Nintendo. In so many ways, it feels like an opportunity was missed here to truly celebrate these incredible games and update them for a new audience.
That’s the thing, of course: they’re still incredible, even if they aren’t supported with similarly stellar bonus content. If you’ve never played any of these games before, especially Galaxy, you can go ahead and add an extra point to the score below; these are three iconic titles, each special in their own way, and with a total of 482 Stars and Shines to collect across all three games, there’s maybe nearly 100 hours of gameplay in here before everything’s fully completed (especially if you haven’t played them and don’t know how to find each one).
Conclusion
We’ve had an absolute blast playing through these three gems all over again, especially now they look sharper than ever. It’s a shame that the presentation is practically barebones with no bonus content beyond the soundtracks, but there can still be no denying the quality of the games on offer here. This is the Beatles’ Greatest Hits of the video game world, and is an absolute treat whether you’re reliving it in HD or discovering it for the first time.

Wow i never expected this game to receive a 9/10. That's incredible! Can't wait for friday now!
Nice review Chris, looking forward to Friday!
You can't say "all stars" if you leave out those in Galaxy 2, Nintendo!
not deserving of a 9
Just...... wait.... One..... more..... day.....
Looking forward to Friday!
The last time Nintendo "celebrated" Mario's anniversary, they threw a 1MB ROM dump on a 4.7GB disc and called it a day.
Minimalistic or not, this is an infinitely better showing from Nintendo.
Two of the best Mario games of all time... And also Sunshine.
"“so long, King Bowser line” (and yes, that’s definitely what he said)"
no
Disappointed with the lack of Galaxy 2, but welcome the changes to sunshine's controls. That was the only thing holding that game back.
It'll be a good trip down memory lane to play all 3 again.
I wish the review would have mentioned more about performance for each game, other than frame counters. The rest of the info was welcome, but the review felt a little barebones, as well. Maybe it’s because the games on offer are also barebones?
Clearly you guys didn't beat all 3 games for this review, or you would have told us it unlocks Galaxy 2, right?
Right?
I'm just sad because Galaxy 2 is the only mainline Mario I never played. Still pumped to replay these. Maybe it can finally get me away from Hollow Knight.
I understand being exacting in terms of what you look for in a port, and I suppose some new content + Galaxy 2 would have been nice, but “Three of the best Nintendo games ever, in one place” — especially when that place is the most convenient gaming console of all time and when such games enjoy several quality of life / performance bonuses — is a no-brainer 10/10 experience. Honestly, the only reason I could conceive of for giving it a 9/10 would be the inexcusable time-limited nature of even the digital release, as many commenters have noted. This might be even crazier than 7/10 for SM All-Stars.
@shazbot and if you like challenges, Galaxy 2 is the best of them all. I'm sad too.
There's very little consistency in Nintendo Life's reviews. The original Nintendo 64 and Wii versions of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy each got 10/10 by themselves, and yet a collection containing both of them only got a 9/10.
I agree, Galaxy 2 would've given this collection the cherry on top.
But I'm still looking forward to playing Sunshine and Galaxy again.
Expected and welcome. Can't wait to buy this collection.
I’m not over the moon for 3D platformers so I couldn’t personally rate these games as Nintendo’s all time best
Still reckon Galaxy 2 is in there... just sayin’
Nice review. Glad I preordered!
@ALinkttPresent Not to speak for Chris entirely, but he's reviewed this as a package, and the fact that there there are limited bonus features and no sign of Galaxy 2 means it's not a 10/10 product. The games themselves may well be 10/10 experiences, but they only form part of the overall product.
I'm still very disappointed with this collection. Especially if you compare it to the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro Trilogy from Activision. They made three remakes of two classic Playstation series from the ground up with updated character designs, a new graphic engine, and remade music and sold them for half the price. While Nintendo just ported three old Mario games and sells them for the full price.
For me, both Sunshine and Galaxy are 7/10.
Good 3D platformer but pretty difficult to finish the game.
Sad to hear Galaxy motion controls don't work in handheld. No good reason for that. Also, didn't realise Sunshine was only 30fps.
Otherwise, it's all good! Can't wait.
Good review, about what I exdpected. My copy got shipped out this morning and will promptly go into the vault until March!
@Pariz Yeah, I left the US during the Wii lifespan and because it was region-locked no chance to pick it up. Here's hoping for DLC or a different standalone release. I don't plan on pirating it ever.
I agree with the multiple comments above that speculate that Galaxy 2 is there hidden somewhere for a future unlock.
For some dumb and unknown reason, it's the only primary Mario game I haven't played. I believe it's because I moved on from the Wii right before it was released.
God damint, I love sunshine but hate the default controls. Also would've been extremely nice if it was 60 fps.
Gonna get it anyway.
Only 9/10!? From NintendoLife!? That's unexpected.
Was expecting a 10 based on your other reviews.
@dkxcalibur After datamines there's 0% chance unfortunatly.
@RareFan Activision acts where Nintendon't
(That said, I am a fan of preserving the original visuals, though the best option is the Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap approach of letting you instantly jump between both; probably would require too much power given that these are not Master System games, though.)
@dkxcalibur Sorry to disappoint you, but unless they managed to shrink Galaxy 2 down to a few kilobytes it isn't on there. Nowhere near enough space in the file size.
@RareFan This. Not to mention some of the work-arounds Nintendo used for these games are baffling and not very polished, such as the Sunshine tutorial removing voice clips of Fludd for buttons which are not used, and the lack of analogue pressure in Sunshine. They could also have had multiple versions for SM64 for those who do not want the Shindou version as they enjoy backwards long-jumps. You would expect all three games to be in 60fps as well, but no.
Nintendo really went as bare-bones as possible with this release. Why could they not have done it properly with full-blown remasters? Moot point regardless though I suppose; this will still sell stupidly well despite the problems.
Could have been so much more but the 3 games will still be great to play...
Not long to go now..
@scully1888 thanks for the review!
Quick question though, did you try plugging in the official GameCube adapter and controller? Just wondering if there's any hidden analog trigger features for sunshine when you do that
@Olliemar28 Maybe you all would have been better off ditching the numbering system for reviews back when you reported on another website doing it. It makes perfect sense to review those aspects of a product, but very little since for the product to score lower than another product that is exactly the same but only 1/3 of it. Hence the lack of consistency I mentioned. Those two numbers are both review scores, but one is for a game and one is for a product; they can't be compared because they are inconsistent.
By the sounds of it this will be the easiest 10 I'll ever give a game, 3 of the greatest platformers I've 3ver played with some nice if conservative updates, bring on Friday.
Also how can you have no Galaxy 2 as a negative? We knew it wasn't part of the collection
I was always picking this collection up no matter what.
Galaxy in HD is worth the money by itself for me.
I don't normally like to disagree with reviews, but this is a big fat 10/10 from me. These games are fantastic. Even if you're not a fan of Sunshine (I am, and can't wait to play it again), 64 and Galaxy are two of the best games ever made even by today's standards and being bundled with anything else doesn't detract from their greatness. If the games are in their original form with a bit of polish (sounds like it to me) then I see no reason why this isn't the biggest no-brainer purchase of the year.
It’s barebones, but what else can you expect from Nintendo? Barebones-but-good is practically Nintendo’s modus operandi as of late. It still makes me sad though, I’d love bonus features like the Kirby anniversary game back on the Wii!
Love the subheading for this review
64 most impressive. Can’t wait
Ordered this mainly for Sunshine, as I've never played it before. Same with the original Mario 64, only played 64 DS. Galaxy i've played to death, but it doesn't hurt to give it another whirl!
@shazbot Same! I got a PS3 when Galaxy 2 came out so I never got the chance to play it! Gahhh it's frustrating
a 9/10? Are you crazy? Those are not even ports! Just emulated ROMS ...what a shame Nintendo!!!!!
Review doesn't read like a 9 to me. The lack of control options (beyond the barebones extras, which we already knew about) adds to the laziness of this collection. Mario 64 especially could really benefit from improved controls (and a better camera as well).
I'm really excited to finally get this on Friday. They're all amazing games. Just like the original Allstars, this will end up being one of my most played Switch games. I never tire of playing though these. Each game is like a virtual playground.
4/10 for lack of ‘So long gay Bowser’
Still don't get how All-Stars 2D got 7.
Still, be good to see if Sunshine is as jank as I remember it or if I really did just suck as a kid.
People wouldn't be so harsh to this collection if it didnt had that $60 price tag on it. That said Im so happy to be able to play sunshine again after so many years
@Kimyonaakuma Mario 64 is a few megabytes, sunshine and galaxy take up about 3 gigs each...but from what I’m reading online galaxy 2’s file size is less than 2gb...they couldn’t fit all that on a 16gb card?
@ianl579 Yeah, this collection, much like Dark Souls Remastered, is screaming “missed opportunity.”
Hopefully they patch in a way to invert the controls in sunshine or it’s going to be unplayable for me. I’ve tried playing games that don’t let you invert before and I never get used to it
@TG16_IS_BAE
Lazy port is lazy.
All stars is a cash cow, nothing else.
So no free camera for 64 and they made the sunshine camera worse for the inverted fans... 😔💔
Not being able to invert the controls in Sunshine is really stupid. This should be a standard accessibility option to begin with. Why they removed it is beyond baffling to me.
All of this further confirms to me that Nintendo did the bare minimum to make this a presentable package for $60. They could've done so much more with this...
@the8thark Yep, couldn’t agree more. I bought it but plan on keeping it sealed. Collectors will want to pay a mint for it in a few years.
Good games, terrible remasters. What are you reviewing here, the old games we have all played, or the work put to bring them to Switch...?? This really deserves less score, imo. Mario 64 looks terrible and in 4/3, Sunshine controls are not really accurate yet, Galaxy 2 is missing, and it will disapear in a few months.
A 7 should be fair.
My kids are just as excited as me for this arriving in the next few days.
@ianl579 Yeah, they really, really need to get rid of the numbering system. It's absolutely terrible on this site and has been completely at odds with the wording of reviews for a long time now. I honestly don't know why they still have it.
@Rhaoulos I SHOULDNT HAVE LAUGHED AT THIS AS HARD AS I DID
@carlos82 @JohnnyC That's the question, do you review the games, or do you review this as a remaster/collection? IMO it should be reviewed as the latter. If I want to look up reviews for those three games, I can already do so. I specifically want to know the changes made to them, additional options, etc. And that doesn't sound like a 10/10 to me. The games are brilliant, but this collection is as bare bones as it can be.
@RareFan Yep, it is pretty low effort but I will say Sunshine alone is worth it for most, emulation or not.
Oh, good. I booted up orginal Sunshine last week, and didn't like the inverted FLUDD aiming. I'm glad they changed that for 3d all-stars, but an option to choose would have been better.
Thank you for confirming that you can use motion controls with the pro controller- it's been shockingly hard to find that information online and that was the make-or-break for me on getting this game. Now that I know I can play this without needing joy-cons or clumsy handheld touch controls, I'm pre-ordering!
"Can't remap the buttons or choose inverted controls in Sunshine"
Isn't it possible to remap buttons in the switch menu now? Don't know about the right stick, but I'm pretty sure you can remap the buttons any way you'd like now for everything.
Super Mario Galaxy was a 10/10 game (and 64 not too far off) but their execution of this collection is more like 2/10 so the score for me will likely be somewhere in between.
Great review. I'm not sure which method I'd use to play the All-stars version of Galaxy, but I'm definitely looking forward to revisiting it and Mario 64 (and playing through Sunshine for the first time).
Galaxy 2 as DLC please!
@Octane IGN actually just posted more of an informative article on the technical aspects of it, rather than a review. We all know what the games are like so it's great to have a few summaries out there of how the collection is itself.
@Octane that's a great question, my 10 out of 10 is based purely on the games because ultimately its that's why I'm buying it and at least two of those included are easy 10's. As a collection then yes it would definitely score lower, even comparing it to something like the Castlevania collection its lacking somewhat. Maybe have 2 score for such things, one purely for the games and one as a collection, we do have to consider that many of those buying may not have played it so for them the games would be more important
@rdm22 I think the barebones nature of the collection and lack of controller options are most certainly worth docking a point. The games themselves are 10/10 experiences, but this collection is (arguably) not a 10/10 package.
For those complaining about the review, NintendoLife don't talk technical in most of their reviews. Stuff like frame rates, colour balances, bloom, anti-aliasing sound distortion etc etc. Most Nintendo Life reviews don't talk about any of this.
A shame though as it's an opportunity for improvement in the NL reviews.
@status-204 Well that sucks. So now sunshine is pretty much ruined for me as someone who uses inverted y-axis. ******!
Well the tweaks and upscaled graphics sound better than expected. I haven't double or triple dipped SM64 or Sunshine so don't mind the simple port. Very excited for Galaxy which is new to me. Especially excited that I get to play it without the wiimote. I would have loved to have also played Galaxy 2 but I think it would have unbalanced the collection and there is already a lot of gaming hours on offer.
Pretty irresponsible to give this collection a 9.... This is perhaps one of the laziest ports I have ever seen.
@TG16_IS_BAE They could have, but the file size on the eShop isn't enough space.
I seem to remember they re-released Super Mario All Stars to include Super Mario World. I'm going to therefore wait for the obligatory later inclusion of Galaxy 2 and get the definitive edition
Should probably mention remapping is possible in the Switch options. It's fairly hidden and relatively unknown, but it is an option. With mapping profiles, there isn't really much need for in-game remapping.
I have many versions of Mario 64 through the original, Virtual Console, DS and such, but to be able to play that Rumble Pak version of the game without shelling out for a Japanese copy will be a nerdy treat.
Do I need another purchase of it? Certainly, I love poor excuses like this to play Mario 64 again. XD
You'd tell us if Super Mario Galaxy 2 was a secret unlockable, right Nintendo Life? * sniff *
@ALinkttPresent There's very little consistency between any two review scores anywhere, which is why many game reviews have done away with ratings entirely and opt for a simple "Recommended" stamp and maybe a pros/cons list.
@MrMetroid there really is no need to make changes or additions. Most remasters are done when nostalgia outweighs quality by modern standards. These games hold up extremely well. Galaxy may be a true timeless game.
People who play with inverted axis controls are wrong - CONFIRMED!
I can't believe the option to play inverted hasn't been included for Sunshine, but at least the fact they've normalised the controls is an admission that they were wrong in the first place. I got what I wanted so I'm happy and hope to be playing this tomorrow. Yippppeeeeee!
@carlos82 NLife already has reviews for all three games individually. You can look them up easily.
@Ashunera84 Can you invert the Y axis from the Switch menu? That's going to be my only issue with Sunshine if this isn't possible.
I'm still okay with this. Plenty okay with this. I never played Sunshine and all summer long I was thinking of purchasing a Gamecube copy which, by itself in this present time, sits a little over 60 dollars alone used. 20 dollars each for the games in this collection, emulated or not, is fine for one such as me who can't wait to finally get the chance to play Sunshine on what is becoming my favorite system ever.
@RareFan lol that’s Nintendo. Don’t come out with much all year, and here’s 3 old games straight ported basically. $60 🤣. Am I’m a sucker because I pre ordered lol
I mean, what rating did we expect, a 3?
@NotoriousWhiz don't think so. That's going to stick out (at least initially) for some people.
I was so use to the camera in sunshine, this will feel wierd. The only game in the collection that feels like the definite way to play the game is mario 64
@quigtendo “upscale graphics” 🤣 you’re in for a rude awakening. This a lazy port job
@Mgene15 it's not even a port, it's emulation.
@the8thark And boy is there plenty of room there. It's a pity, 'cos the news aspect of the site is genuinely so enjoyable. It's updated so frequently and hits on some really cool stories. I love the clean layout of the site and all that.
But the reviews are really hit and miss, and I'm generally not a fan of the over the top cringe humor they use almost constantly. We get it, you're wacky 🤣 But feel free to just write a review. It doesn't have to be filled with puns and references that all come across as trying too hard to be subversive.
Reviews are crammed with attempted jokes and then the comment sections are crammed with questions about the game that the reviewer didn't answer in favor of said jokes. It gets so tiring.
Can’t wait to read the comments! There going to be quite interesting this time around
Already pre loaded of course! Great review. I’m being fussy but I had hoped there were different borders for Mario 64 , and also as well galaxy on switch lite, why couldn’t they have used the right stick as the pointer? I feel it will be a bit stop start to touch the screen to collect the bits but hey ho! Roll on Friday! Xxxxx
Never played Sunshine or Galaxy so I'm pumped!
OMG, THEY ACTUALLY DID IT...THEY INVERTED FLUDD CONTROLS!!! Well, they implemented the one thing I wanted more than anything, so I guess I'll have to stick to my word and buy it...but, my birthday is tomorrow, AKA one day before this game comes out, so my roommate is getting it for my birthday, so I guess I'm actually not doing so!
@BooJoh Fair enough and well said. I was coming at it from the review is of the games, but especially with a port (or, rather, emulation), the gameplay experience is really what is being reviewed.
"This is the first time we’ve seen Nintendo go to this much effort with a Nintendo 64 game."
Man, c'mon. Star Fox 64 3D, Ocarina of Time 3D, and Majora's Mask 3D all looked incredibly clean and enjoyed actual QoL updates. And I DEFINITELY don't agree that this is the "best-looking" or "definitive version" of the game when Super Mario 64 DS is a thing. Even being much lower res, it's a much more visually attractive version of the game and enjoys a good deal more content.
@BlackenedHalo @MS7000 @PretendWorking @RareFan
The Crash and Spyro collections are all HD remakes of PS1 games where the three games each shared the same basic engine and controls. These three Mario games are from three different consoles with each having much different controls and game engines. Apples and oranges.
Galaxy 2 would literally have been the "Lost Levels" of this bundle. ^^
Even if I personally didn't much care for it, just as I do not care much for the original Lost Levels, I understand that Galaxy 2 has a great following and got rave reviews.
9/10? A game that is an important collection but doesn't feature a fancy box or anything of that kind? No more gay Bowser? An outrage!!!
Only joking, I'm looking so forward to this collection as all I wanted is to play these lovely classics anywhere like on train or in bed. Just needed to know from this review if the ports were done properly which seems to be the case. Excellent!
Including Galaxy 2 would have pushed this to be an $80 collection. Too high of a price point. Maybe it will be paid DLC?
@Ralizah
Not to mention Animal Gosh-Darnit Crossing!
Something thought to be perhaps a little too Japan specific, prettied up and released world-wide for GameCube in very well localized versions, all stuffed with 10+ full versions of NES classics.
Why can't they just put the option to invert the controls? This will make the game unplayable for me. This is incredibly disappointing. What is so difficult about making that an option? Please patch this in!!
@NintendoKnight apparently it was because a 9 is what it got!
The non-inverted camera controls in Sunshine have me a tad worried. That may well ruin it for me. I just can’t do non-inverted cameras.
@PretendWorking @Mgene15 @Moonlessky @BlackenedHalo @MS7000 @RareFan
It might be priced a little high, but not by much. Nintendo charges $60 for an HD remake of a single GBC Zelda that was probably originally going to be for the 3DS. I think the 3D All Stars is a much better value in comparison.
Hopefully, the exclusion of additional bonus features may be due to the covid, and hopefully will be added as a free update later in order to get the game out to people in time for the 35th anniversary. I'm hoping the same would go for Galaxy 2... but with something as big as that you'd expect it to have been announced during the official reveal, "coming later" kinda thing. We can but live in hope.
What about 64s camera?
@Tandy255
Sega could also manage to recreate different levels from many different Sonic games for Sonic Generations. If they could pull that off, so could Nintendo.
@ALinkttPresent well, I would agree with you, if the 2 games got a 10 in 2020.
He clearly states in the article, "some of the mechanics don't feel as innovative as they once did".
Games age, our perception of quality change as a result of that as well.
Remember that Madden NFL 2004 was critically acclaimed and won GotY once, try playing that now.
a shame about the emulation quality
Honestly the "critiques" here sound rather entitled. Like getting your favorite meal cooked for you and complaining they don't also have your favorite dessert or wine.
Looking forward to buying this. My son's new switch arrives tomorrow so pop in a nice sized SD card and we are good to go. Can't wait.
"“so long, King Bowser line” (and yes, that’s definitely what he said)."
That is definitely NOT what he said, at least according to the voice of Mario, Charles Martinet. What he said was "So long kinga Bowser!"

So the usual full-price, lazy ports from Nintendo? Gotcha.
sheesh some people being salty over a 9.
Hey everyone
Just a quick message explaining my 9. For me, when it comes down to it, the score is decided by a single question: "how much fun did I have with it?"
The reality is that since I got the review code I've been up to the wee hours of every morning obsessing over all three games again, and loving every minute.
Do I wish it had more bonus features? Absolutely: I say that in the review. But the reality is that I've still had an absolute blast playing them again, and I'm not going to give it some sort of 6/10 protest score just because Mario 64 isn't widescreen and Sunshine isn't 60fps.
If these are deal-breakers for you, then that's fine: don't buy it. But the fact remains that these are three of the best platformers ever made and above all else have to be judged on how much fun they are, in my eyes.
Ultimately, it's all about opinions, and the fact that there are just as many people saying it should have been a 10 as there are saying it should have been a 7 shows that this is an impossible game to score in a way that pleases everyone. I can only state how much fun I had playing them, and the answer is "a hell of a lot".
Hope that clarifies things!
Chris
It is what it is, and it is what most of us thought it would be.
I don't think that a package of 3 old games with the minimum of upgrades could ever get more than a score of 8, the extra two points should have to be earned with extra content or bonus features or a budget price, where value for money would score a point. But this is NL I guess, and regardless of negative comments this does not affect the score.
A rumor is that Galaxy 2 is a hidden bonus on the game card. This started because there is a Galaxy 2 sound track included.
Would NL include this information in a review, to make it a fully comprehensive review, or not say anything thinking that would be a spoiler. That surly give the package a score of 10. 🤔
@scully1888 I'm sure people understand that. They probably just wanted something more substantial. We all know they're good games. If all we're going to say in new reviews is "they're still fun" then what's the point in writing all new reviews? You could just link to the previous ones and give a little summary of how little else there is in the package beyond a soundtrack.
From what I've read, even the detractors are still buying it, they're just lamenting what could have been. So I think a 9 feels like overly praising the package, when the 2 of the 3 games have been playable in a variety of ways for so long.
@Tandy255 "It might be priced a little high, but not by much. Nintendo charges $60 for an HD remake of a single GBC Zelda that was probably originally going to be for the 3DS. I think the 3D All Stars is a much better value in comparison."
I agree that the Link's Awakening was overpriced. The difference is at least Nintendo actually tried with that game. Nintendo completely remade the game with modern graphics, redone music, made quality of life changes, added new content (although the quality of that content is questionable, such as the annoying Chamber Dungeon Challenges).
3D All-Stars on the other hand reeks of Cash Grab. They have done the bare-minimum to put the games on the cartridge. They did half a job, and want the full price. It lacks polish, like I said with the smaller details, such as the Fludd tutorial having the voice clips with awkward cuts, rather than redoing the dialogue. When you compare it to full-price games that Nintendo makes such as Smash Bros, or Odyssey, or Breath of the Wild that pays attention to the small details, 3D All-Stars stands as an outlier. Bad enough to make them unplayable? Of course not. Will I still notice though? Yes.
To someone who has never played these games before, the value here is probably enough, but it is infuriating that Nintendo couldn't do this properly.
People have a lot of theories about why mario galaxy 2 wasn't included in this collection but knowing nintendo its probably a stupid reason like they have 3 games and its called 3d allstars lmao
9/10? GASP I expected 10/10!!!
Being too generous with a 9/10.
It's more like a 6 or 7 to me.
Doesn't matter how great these games are. This collection was meant to be something special and a celebration of Mario's franchise.
What we get are ports that had very little improvements and nearly to zero bonus contents.
Bit harsh to put down the fact that Galaxy 2 isn't there as a "con". Surely when reviewing a collection like this you should just focus on the games included and not dock marks for a game you would have liked to have been included.
I can see the reviewers point but we all know Galaxy 2 isn't there. I'm looking for reviews on what is there. Good review besides though. Roll on Friday.
Edit: Interesting to see IGN not reviewing the collection at all since the games are basically the same as what they were originally.
@TG16_IS_BAE agreed, was also expecting some comments on comparing Mario 64 here with the 3DS remake. But, nope, nothing there.
I will buy the collection. But except for the visuals, the best way to play these games (at least in the last two) is still on the original hardware. I think, I will find out soon.
I actually cancelled my preorder on knowing you can’t invert the y-axis in Sunshine. That’s the only one I wanted to play and in 2020 Nintendo still make small dumb decisions that ruin otherwise great games.
Is best day for me Friday. Maybe take off works. Do things with wing hat and cannons. Not sure
A little sad that you can't reverse controls in Sunshine. I hate the camera rotation with the C-button on gamecube. I need it reversed to enjoy the game. It always kept me back.. i wonder why they used that kind of camera for such game.. i must be from other universe.. that's why the control setting doesn't work for me. bahaha
@RadioHedgeFund So agreed and such pitty
Can we please just scrap Reviews scores? Think of all those people who for-reasons-I-don’t-understand really care about the number at the end of the review. You could save them hours of stress and lots of worry lines.
Other reviews are saying Sunshine has performance issues where theres quite a number of characters on screen and these issies werent in the Gamecube version.
It releases on my birthday! Can't wait to play Galaxy on my Switch Lite!
Nice.
But you have All Stars on the snes a 7.
Hold on they didn't even make sunshine 60fps, what a hack of a collection. Wake me up when you can do something dolphin has done for years Nintendo. I own the game so I could legally play it on my PC at better quality.
@ALinkttPresent Different reviewers might give different scores and I'm guessing the lack of features for this collection itself dropped the score.
@hadrian I remember Sunshine always had stuttering issues.
£50 for 3 old games, one of which cost just over 1/10th of that on the virtual console nearly 15 years ago...
@scully1888 You scored it perfectly and fully explained everything in your review. The message was clear as crystal to me. Trying to satisfy the mob for such a deep passionate game release (celebratory collection in this case) is impossible. Even if Nintendo did a lot more of what most of us were hoping/dreaming for the mob will always find something to bring it down.
I for one can't wait to dive into this game. Yes I admit I was hoping for more but for what it is it's still a amazing deal. I never played Sunshine or Galaxy and over the last couple of years I've worked hard to reduce/eliminate the video game graveyard of never used anymore crap/junk. All I got now is my Switch so this is beyond perfect for me to get a chance to experience these classics.
@RareFan I have to agree. I will get these eventually bc I never played them, but it just seems like a lazy cash grab here at this price and minimal effort.
Nintendo doesn’t need to put in any effort. Nintendo fans will pay whatever to replay the same game. Their profit margin must be through the roof.
We all have to admit that although the games are great, these are very lazy ports and a disappointing collection that excludes Super Mario Galaxy 2. Nintendo shouldn't treat their fans like this.
If any, any other developer had done this, everybody would be bashing them.
@Silly_G Technically, last time we got Super Mario Maker for the 30th anniversary, but yeah, this is a lot better than the re-release of the original All-Stars.
an improved camera for Mario 64 and save states are the only two things Im disappointed in being left out
@James696 It isn’t too bad. In dollars, it is ~$45 of VC content. Add in the work needed to get these running on Switch, $60 isn’t that unreasonable.
The Wii U could play Wii games, so they could charge $20 for Wii ROM dumps in the eShop. No extra work was needed.
The omission of Mario Galaxy 2 makes me wonder if it will be a fully fledged Remaster/HD standalone title like the Zelda Wii U releases, which I would be very fine with. Otherwise, it's odd it wasn't included.
Also, I'd call 3D All*Stars an inferior All*Stars package when you compare it to the Super Nintendo Mario All*Stars which did an amazing job of remaking/updating all 4 Mario games for the SNES, that was an amazingly well made package.
Yeah. Just can’t get excited about this release. If M64 had received the same treatment as the Crash Bandicoot collection, then absolutely I would have bought this. It’s a great game worth playing now but it could really do we a more impressive graphical update.
Sunshine is a game I never got into on the GC and I have no desire to revisit it now.
Galaxy is great but I’m not buying a full price release just for that.
God I hope my order comes in amazon don't let me down!
@Pariz They should have merged 1 and 2 together and called it "Super Mario Galaxies" haha.
More than a decade ago. Played all three on the Wii. Then the Wii u and now the switch
@RareFan Different thing entirely. Crash and Spyro between their two trilogies used the same gameplay mechanics, controls and a chunk of the same assets. Much easier to remake all three games of those trilogies for a single package than it would be 64, Sunshine and Galaxy. As while all three are collect-a-thon platformers they used very different controls, gimmicks and graphical styles with very little shared assets. Remakeing just one would be a major task let alone all three.
We have to stop comparing the Crash/Spyro collections to 3D-All Stars as it is a very different task. That and it's a very different thing from remaking three popular classic PSOne games and... well two of the greatest games ever made that changed how games could play and probably one of the best games of it's generation with Sunshine.
Haven't played any of these games for so long and am looking forward to rinsing these over the next few weeks! As long as they're as fun as they were when they came out I'm very excited.
@Honelith Yeah, a lot of people complain that we are "whining" by asking for better graphics but that's exactly what the all stars original was known for. So to leave it out feels like an omission, not just something we want because we're spoiled.
Sunshine and Galaxy 2 were my deal breakers as I haven't played them yet.
I'll hold out for confirmation of Galaxy 2.
Sunshine was gonna be the first game I played.... how long til we get a patch now?
@doctorhino To play devil's advocate for a moment. Mario All-Stars while a fantastic package for it's time was a much easier thing to develop in the early-90s. Game development cost was much lower, it was quicker to develop when they already had three games to work off of as a template (Lost Levels is just Super Mario Bros. remixed to be harder). They could remake those games and release it as a singular package because it was just cost-efficient, easy to develop and would be a massive boom to the SNES to have over the Genisis. Nintendo could do it because it was so cheap to make back in day compared to modern-day development costs and graphical expectations.
This is a different era of development. The cost of remaking from the ground-up two of the best games ever made that changed how games could play and one of the best games of its a generation for a fully matured HD Generation is a lot to ask. All three games play differently, have vastly different art-styles and very rabid fanbases that would question every little change from the original (Twin Snakes comes to mind as still critised today despite playing and looking way better than the original MGS). I could see Nintendo remaking one of them (probably Sunshine or 64), but all three for a single package? That's insane ask considering Nintendo just last gen did not even do that for Zelda. Windwaker HD, Twilight Princess HD and OOT and MM 3D were all released as separate packages sold at $50-60 MSRP.
Not saying it cannot be done, but wanting all three 3D Mario games in this package (+ Galaxy 2 I guess) completely remade for a single $60 collection is a bit greedy on a consumer end. Very few companies would greenlight such a thing from just a development cost standpoint. And no don't use Spyro or Crash as examples of it can be done, because that is a very different ask.
Alternate title:
Nintendo finds porting old games more profitable than developing new titles.
@Wexter Porting three games from similar systems should't cost $60 a copy. We might soon find it is just running an emulator anyway.
@StevenG I agree the cost is a bit high at $60 I think $50 would had been a more fair price. But, at the same time, they are three of the best games ever made (in my opinion) and cost a fair chunk of change on their original hardware. No really try to find Sunshine on Gamecube for under $60 in good condition, I tend to see the price go over $100. Just for Sunshine and when you add in Galaxy and 64? $60 sounds like an okay bargain.
I think I'm going to have to pass on these. Even though the graphics are a bit improved and even though the games are great, I think I would much sooner have a fully remastered version.
"This is the first time we’ve seen Nintendo go to this much effort with a Nintendo 64 game."
It's funny how, not only have they put more effort into Star Fox 64 3D and Ocarina of Time 3D than this ROM of Super Mario 64, they've ALREADY made more effort with this EXACT game in Super Mario 64 DS 🤣🤣 This review might need amendment 😅😅
Although he might just mean compared to like Virtual Console releases, but that goes without saying so I don't think that's what he meant.
@nintendope64 I meant a literal N64 game, not a remake of one. I was referring to the fact that stuff like Wii U Virtual Console N64 games didn't get anywhere near the level of attention or optimisation Mario 64 gets here.
@Wexter Well I think their fault in this is that they are piggy backing off the allstars branding. They already had a previous history of releasing stuff through a virtual console when it was purely emulated. So because they got rid of the VC they can make us buy all 3 games in the same form together for 60 instead of maybe 10 and 20 a piece? I think it is greedy that they use their allstars branding to rope people into what is basically a VC collection with touchscreen controls or motion mandatory for Galaxy. I mention that because the one game I wanted out of the collection most doesn't use the dual sticks switch has to offer.
@scully1888 that's fair.
So Nintendo ruin yet another game by not allowing you to invert the controls. I sold Luigis Mansion 3 for this very reason, I will cancel this pre-order, unacceptable to not be able to customise the inversion. The GameCube version can be patched to run at 16:9 and you can also customise the controls via Gekko codes.
@doctorhino But, are they really piggybacking? There was only ever one All-Star Collection before this one which had already been just re-released on the Wii with like zero effort and sold for $40. That was already kinda insulting and tarnished the "All-Stars" Brand... I have it in my Wii Collection, but I did not buy it when it came out. :/ I say that was a worse use of the All-Star brand than 3D All-Stars is doing which is an HD Remastering of 3 classic Mario games (note the term Remaster in it's normal term used in film and music not how game companies use it). Not saying you're not allowed to have higher expectations just saying what I'm seeing people ask is not as simple as people are claiming. Hence playing Devil's Advocate on this.
Everyone complained that the game is too expensive. But isn't cinema expensive? Aren't sports expensive?
Is $ 60 for more than 100 hours of fun expensive?
Can you read the text on the "L is real" sign in the courtyard in Mario 64?
@Wexter Given it's 1 game, it's a legendary game. Not excusing the Wii offering either, but as I remember it got relatively low review scores and was not super in demand.
I didn't want a full remake, I just wanted them to work on the emulation and controls more. With modern emulation upping the framerate has already been proven on sunshine and mario 64. I don't think that's a ton to ask.
If they remade super mario 64 from the ground up with the best graphics (equal to crash or spyro), full widescreen and new animations all around, including multiplayer or other character options you better believe I would drop 60 on it alone.
No Galaxy 2 as a con? Really? It would have been nice but what would be the point of it when we have the original?
@doctorhino That is far more reasonable and I can see that. WAY fairer than other posts in this thread. I wish Mario 64 could had been in full wide-screen, but maybe Nintendo did not want to do that to preserve some vintage vision they had for the game. Who knows!? Sunshine running in 30fps is a bit disappointing, but it's not a deal breaker either.
But, as far as collections go? This is probably one of the biggest Nintendo has done since probably the Zelda Collection back on the Gamecube (let's not talk about how insane it was to even get that collection back in day). As far as re-releases go this fits snuggly in other HD Collections (think God of War, Ico Collection or Sand of Time trilogy) with far fewer bugs and bizarre changes. I'm glad they tried to preserve the authentic feel vs trying to modernize the package too much. I feel if they tried that like Capcom did with the DMC Collection back in the day I'd be way more disinterested in this collection.
@scully1888 Actually makes it worse.
If your only criteria is how much fun you personally had, then your reviews aren't worth much. I accept there's always some personal enjoyment aspect to reviews, but if you aren't taking in to account value, technical standards, user accessibility options, and effort put in to the product, then what's the point of attaching a score to a review.
Removing points for failings is part of the point.
@EMI Yeah, but they're expensive to watch them live, and in person, first time round, not on DVD 20 years after they're first played.
@Wexter I think the game is fine as a collection, and somewhat fair since they are giving you 3. It's jut not that appealing to me and is sold out everywhere at this point. Teasing the fact that it's limited, then making it underwhelming I think is just not a very consumer friendly stance for them. It would have been far more enjoyable sold piecewise if the collection as a whole didn't have anything to offer on top of the games.
A little museum of the entries has been standard for many collections for a long time now.
I like how a ton of people still think galaxy 2 is hidden in it lol people have literally already data mined it a week ago lol. It might come later but I mean really.
@doctorhino I agree that is the most disappointing part of this collection. Is just had barebones it is. The remasted games look great and apparently play silky smooth! But, the lack of bonuses like art galleries or developer interviews (even old ones lifted out of Nintendo Power) is very disappointing. But, who knows maybe Nintendo did that for future plans for the titles. We'll just have to wait I guess.
Note the comment bellow mine as what I was referring to in my earlier post of what I was seeing and why I played devil's advocate.
The value is poor compared to the asking price, this collection is a ripoff. Capcom justified the Resident Evil 2 remake's original price because they completely remade it, in contrast Nintendo was lazy and greedy and decided to offer emulations with minor enhancements for full price.
I'm curious how Galaxy works with the Pro Controller. Does the cursor simply disappear or do you still have to control it somehow? Does the right analog move it around? I always personally hated the cursor and felt it was distracting, so it'd be cool if using the Pro somehow got rid of it but I doubt that would be the case. Judging by one of the screenshots, it looks like it's controlled via the right analog and you can just fling the cursor away where it's not blocking your view, which is what the person playing in the screenshot appears to have done. If so that's a nice improvement already. I can just move it out of my face for a while instead of having it always there bobbing around like a pest.
"482 Stars and Shines"
Aren't there 120+120+121=361? Luigi's stars in SMG are the same as Mario's.
@NintendoKnight It deserves a 10 instead!
@GrandScribe Actually, the games are not merely emulated. Upping the resolution to HD is more difficult than you think. It isn't "lazy and greedy" as you claim.
@status-204 Mind if you tell you objections to the review process in this website?
Easy money.
Cant blame them for keep selling the same exact game over and over again... especially when people pay $60 for this stuff.
@Richnj I'm sorry, but in my eyes the main criteria will always be how much fun the game is. You say that if I don't take other things into account the review is pointless but I absolutely do take them into account.
If it had been a fuller package with more bonus content it would have been a 10. My personal opinion is that not having the bonus content isn't enough to drop it down to a 6 or 7 or anything like that: the fun factor will always 'weigh' more when stacking all the features up.
@RPGamer sunshine was fixed in every way possible for switch they couldn't have changed anything else and this game is more niche than other titles so you might like you might hate it it is one of my all time favorites so don't let others ruin it for you if it clicks with you. If not that's all right but remember some people this game REALLY clicks so give it a shot.
@NintendoKnight Yes, it should be a 10. I agree,
@Ghostchip How exactly is people stating their opinion "ruining" it for other people? The fact is it had control issues and still does, you can go back and read the original reviews and get the same perspective.
@scully1888 Well now you're just lying to me, because you just said the score was "decided by a single criteria".
Guys, let people have an opinion and freely say it in the comments section, even if they are not praising Nintendo mindlessly and unconditionally. I mean, this is a lazy ports collection running on emulators (which is fine) and without Super Mario Galaxy 2 (which is not). Thank you.
@doctorhino oh I didn't mean that I just think a lot of people are turned off by other saying why sunshine is really bad when I think people should say I think sunshine is bad because the controls are not my favorite and I don't like blue coins (or whatever) that is fine. But a ton of people just say it is objectively terrible when I think it just clicks with certain people. I know it is not the best but I still love it it just feels good to me. A lot of people will go into this thinking sunshine is the plague and play galaxy and 64 when it could click with them too. I also know this might sound like I'm praising nintendo for no reason when I really don't think they did this game right. I think it's good but it had so much potential to be amazing but it became rushed and a less renowned game as a result getting a lot of hate. It is short and blue coins are filler but the shines are so much fun to get for me and I hope others enjoy it too. I feel sunshine 2 would be awesome because the 1st one royally screwed up a great idea. I honestly also think galaxy 2 should have taken its place. I just still love this game as short and rushed as it is and I'm fine with people hating it but what bothers me is people not giving it a chance.
@Wexter
Would have been happy with just M64 being properly updated . Think Sunshine and Galaxy are fine with these minor improvement
@Silly_G
You mean Super Mario Maker for the 30th anniversary?! I thought people liked it!
@dkxcalibur Hiding games inside other games was the kind of fanservice we'd expect from the Iwata era. Unfortunately, the bankers have taken over. Every spare cent gets left on the cutting room floor.
What a difficult game to apply a score to! 10/10 for the games, 2/10 for the package... 9/10 seems fair. Gutted about the lack of inverted controls on Sunshine—hope I can get used to it.
My body is ready. Take me, Mario.
I think the biggest difference between this All Stars collection and the Crash and Spyro remasters is that I actually want to play the Mario games. So that already makes it better.
Thought the review was fine. I give the comments a 7/10. Some great points, but let down by control issues.
@DoktorTotenKopf
Who asked you to bash my opinion ? 🤨
The games look great and it will my nice and convenient to play them on my Switch/Switch lite. My copy has been shipped out today and Friday can't come soon enough😃. I'm debating on downloading the collection just so I can play it ASAP and keep my physical copy sealed. Decisions 🤔🤔🤔
Not sure why people are disappointed that the games are emulated. The games using emulation also means they could easily be patch if need be if glitches are found or if the collection were to ever be optimize for the Switch Pro.
@status-204 Well, I gotta agree there, they're lacking in a lot of ways. They feel like literally anyone could have written them.
Although, I never really go to any site for reviews anymore. They're kind of a lost art. A fun thing to read every now and then back in the day in magazines but there's not much point to them in this day and age.
@Agramonte Same games multiple time but this is the first time they resell Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Sunshine. Would you rather have nothing on Super Mario 35th anniversary?
@Ghostchip I think that Super Mario Sunshine is the best and Super Mario Odyssey the worst 3D Mario games and that Super Mario Galaxy 2 should have been included because the games are running on emulators. Fortunately, many people appreciate Super Mario Sunshine.
@MeWario I agree. I'm disappointed with the lack of button mapping, too.
This is it folks. THIS is the collection we've all been waiting for. The collection to end all collections. Beautiful screen shots. Beautiful controls. Friday might as well be my birthday because ITS.HAPPENING!
@NEStalgia That would have been awesome, as an unlockable.
@NintendoByNature And I knew it was happening if you remember 😁.
@BlueOcean you called it. I bought it. Ready to backflip and shimmy up a tree faster than you know.
@Sszx09 That's fair. But, I feel this package is more designed to be a send-up then a chance to remake games. That and I'm reminded of the Master Cheif Collection which is AWESOMES! WIth remakes of Halo Combat Evolved and Halo 2! But, now Halo 3 sticks out like a sore thumb since it did not get a remake treatment like the first games in the package. I feel if they remade 64, but not Galaxy or Sunshine those games would feel lesser in comparison if you get what I mean? I don't know maybe I'm just not making sense.
@NintendoByNature I bought it too but order hasn't been dispatched. I just can't resist classic Mario.
@BlueOcean someone else loves sunshine I swear all my friends hate it buy I played it a lot tons of fun! I think galaxy tops it in my book though. Heres my top ones 1. Galaxy 2. Sunshine 3. Galaxy 2 4. Oddessy 5. 3d world 6. 64. (I love 64 just hasn't aged as well as the rest)
@Ghostchip That's a good ranking 😁.
@NintendoByNature as much as I want to agree I don't. You might be saying I'm ungrateful but I love this collection it is great! But to end all collections? It's missing one of the best games of all time and that game is higher rated than all three of the games in the pack. All they needed was galaxy 2 then it would be the collection to end all collections hope they add it
I can hardly wait to play this on Friday. The visual updates are easy for me to see, and very welcome. I haven't played SM64 since the DS, Sunshine since release, or Galaxy since release. To me, this'll be a great pack. I'm grabbing it digitally so I can just swap between my Switch and Lite whenever, without bothering for cartridges.
@Ghostchip yea but......sm64!! Its the best mario game of all time! Higher resolution. Better frame rate yes? Its ending the previous collections and stopping any new ones from coming out. Calling it now. ITS. HAPPENING!
@BlueOcean mine still says by Friday but it hasn't shipped yet. I'm getting a tad worried
The un-reversed camera controls means that it is Stick-up and the camera is going up, stick-down and the camera is going down?
I do not want to be stuck with the old awkward controls where I press down and my camera does up. We are not operating a helicopter here!
Did they bother to fix the yoshi typo mistake or the bug smoke effect in mario 64?
@Dog If Capcom had released the original three Resident Evil games with just improved resolutions and and maybe a few extra minor improvements people would've roasted them as greedy and lazy. Nintendo needs to do better!
@Zuljaras I'll just leave this here:

@Tommy-and-Timmy @PikaPhantom : Fine. In terms of legacy/compilation releases, then.
@HobbitGamer I get that. I read a little in the past 3 minutes! And I thought about it. When I play vehicle games and when I fly with Batman in the Arkham series the controls are inverted and it feels right BUT when it comes to camera control it is awful for me. I can't aim or anything!
Inverted for me is only for vehicles and other flying things.
@NintendoKnight they had to do this otherwise no free games from big boss Nintendo for nintendolife. Sucks to be dependent.
@Zuljaras Yeah, i get ya. I played alot of Flight Simulator and Jane's Longbow Gold with my dad, he had sticks since he flew IRL. Used to it since
@NintendoKnight thank you
The camera fixing of Sunshine was the most important thing in the "remaster" for me, even of it is my least favourite 3D mario game. This reads more like a 10 to me to he honest. Galaxy and 64 are two of the greatest of all time.
@NintendoByNature easy to please
@NintendoArchive yes yes. You are happy man too?
@NintendoByNature Am hearing you now happiest to please, yes? I give shiny toes, you happy?
@HobbitGamer yes. This is best way to play collection. Even @nintendoarchive agrees with us. We've been waiting for this moment for so long and we finally have it! Which gaems are you two starting with?!
@HobbitGamer @NintendoByNature - Why you guys experience joy? Hate everything and be miserable like us. And what’s with this score, a nine?!? I thought for sure it’d be an 8.759!!!
@GrandScribe Um yes, because that's 3 PS1 games which are SIGNIFICANTLY more dated than the Mario collection. Galaxy looks almost as good as Odyssey. Ridiculous comparison.
@bimmy-lee you must be trowling. No way you no want this collection. I said it first, this WILL end all collections.
I am very excited and i do have it preordered, but not putting Galaxy 2 on this was just Nintendo being lazy. There was literally no reason not to
@broskiplays it’s made by Nintendo. Of course it would get a 9/10 no matter how lazy.
@NintendoByNature not really. No stick has the precision of an N64 stick, and as these are running via emulation, PC does a better job.
@broskiplays i hope youre being sarcastic.
@jsw-8 go play another game
people stop complaining if youre gonna buy it.
opinions are fine belly aching is not an opinion.
go play another game if youre gonna be negative. Let people enjoy things
@NintendoPok My opinion.
I love Super Mario 64 and Galaxy 1 so this was always a must-buy for me but I'd be lying if I said I'm not really disappointed they left out Galaxy 2 and there's not even news if it will be available as DLC or something else which is just crazy to me. Imo, it's the best of the 3D Mario games.
@Trajan Great argument
@Trajan oh no. Its great. Everything we ever needed in a collection. Does a great job based on what we've seen
@Trajan Plenty of sticks are better than N64, especially with plastic debris in it. That's why Joycon drift is an easter egg, not a defect.
@NintendoPok did you mean me or someone else?
I'm looking forward to this game and I thought I was clear on that?
@NintendoByNature super mario 64 holds a special place in my heart being the first game I played and it was my favorite for a while but I realized something eventually: it hadn't aged perfectly. It aged well yes and is fun with simple gameplay but the most objectively perfect one is galaxy 2 with my favorite being galaxy 1.
@Ghostchip it was actually the first game that blew me away back when I was 10 or so. So same here. But I barely played galaxy so im looking forward to it.
I can understand that some people expect more features out of the collection. I'm fine with what we get though. Sunshine and Galaxy look lovely in HD, I'd even go so far and claim Galaxy in HD looks better than Odyssey which is crazy. Mario 64 looks also a lot better and you have to keep in mind it's an early 3D game from the 64. You'd need a full on remake to make it not look bad.
Anyway, I cannot wait to (re)play 3 of the best games in the history of gaming.
@ALinkttPresent The difference between a 9 and 10 is nothing when the meaning behind anything above an 8 is essentially a “must play”. The point is, these games are great and worth playing whether the score is a 9 or 10.
Surely this gets 11/10 or even 30/10 right? What’s with giving three of the greatest games of all time only 9/10? Pffft! I’m leaving this site (I’m joking NL I love you really).
@NintendoByNature sure, but $60? At best it should be $30. And this collection is better on their original hardware, or emulated on a pc, or even a mid range phone.
@HobbitGamer that’s why lubricating them is essential. If lubricated, the sticks don’t degrade. All of mine are still tight. And yes, the precision on a tight 64 stick is unparalleled.
We have still not had a leap in gaming like we did going from 2D to 3D and SM64 was at the forefront, creating the new industry standard. For this reason and many others unless we have another technological leap of such magnitude, SM64 will always be the greatest game of all time (closely followed by OoT). You may disagree, that’s allowed on the interweb but I don’t what to hear about it.
Honestly, I'm just chuffed to bits that Super Mario Sunshine is out again. Extra features? I'll whine about that after I've had a blast getting 100% on this again.
The Wii U was designed to also play Wii games (though you couldn’t use the gamepad to control Wii games). So they could charge $20 for Wii ROM dumps in the eShop (such as Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid Prime Trilogy). No extra work was needed.
There is just a certain amount of work the devs need to do in order to make these games playable on the Switch. It is not unreasonable to charge $60 for three mainline Mario 3D games from the N64, GC, and Wii.
@DoktorTotenKopf
I have rights to say my scoring about 3D Mario games.
Who the heck are you?!
Sounds like Sunshine and Galaxy took a downgrade in the controls.
@NintendoByNature No I'm not, its a collection of great games, but its not a great collection of great games. It's certainly worth the money, but I own all these games already.
@NintendoArchive cmon now 😉. This is happy times.
People still expect games to be priced relative to how much work has gone into them?
Quaint.
@broskiplays mario 64, sunshine are all extremely good. they’re one of the best videogames out there so this was kind of expected. You’ve got to be very salty to give these three games a bad ratinh
@BirdBoy16 Oh it's the usual. A bunch of neckbeards crying because it doesn't fit their microscopic acceptance threshold which no normal human being would ever even notice, and people excited to get to play these games again on their Switch. I like to think I fall in to the latter category. I've never played Galaxy and this looks like a great way to play it.
Looking forward to the Zelda Anniversary 3D Compilation coming to Switch --> OoT, Majora's Mask, & Wind Waker!
At least, I'm hoping!
@Trajan a lot of nintendo games were rated horribly, but these are one of the best rated games of all time, of course they would be rated 9/10. And if you’ll complain about the price then listen to this, super mario 64 can sell at around 10 dollars on the wii u shop, sunshine is very rare and can sell at 400 dollars, mario galaxy can still be found in some modern stores at around 30-60 dollars, also also these games aren’t like super mario bros or sonic the hedgehog, these are extremely good game that hold up very well today in terms of gameplay, i mean if mario galaxy or sunshine came out today (with modern graphics of course) they would still be just as (if not more) good as other modern games, just because they’re old doesn’t mean they don’t hold up, also prices don’t get put into reviews anyways because that makes the review very prone to getting dated as prices tend to change as times go on.
@Lone_Beagle I enjoyed playing through Wind Waker HD on the Wii U, I never finished OoT and never touched Majora's Mask, that would be a great compilation with a bit of a spruce!
@Clyde_Radcliffe it would have been ridiculous, greedy and lazy for Capcom to have released those games with some minor improvements on the PS3 and Xbox 360 while charging the same price as a new game. For the price they’re asking the consumer should be getting far more.
Not off topic but...we need to give our honest input to how we feel about this collection in case they plan to give Zelda the same treatment for its anniversary next year...!
@Lone_Beagle Since the 3DS already got OoT and MM ports, Skyward Sword is the most likely one to make a reappearance next year.
Super Mario 64 is my favorite game of all time, and I...just can't justify buying this game.
I've played these games numerous times. I still own Galaxy for Wii. Playing these games on Switch would be a nice treat, still, but the real reason to own this set--especially for $60--is for collection's sake. And this isn't much of a collection. Even setting aside the absence of Galaxy 2, there just isn't much effort put into 3D All-Stars. It's closer to something a couple fans might have done on a PC emulator than a proper celebration of Mario's 35th.
Why am I not surprised that people are moaning about one game that isn’t included instead of talking about the 3 that are!
@HobbitGamer @Zuljaras One of my first PC gaming experiences was flight sims, obviously with a flight stick.
I played PC shooters like Half Life and Duke Nukem. I played single stick console shooters like Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. When the xbox and Halo CE first came out I went round a friend's to play split screen. It was my first twin stick FPS experience, and I spent the first 15 mins looking at the floor. I just couldn't wrap my head around the right stick. On a whim I inverted the Y axis, and bam. It clicked. My brain could process how to control my camera.
I've played inverted ever since. Much to the annoyance of my friends, my nephews, my Fiancée, and now even my son whenever they attempt to play on my accounts.
Such a shoddy collection imo
@Tuney lol u mad.
Sunshine sells for $60. I bought a copy last year complete for $40.
By all means buy these overpriced Roms. It’s your money. I already have these games.
@Trajan so sunshine is 40 dollars, add it with mario 64 which is for 10 dollars, mario galaxy for 60 dollars. Yeah I don’t see how they’re overpriced.
@Clammy I'm wondering the same thing. I could never get into Mario 64 because of the camera. I'm still on the fence about getting 3D all stars. A visual upgrade alone isn't really worth it for me. I expected some performance upgrades too. Disappointing for some, but Nintendo have already sold tons of copies anyway so I guess why should they bother putting any effort into this?
Gimme, Gimme, Gimme my Sunshine!
@Tuney because these are just virtual console games. Crash and tony hawk remakes are $40. These are just the game with a built in emulator for $60.
Plus regardless of how limited (or not) this game is, it won’t have the demand that original copies do.
Game collectors want original copies, and speed runners have to use original hardware usually.
‘Nearly 100 hours of joyous platforming to be had.’
Or 100’s of hours if you’re not very good at 3D platformers, like me. ☺️
The inability to invert camera controls in Sunshine probably means that - despite purchasing the game - I'll have to go even longer yet before fully playing it (I played it for maybe an hour back on the GC and that was about all I could take).
Individually, Mario 64 and Mario Galaxy were 10/10 games. In a package with Mario Sunshine, it's 9/10.
@ALinkttPresent I’d say in the case of galaxy it’s because the controls sound a bit off the mark. It may look better but it sounds like it may have some nuances in gameplay. These games are all classics but it does seem Nintendo rested on their laurels with this one. The lack of widescreen for Mario 64, a bit more customization options for control in galaxy, and of course galaxy 2 would’ve been nice.
I guess its hard to give a low score to those incredible games
I don't understand why in Mario Galaxy the left c buttons on the Switch in handheld mode can't control the camera and the right analog stick can move the star icon. Or, why I can't move the system around when playing handheld. Not too pleased with being forced to use the touch screen.
Wait, the "So long, King Bowser" (sure) line is gone? That's like the best line in the game! It loses a star for that alone!
Looking forward to all these as was taking a playstation tour when all three of these came out and came back to Nintendo for the Switch after playing BOTW on my son's Switch...needless to say 2 weeks later bought my own Switch!!
@Ashunera84 No, they do not hold up extremely well. If only they had fixed the biggest problems with these games by adding a good automatic camera option and polishing up Sunshine's physics...
@shazbot @dkxcalibur And this is why you shouldn't dump your old consoles just because you got a new one. Anyone who kept their Wii can just pick up "Galaxy 2" from eBay, a used game store, rent it from a library, etc. For Wii U owners, it's even easier, as you can just buy a digital copy for $20 (or the approximate equivalent).
@BulbasaurusRex Sure, but I've moved continents at least 4 times since 2009 (as mentioned here), and currently don't even have a TV, hence the Switch being my console of choice.
I'm not going to rearrange my life, order a game off eBay, find my old Wii somewhere in a box on another continent and buy a TV with AV cables to play one game.
I would much rather just pickup a Switch port.
That said, I also haven't thrown any of my consoles away, they're just gathering dust somewhere.
@BulbasaurusRex You are the exception, though. Most Switch owners did not even buy a Wii U (there is a reason it wasn’t successful) and most no longer have a Wii or GC. Nor do they have old TVs or modded consoles for HD support. This will allow a new generation to experience these games.
M64 has been the most accessible between the DS port and Wii VC. Sunshine has been the least accesible, needing the GC disc with a GC or OG Wii.
@Ghostchip There would still be just as much whining if Galaxy 2 was included, make no mistake. Some people on here have such a negative "glass half empty" attitude about everything it's surprising they get any enjoyment out of their games at all.
9 is too much for 3 emulated games where 2 of them is running with speed hacks causing glitches.
If Mario 3D World were included, it would be different.
@shazbot That's an acceptable excuse, but you're in a very unique situation.
@Tandy255 No, I'm in the majority who keep their old systems when new ones come out so that we can still play older games like "Galaxy 2" without requiring a modern port or remaster. Even if they skipped the Wii U, most Nintendo gamers (the smart ones) kept their Wiis around (which aside from the unpopular Mini model also play GameCube games), and they are perfectly playable on modern TVs save for a little blurriness and a little input lag (and those who care enough about those issues will just get a cheap CRT for it and other retro systems). It's your own fault that you didn't do the same.
It's great that these games are now conveniently available on Switch, but they didn't need to figure out how to make Yoshi work to include "Galaxy 2" just to pander to the foolish gamers out there.
@Ventilator that's the thing, they 100% should have gotten someone else to review it. Makes no sense to have this guy do it.
@Rhaoulos Sunshine is better than Galaxy. This is coming from someone who skipped out on it first.
@nintendope64 Yeah. This is the sloppiest release so far from Nintendo. This is a rush job all the way. Would be worth it if the games ran natively, and Mario 64 were remade into Unreal 4 engine. Or at least included Mario 3D world to make it worth the 60 bucks price tag. But no. Thats a standalone 60 bucks game which were cheaper on Wii U many years ago. Should have been 30 bucks on Switch as they only added one new level or something.
Super Mario Sunshine is way better emulated on PC, and you can change axis too. I run it in Widescreen, 60 fps at 1440p on PC.
It also runs perfect in 4K/60 on my PC.
There is no need for me to purchase this collection at all as i bought all 3 earlier consoles.
For comparison.
Rare Replay on Xbox One had 30 games for only 30 bucks on release. That included a bunch of Xbox 360, Xbox, NES, SNES, N64 and Arcade games.
Anyways. Mario 3D Collection emulated at 60 bucks should have had 6/10 review at best.
Compared to Rare Replay...2/10 review.
Rare Replay on Xbox One had 30 games for only 30 bucks on release. That included a bunch of Xbox 360, Xbox, NES, SNES, N64 and Arcade games. All for only 30 bucks.
Thats how Microsoft celebrated Rare after 30 years.
Nintendo charged 30 bucks extra for 27 less games.
I don't understand why some people think this release is a good deal.
It's still a load of crap that Mario galaxy 2 isn't included. You can't call it mario 3D all stars without all the 3D main games. Somebody should straight up ask Nintendo so where's mario galaxy 2?
@BulbasaurusRex Absolutely! I still own both systems. My days of trading in systems and every game for it in order to afford the next new system and one game are far behind me. But at the same time, I tend to fully move on when I make the jump. So when I went full in on the Switch, I may have touched my Wii U maybe twice. Also, my preference is to play on the Switch with it's ability to play on the TV when no one is using it, or in another room because the TV's not available.
I think it's weird that G2 isn't in this collection. Like really weird! Unless their doing a HD remake of that game, I don't understand why it's not included. Which leads me to believe it's coming as a future unlock.
@Kimyonaakuma You're probably right, but I remember reading somewhere that there was enough unused space to have included Galaxy 2 on the cart.
@Ventilator I completely agree. I absolutely love these three games, but as a collection 9/10 is a complete joke of a score. Especially when you consider the amount of effort that went into the original Super Mario All-Stars.
Between this, the Paper Mario review and the NBA 2K21 review I think I'm pretty much done as regards reviews on this site. Stop being afraid to dock marks for games that are lacking. It's a terrible habit.
Even moreso if you're speaking for the site as a whole (which I despise by the way. It couldn't be more obvious that just one freelancer is sitting in his house playing a free code. I don't like the faux team they try to create with "we" did this and "we" loved that. This isn't 90s CVG).
@BulbasaurusRex I wasn’t speaking for myself. I borrowed Sunshine from a friend, so I never owned it. However, I still have my Wii U hooked up. I sold most of my Wii games, but I still have physical copies of Galaxy 1 & 2.
I was speaking more of new generations. The 10 year old kid playing Switch won’t have the old consoles. Also, if you live in a small apartment (e.g. Japan), you probably won’t be a console collector.
People also justify pirating ROMs because Nintendo was not re-releasing them for modern systems. Nintendo is making these games available in a legal and affordable way. It may be redundant for you, but it is great for the majority of Switch owners. Now they are easily accessible to play at home or on the go.
@Kezza64 It's ok to think sunshine is good, as long as you also admit that you're wrong.
@Wexter Physical sure, but digital should be much cheaper.
@StevenG There are laws that keep Nintendo from doing that or any company from doing that. It would be considered unfair competition and Nintendo would be in serious hot water with every major retailer who they still need to sell their hardware. Or potentially open themselves up to a civil suit.
I remember this being a major discussion during the Xbox 360 and PS3 generation when retail games were first being sold on digital storefronts. The main reason at the time is still at play today which is unfair competition.
https://www.ftc.gov/tips-advice/competition-guidance/guide-antitrust-laws/single-firm-conduct/predatory-or-below-cost
@Trajan again, these are one of the best rated games in the history of games, no offense to spyro and crash but they’re just standard good games, these games are comparable to masterpieces, mario 64 built the path to 3d platformers, mario sunshine reinvented platforming, and mario galaxy has to be seen to be believed, these games are all extremely incredible so it makes sense why they would be comparable. I mean comparing the spyro collection to these games is like comparing a steak to a high class dish, they’re both great but one is significantly deserving of a higher price
@Retro_Player_77 2 of them were on WiiU virtual console. Again, they can celebrate - but they can also make it a bit more consumer friendly.
Sure, the games is great, but wery poorly done.
They should at least have added all NES and SNES games in the collection too + Mario 3D World and the 2D one from Wii U.
It sure is a joke release vs Rare Replay on Xbox One. Mario All-Stars is like something a site would use on april fools day.
Original All-Stars did get remakes on SNES as you say to celebrate. Nintendo stopped caring after Wii U where Nintendo did a great job on new games.
Reviewers can't always be trusted anymore. If they give a game a bad score, they won't get more review codes.
Also. If they give a bad review, the publisher will also remove all ads on their site.
How can reviewers be honest nowadays?
In this 9/10 case. They reviewed the games instead of the cheap and sloppy release. As i mentioned it's of very low value vs Rare Replay too. Here is all the games including systems they are from.
6 of them is from Xbox 360 alone...

Digital Foundry just did a tech analysis of Mario All-Stars on Switch. Whats even the point? They are emulated and NOT ported.
There is nothing to analyze when they are emulated.
@Agramonte The Wii U was always backwards compatible with Wii games. Bringing Wii games to the VC was easy. The Switch is a different story and needs more work to get these games up and running.
You may think it is priced too high, but I think 3D All Stars is a better value than the Link’s Awakening remake (both priced at $60).
I have 3D All Stars preordered. I bought a used copy of Link’s Awakening for $45.
@jsw-8 I’ve been hoping they’d switched the control axis. I had a hard time getting used to that years ago when I tried to play on my GC.
I predict Nintendo will re-release Galaxy 2 next year as a standalone download or physical version, with updated hi-res graphics, and maybe as an exclusive to the "Switch Pro" console they are working on.
@Wexter I don't see how that applies. Any retailer would be selling digital only games for the same price. Target sells digital games too.
@StevenG Here is the thing let's say Nintendo sold Mario 3D-All Stars at $40 on the eShop, but retail copies were $60. The extra markup can be explained by the need for shelf space, overhead costs like staff, rent and purchasing the game from Nintendo giving them a cut of the profits. Your argument is retailers can sell digital copies too at the same price.
However, who would go to a Bust Buy to purchase a digital copy of Mario 3D-All Stars for $40 when they can get it from the eShop for the same price without having to drive to the store, buy the code, enter the code and wait for the download? And then for the most average consumer (ignoring physical collectors who are the main market for stuff like Limited Run), why buy a physical copy from retailers for $60 when the degitial version is much cheaper? This can be seen as Nintendo squeezing retailers to force them to sell physical games to match Nintendo's eShop prices at a much thinner profit margin.
Let's say Nintendo did this for Breath of the Wild 2 or Metroid Prime 4? Consumers would just buy from the eShop to get the hotly anticipated Nintendo games for cheaper than brick and mortar retailers. Potentially causing irreparable damage to the industry as other 3rd parties would just do the same if there are no legal consequences. Nintendo would be the target for several anti-trust lawsuits as seen as purposefully trying to direct consumers to their proprietary storefront. Since Nintendo has no overhead cost they can charge far cheaper prices than retailers at unfair and predatory prices which cannot be matched. Since running a retail store is already expensive as is most stores will just stop carrying Nintendo games and now Nintendo controls the prices not the market. In the short term having digital games being cheaper sounds great, but once the publisher control full distribution of a product from conception to the end-user that power can be abused. I.E. Marvel Comics of the 1990s which I remind you caused the near-death of a beloved American institution!
And if Nintendo can do this what makes you think Sony or Microsoft wouldn't? Notice how this line of thinking can cause massive damage to the industry? Or open Nintendo up to several anti-trust lawsuits? This is already the end goal of the video game industry as is, but you notice how quickly the slop you're suggesting of retail games charging premium prices over digital goods can lead to more damage to Nintendo than it can help them? Or at worst! Turn video games into the same sorry state American comics are in! At one point American comics were one of the fastest growing entertainment form in the world! Now they are at best an IP farm for Waner Bros and Disney as nothing more than the source material they base their movies on.
And before anyone comments saying I'm fear-mongering with my TLDR post above. Take a look at American comics of the early-mid 1990s and now look at video games and tell me you do not see a similarity. Not saying the industry will crash the same way but... the parallels are apt.
@Wexter The same people who do it now.
Kids, those without credit cards, those with gift cards to spend. People grab them when physical runs out.
This is nothing new.
The point is if physical is the same price you would have to be stupid to buy the digital copy. Just for resale and usage in 20 years.
The movies you speak of are 100 times better than the marvel dreck of the 90s.
The 90s cartoons were better than those comics. Comics had been on a downward spiral for far longer. They couldn't attract the writing talent needed and instead tried to replace it with art.
@StevenG You do realize that is maybe 3-5% of digital purchases are through those cards? They are more impulse purchases or for digital-only games that publishers send out for exposed purchases. But, what you are suggesting opens any company up to major anti-trust lawsuits. So it won't happen while companies still sell physical media.
Also, the 80s under Jim Shooter had some of the best runs in comics. The 90s got terrible because of the business practices being employed by Marvel to stretch story-arcs to make bank at the cost of the reader and speculator gouging. Doesn't change the fact the bad business practices of the 90s did irreversible damage to the industry.
@Rhaoulos
God forbid someone have a differing opinion!
Get with the times gramps! Look up egotism while you're at it.
I have not played any of these games before, so I was excited to finally being able to play them. I started with Mario 64 yesterday and while I very much like the graphics, music and level layout it is just so frustrating to get thrown out of the level and losing all the progress after every death. (That same thing was for me the reason to sell New Super Mario Bros. U after 2 days.) And I die a lot due to unexpected camera angles and slipping from a surface into nothing because I can't predict whether the tilt angle is too steep. So I'll return to Mario 64 if I ever have a month off and nothing else to do.
Started Sunshine now, and is there any way to flip the y axis of the camera controls? I'm a PC gamer used to 3D games and flight games and this should be such a simple thing.
GameCube controller can be used for Sunshine. Except you can't ground pound...
Although I had a gamecube for a couple years, I never played Sunshine, only saw snippets of the early levels of my cousin playing it (Also Eternal Darkness - That game seriously needs to be revived).
Now is my chance.
@StevenG Hey, just checking in. I know that you think that I'm an anti-masker, but no, I was just saying dumb things trying to make a point. I apologize.
@HotGoomba No worries.
I think we just disagree on what nintendo should be doing. I want to see consoles for adults, and clearly there is some demand for kids consoles with plastic screens and low cost above all else. I think a pro and normal/lite would solve this.
@Wexter The industry is now better than ever. As much as the neckbeards cry the 2020s are far better for comics than the 90s.
I still don't think anti-trust applies. If anything apple has proven that with their one market for their devices. No company is obligated to sell physical media, nor is it obligated to price it the same as digital downloads.
Don't quote me on this, but Galaxy 2 not making the cut was probably because of its frantic pointer controls during most Yoshi stages. It's way harder and more complex to adapt to the current touchscreen solution we have for Galaxy. Watch some gameplay videos and you'll understand what I mean.
I can overlook Nintendo excluding bonus content that one might expect in a 35 anniversary collection; it's cheap but somewhat expected. What's you're really buying into is the game though, and excluding the option to invert the y-axis in Sunshine is just uber lazy programming.
@StevenG The comic industry is dying. Like I love comics as much as the next guy (I've got a trade of Chip Zdarsky's Daredevil waiting to be read next to me), but with how popular the MCU is you'd expect comics to be even livelier in the market than they were in the 90s. A lot of 90s comics were bad mostly because of out of touching marketing departments and I don't think too many people will state otherwise. You'd expect comics nowadays to be in a new renaissance of profit and sales, but they are not. They are selling at a fraction of what they did in the 90s and they are selling about as well as they were in the 70s.... at five times the cover cost and with their reader-base halved. With the recent mass layoffs at DC and Marvel cancelling runs... COVID may have finally been the thing that killed American comics. Now I'm leaving out Japanese Manga and French Comics out of this as comic books are not dying just the American Comic industry.
The thing is no company wants to risk Anti-Trust lawsuits for the reasons I've stated. And yes all-digital is the future of gaming (there is a reason if you look at the PS5's design the disc drive looks like an afterthought), but when we do get there... I don't think it will be as great for the consumer as you think it will be. There is a market for CDs despite Apple as record stores fit a nice niche. But, record players and CD players are not reliant on proprietary hardware like games and that is why anti-trust against Nintendo is far more real than Apple who is not even a music publisher. Apple only provides a digital storefront to sell music they do not produce music and that is where the fine line exists that keeps Apple out of the courthouse because they cannot decide the market prices and they do not sell the end product to the record stores for digital music there are valid competitors like Spotifiy and Google Music Store.
I'm very happy with this game. It feels like special editions of each game, and if it hadn't been pointed out that it was emulation, I wouldn't have noticed. The original All-stars is one of my favourites for SNES even though I prefer SMB 1 and 3 on NES. Same thing here. I prefer 64 on the 64, and Sunshine has recently gotten new life with the Sunburn romhack, so I'll finish playing it there. But Galaxy... Oh my it looks and feels good, it's worth the asking price alone. Much easier to get along with the pointing 'nonsense' with the Switch controllers and touch option. All in all I agree with the review - this is great.
@Kezza64 First degree team hello
Sunshine is nowhere as good as the other 2. You just like it better. There is a huge difference between liking something more and something being better, it's the difference between fact and opinion. Just like being a flat earthed doesn't make the earth flat.
@Rhaoulos so you're passing your opinion off as fact, trying to tell me it is a worse game, no? Who decides whether it is a good game or not? Clearly the consumer and critical majority disagree with you.
It is still not my favourite mario but people on the internet love making assumptions.
Sunshine is a lot more fun with these improvements, by the way. Great collection.
Got it now. Have to say i’m so happy mario 64 is now legible... always thoguht the text fonts really ruined the experience for me.... completely spoiled the immersion. Really liking the sharp
Imes too
Mario sunshine.. difficult to control the water at times.. but that might have bene the case anyway
Mario galaxy.. nobody has ,entioned yet the joycom solo
Ution ia really awlward for left handed people lole myself. With the wii you could switch the wiimote... but now you have to aim with you wrong hand...
Imagine releasing a 3d game in 2020 without the option to invert (or not) the controls.
I'm very disappointed they un-inverted the aiming and looking controls, Sunshine is more or less unplayable for me now, and it's also irritating when looking around in 64.
Inverted y-axis is how Nintendo taught people to play 3d games, all their japanese developed games have it, and almost all N64 games had it (Mario 64, Pilotwings, the 4 Turok games, Duke Nukem 64...).
Sympathies to the people hating on this game, but I feel absolutely elated with it. I'm often bed ridden with really bad spinal pain, and video games/books (fiction in general) help me escape it a bit. Replaying my favorite Mario game, Sunshine (yes, aware I'm in the minority over considering this the best Mario game), especially in handheld, has been like a dream come true for me. Nine stars easy from my corner for that alone. The one missing star is for the thing I feel gamers truly have a point to gripe about, yet I've seen only a handful do so: It's not the fully expanded Mario 64 for 3DS, complete with Wario as a playable character, extra stars, and areas entirely new from the original. Was really hoping for that version; really don't care about the extra function on the title screen....ability to toss Bowser into a bomb with Wario would've been amazing.
Even though I thought I loved all 3 games, I can't help but feel completely underwhelmed by the package overall. To call it bare bones would be an understatement. The menu looks like it was thrown together in 5 minutes and 64 and Sunshine have not aged well.
The best thing about this package is Galaxy in HD, and it makes the lack of Galaxy 2 even more obvious and painful. I think a 9/10 for this minimal effort collection was far too generous, both for those if us who've played them and for those who never have. That score sets the bar waaaaaaaaaay too high for people who are new to these games. My guess would be most people won't stick with 64 and Sunshine due to their clunkiness.
WHAHAHAHAHA A 9 FOR AN EMULATOR YEESHHH NOT EVEN QOFL UPDATES FOR 64 and not 60fps for the gc I see why Nintendo keeps getting away with this, they know most keep buying it blindfolded
I can see why people would wanna buy this game. It is 3 good games for the price of one. But, why get this when you can get odyessy (which is the best 3D mario by this site's standards)? It seems fun, but Im not 100% convinced. More like 92.6%
@EmirParkreiner - I had the exact same experience. I had to pull up Mario 64 on VC just to confirm I wasn't crazy ... and yes, both Mario 64 and Sunshine have the controls swapped. If it was just the camera it would be bad enough but it's FOR FLUDD'S CONTROL as well in Sunshine. Unplayable is correct - insane that they would botch something this important. Ah well, if this isn't patched I'll just sell it next year for a profit thanks to the limited release. (Glad I went physical.)
If I were reviewing this game it would get a 4/10 as it currently stands. Graphical upgrades are nice, but if the gameplay is completely different from the original what's the point? Giving the option to invert the axis would bring it up to an 8/10.
Is anyone else noticing that this game just sips battery?
Played a lot last night and this morning (3-4 hours) in handheld for 64 and sunshine, and I'm at 50% on a gen 1.
Also, what do we think the chances are that this and jumprope challenge end up gated behind the MyNintendo Rewards, like with the picross stuff?
@Wexter I think digital games are terrible for the consumer. That is why they should be cheaper. They are an inferior good. They can't be resold and will have no value in a decade or two.
Comics simply can't compete with video games. There is a limited amount of entertainment time people have. If comics want to survive they should publish only a few times a year and work on the story more than anything else. They can't simply rely on being cheap and widely available as they did in the past. The market has more choices now and they must respect that.
Of course it got a 9 on this website..... Shocker. A 7 or 8 would be more deserving, but meh....this is called NintendoLife for a reason. Gotta appease the big boss and keep licking that boot.
Can anyone tell me if Mario 64 on the switch is 2 player?
I am looking forward to this game!
I'm having so much fun playing sunshine again. It looks just as good as i remember it.
Just began playing Galaxy.
I feel like pro controller method would work better if they made the d-pad control the camera and made the right control stick the pointer.
Doesn’t deserve more than a 6/10 in my opinion for one simple reason price. Literally 3 decades old games ported with next to nothing done with them yet not sold at a budget price is ridiculous. Even Crash and Spyro Trilogy where full remakes yet still sold at budget price. Don’t get me wrong these are classics but should be budget price simple as.
I bought this when it was released and still haven't started it. I'd much sooner have replaced Mario 64 for Galaxy 2. I can't understand why it wasn't included.
It needed Galaxy 2.
Also, the pressure-sensitive GCN controllers are very important on Sunshine. Why this didn't include GCN controller support like Smash does?
