Best Flip Phones of 2024
Once consigned to the archives of technological history, the flip phone has undergone a remarkable resurgence, blending nostalgic appeal with contemporary sophistication. Emerging from the shadows of obsolescence, the flexible-screen flip phones has become a new and fresh take on the compact smartphone, captivating both oldschool fans of the flip form factor and people seeking an alternative to the conventional slab-style design.

No longer relegated to the realm of rarity, flip phones now can be found in the wild, with several lineups from different brands making the rounds. Well, this comeback poises a question - which flip phone is the best out there? Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip series has been available for a couple of years now, while Motorola has decided to capitalize on nostalgia and resurrect the iconic RAZR lineup.

In this article we have tried to summarize and give you the best flip options, so you don't have to browse the internet until you hair goes gray. It's a developing list, and now we have another strong contender in the face of the Galaxy Z Flip 6. The flip smartphone market is volatile and new models are popping up constantly, and we also shouldn't rule out flip phones from the Far East. There's a new Honor flip in the works, so stay tuned for that, and check back regularly.

How We Rate Flip Phones?

We have a new comprehensive rating system that takes into account 12 different areas of the smartphone experience, including the camera, daily performance, battery life, etc. Furthermore, we have attributed different weight to each of these in order to arrive to the most objective smartphone rating (if there's even such thing).

When it comes to flip phones, the same rule apply, and if you want to delve into more detail, you should check out our Battery Score and our Camera Score systems. However, we have a couple of legacy devices on this list, and they're being retested as we type this. They still don't have ratings but we've arranged the list in such a ways that it reflects the overall position these devices will most likely get.

So, with this out of the way, let's get to the best flip phones!

The best flip phones in 2024, a summarized list:
  1. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6—the best Samsung flip phone to date
  2. Motorola Razr Plus (2024)—staying ahead of the competition

We're now six generations into the reimagined flip phone, and the latest and greatest from one of the pioneers in the industry is already here. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 made its debut on July 10, building upon the success of its predecessors. Samsung had it easy with its foldables in the past, but today the competition is fierce, and the Z Flip 6 is the answer to that competition.

The new phone comes with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, tuned "for Galaxy" at a higher clock rate, meaning it should be a tad faster than the regular Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 also sports a new 50MP main camera with an f/1.8 aperture, a long-awaited upgrade in the camera department. The battery is also substantially bigger in the new model at 4,000mAh (3,700mAh in the Galaxy Z Flip 5), and the hinge mechanism has been made stronger. Oh, and the crease is slightly less prominent on this model, as well.

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 is no doubt the best flip phone Samsung has to offer at the moment, and you can't go wrong by picking one. However, there are great options coming our way from companies such as Motorola, Honor, and Oppo, so Samsung might have to do better with the next iteration to stay on top.

Key Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 specs:
  • Inner Screen: 6.7 inches Dynamic AMOLED
  • Outer Screen: 3.4 inches
  • Main Camera: 50MP
  • Processor: Snapdragon 8s Gen 3
  • RAM: 12GB
  • Battery: 4,000mAh
  • Dimensions: 0.2mm thinner when folded

Motorola tried to resurrect the iconic Razr brand back in 2019, and it was a bumpy ride. Things started to change in 2022 when Motorola decided to take a slight design turn. The latest Razr phones offer a great, fully functional, and usable cover screen, a compact form factor, and competitive pricing. The Razr Plus (2024) is no exception. This model builds upon the success and popularity of the last year's iteration, and perfects an already great flip phone.

The Motorola Razr Plus (2024) comes with improved styling, a better hinge, a larger and brighter cover screen, faster charging, and a strange wide-telephoto dual camera system. That's right, the Razr Plus (2024) swaps the ultrawide camera for a telephoto. Pair those cool stats with a sub-$1000 price tag, and you have a clear winner. Even the Galaxy Z Flip 6 has a hard time competing with the Razr.

This model only ranked second on our list after the Galaxy Z Flip launched and changed the game a little, so expect next year Motorola to strike back!

The non-Plus Razr this year took the flip game to a whole new level. Granted, it needed to cut some corners in order to maintain the crazy $699 price tag, but the end result is still a very wholesome device.

The main screen is a big 6.9-inch flexible display that can refresh with up to 120Hz, and the cover screen has grown to the respectable 3.6-inches and gained additional functionality. The processor inside is a MediaTek, but it's powerful enough for all daily tasks you can throw at it.

When you add the big 4,200mAh battery, the fast charging, and the potent camera system, you get a winning formula. This phone easily takes the bronze on our list, mainly thanks to the great value it offers.

Key Motorola Razr (2024) specs:
  • Inner Screen: 6.9 inches OLED
  • Outer Screen: 3.6 inches
  • Main Camera: 50MP
  • Processor: MediaTek Dimensity 7300X
  • RAM: 8GB
  • Battery: 4,200mAh

Samsung once was at the forefront of foldable smartphone technology, and even though in recent years the company lagged behind a bit, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 rectifies most of the issues we had with previous models. It has a bigger and more usable cover screen, a fast Snapdragon processor, and now closes almost without a gap.

Granted, the Z Flip 5 is yet at the level of usefulness of the Motorola Razr Plus phones, when it comes to the cover screen, but the company is getting there through third-party support for the cover display widgets.

Now that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is official, some might argue that the previous generation might be the better deal, especially if you spend a little time hunting for a good promo. The upgrades are not huge on the new model, and the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is still a very competitive flip phone. Just watch out for Galaxy Z Flip 5 deals out there.

Key Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 specs:
Inner Screen: 6.7 inches OLED
Outer Screen: 3.4 inches
Main Camera: 12MP

There are two main things that annoy people when they try a flip-fold phone for the first time. One, obviously, they need to flip the phone open, and two, the main display is tiny and you can't do a lot on it. The Motorola Razr Plus takes care of the second one and mounts a serious challenge to the veterans on the foldable market, such as the Galaxy Z Flip 5, and even the newly announced Galaxy Z Flip 6.

This phone has one of the largest and most usable cover screen in any foldable of this form factor (beaten only by its successor - the Motorola Razr Plus 2024 with its 4.0-inch cover screen). The 3.6-inch front screen offers a lot of bells and whistles—you can type on the full-sized keyboard, call someone, launch an app, watch a video, and do pretty much everything you need to do without opening the phone. Which takes care of the first issue from above.

Further down the specs sheet, the Razr Plus offers a bright and vivid 6.9-inch main display with a 165Hz refresh rate, a flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, a hefty 3,800mAh battery, and two decent cameras on the back. What's not to like? Take notes, Samsung!

Key Motorola Razr Plus (2023) specs:

Foldable phones are great and all, but there's been a compromise going on for generations now—the camera. The thing is, to make the flip phone thin and light, you need to sacrifice a few things, and the camera is often the first to go. Well, not anymore, because Oppo has launched the successor to its popular and very well-received Find N2 Flip model.

The Oppo Find N3 Flip expands on the idea of a do-it-all flip phone with a great cover display and a Hasselblad-branded main camera. The Find N3 Flip might just be the first flip phone with a triple camera system, we're talking about real camera, not depth sensors or other excuses for increasing the camera count.

There's a 50MP main camera, a 48MP sensor under the ultrawide lens, and a dedicated 32MP telephoto snapper with optical zoom! The phone also comes with a Dimensity 9200 chipset, 12GB of LPDDR5x RAM, and 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage, both upgrades from the memory specs of its predecessor. The 4,300 mAh dual battery and fast 44W charging are carried over.

Let's not forget that flip phones were designed to look like a makeup compact (also called a flapjack). Of course, we can't say that a certain smartphone model is girly anymore, but we can say that the Huawei P50 Pocket is a very stylish device that our author Iskra (who happens to be a girl) liked very much.

It's an exercise in vanity to some extent, but in a world where smartphones are so similar and sometimes plain boring, we're all for little panage. The Huawei P50 Pocked has a great screen, a very capable camera system, and fast wired charging.

On the negative side, this phone comes with an older Snapdragon 888 chipset and without 5G capabilities, and, of course, it doesn't have Google Services onboard. This thing looks pretty, though.
