I am passionate about working with people who are seeking professional and compassionate support to address areas of distress in their lives - including anxiety, depression, grief, stress and substance use concerns, etc. I believe that people are generally resilient and, at times, require support to inventory their coping skills - by tweaking existing skills and/or adding new tools to their coping toolbox - in order to live balanced lives. I can provide treatment for diagnosed or suspected acute trauma, mood and anxiety disorders.

I have been providing collaborative mental health and addiction services for youth, adolescents and adults in the Ottawa Region for the past 18 years. I work closely with individuals and families to identify the best treatment plans to meet their unique needs. Some techniques I use include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Collaborative Problem Solving, Mindfulness Integrated CBT, Trauma Practice and Addiction Issues. I use an assertive care approach which can provide some support between sessions, as needed, for clients to meet their goals with non-life-threatening mental health challenges. Many clients have found this very helpful.

Others participate because they feel the pace of their complex lives is out of control. The program is for anyone who would like to learn to relate more consciously and compassionately to the challenges of everyday life. Next program commences May 7, 2014. Warm hello, if you are on this site for yourself or a loved one, it may be helpful to know that people seek my services for help with stress, depression, anxiety, pain, trauma, grief and loss. I value the role of humour and compassion to support personal growth and optimal well-being. I believe that life's difficulties are workable and can teach us a lot if we can lean into the discomfort, interrupting our habitual patterns of avoidance, and to relate to our pain (physical or emotional) consciously and compassionately. It is my intention to support you to maximize your inner and outer resources.

Suffering is an inherent part of the human experience. However, we often feel that we are alone in our suffering, that no one can relate to our experiences, or that we don’t deserve to find peace in our lives. This can create feelings of frustration and despair, and we begin to feel stuck, unable to connect with others. Fear of judgement, along with our vulnerabilities can keep us from reaching out when we need it the most. I am confident that every person holds an innate understanding of what they need to heal and grow. Grounded in compassion, humility, and curiosity, my aim is to co-create a safe, open space for self-exploration.

Since in our western culture therapeutic treatments are mostly represented in the form of individual psychotherapy, most therapists and patients overlook group therapy as a potential solution to the psychological suffering we, as humans, go through. Group therapy is as effective as individual therapy and can help patients overcome a large variety of mental health issues. Please, visit www.ottawagrouptherapy.com to learn about how to participate in the weekly in-person groups.

Accepting new patients. In-person sessions (Centretown). The goal of my treatments is not only to alleviate or extinguish psychological symptoms, but also to allow patients to better know and understand themselves. Working with an interpersonal psychoanalytic approach will lead you in the exploration of both conscious and unconscious experiences, which fosters a better functioning within your interpersonal contexts. I have been working with a large variety of patients of all ages, treating them not as a mere set of symptoms but as whole people with unique and unrepeatable stories.

Working in groups help to quickly overcome the shame and stigma surrounding men's violence in intimate relationships. There is power in speaking with others in the same boat, and in recognizing the shared plight of women. Many problems considered individual and psychological are recognized as common and social, requiring political solutions. Self-esteem is restored as women realize they've been duped by patriarchy's fictions into living partial lives, tolerating mistreatment, keeping silent, etc. Topics will include why women stay; the 8 types of abuse; brainwashing; anger as strength; impact on kids; how to avoid the same trap.

I was drawn to working with women in abusive relationships after two sexual assaults in my 20’s started me thinking about all the fear and trauma in women’s lives. Working in a battered women’s shelter, I realized many women are living under intolerable, often life-threatening conditions of control, threat and violence—and that it is the women, not their abusers, who are routinely judged and blamed, depicted as liars and mentally ill. I saw no pathology in the women coming to us for help. I saw bottomless grief. I saw terror, and shell shock, and women trying to protect their kids. I saw what can happen when women are not believed.
