Having navigated life for many years as a Mexican, Queer, and immigrant in Canada, I bring an inclusive, neuroaffirmative, and empathic perspective to my practice.
We usually don't seek psychotherapy when we are already feeling great. It often becomes a crucial step after trying everything else. In my approach to psychotherapy, I aim to create a safe and supportive space where we can discover new ways to negotiate your emotional needs. Our goal would be to enhance your well-being in all areas of your life—whether it's relationships, work, or enjoying your free time. Through psychotherapy, I've seen people undergo remarkable changes in how they see themselves and connect with others, leading to a deeper sense of fulfillment in life.

When you feel like you can’t be yourself, it hurts. Lots of things get in our way: abuse, systemic bigotry, feeling overwhelmed, or struggling to find motivation. Sometimes we even know what we want to be different, but somehow can't make it happen. Whether you're working through this on your own or with a partner, sorting through the challenge to find where to start can be really difficult.

Accepting NEW Clients: When faced with difficult life experiences, feelings of ‘not being good enough’ or memories of painful past events, it’s not uncommon to get stuck repeating the same old patterns as a way of trying to cope. Perhaps you struggle with anxiety, low mood, over thinking, avoiding feelings or doing too much of something (e.g., electronics, substances) or too little of something (e.g., rest, exercise, connection with loved ones). Ideally, you want to feel more at ease with yourself, making choices and decisions that serve your best, authentic interests vs. those of others.

Hi, my name is Steve Gates and I have been working in mental health for 15 years with 7 years working as a counsellor with the Nova Scotia Health Authority. In my work, I try to blend my training with your expertise about you. Using this approach, I have seen people make progress through situations that truly seemed impossible. In my experience, once people accept where they are and make realistic goals, they tend to make progress. The “feel better” part does seem to take time, but it tends to follow the changes.

Gender-based violence, restorative approaches and narrative therapy have led me to work internationally. Locally, I have spent 25 years working for a trauma-informed community-based organization and for the past fifteen I have also worked for the Canadian Armed Forces. Currently I continue to speak publicly and train others about domestic violence. I co-founded the Canadian Domestic Violence Conference when I saw a need to bring more light to the subject. I am available to help couples work through the damages caused by domestic violence as well as to help individuals repair the harm done to them so they can move forward.

I am trained in the Gott man method (level two).
I primarily work with those in relationships, both ro mantic and families, aiming to help people learn how to grow well in life individually and together. If you would like to strengthen a stagnant marriage, hedge against divorce, improve communication, or recover from an affair, I can help. I also work with children (ages 6 and up), teenagers, and family units navigating parenting issues, emotion regulation, ADHD, and trauma. Although I specialize in marriage and familes, I love working with individuals battling mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety, past trauma, grief, addictions, and more.

I have years of experience working with autistic communities and recognize that ND presentations can vary widely beyond male stereotypes (60%+ of the people I assess identify as wo men).
Looking for an adult autism assessment with a neurodivergent psychologist? Feeling dismissed by people who don’t understand medical trauma or how hard it is to stop masking? You have the right to feel accepted, heard, and believed—even during an assessment! I was “late-diagnosed” and understand how relieving it can be after decades of feeling misunderstood and exhausted. My assessments are thorough and the options were entirely designed by autistic people, who I routinely work with to refine things. You can do the entire assessment from home and take the time you need. Do a FREE self-screen on my site here: www.ndpsych.com

I work with clients who are curious about the functioning of their personality, who wish to understand better their desires and needs, as well as the way they cope with frustration and grief. I help my clients develop awareness of why it is they do the things they do, feel the way they feel and think the way they think. I aim to develop the possibility of making choices where automatism took place. By automatism, I speak of these relational patterns in which we find ourselves repeating similar uncomfortable dynamics without understanding why. So, in a broader sense, I work with patients wishing to understand themselves better.

Whether mental health problems are new to you or something you know quite well, they can be difficult to manage on your own.
In my sessions, I want clients to feel truly listened to. Therapy, in my view, is a space for a client to experience empathetic and genuine attention which may be rarely found in everyday life. With this kind of attention, people can face problems and develop strengths much more easily than on their own. Ultimately, my goal is to help people get to the point at which they can manage their mental health without me, by using the tools and skills we develop during our sessions.

Silver man believes your care comes first and he will work with you to find a day and time that works best for you (even if it’s on the weekend).
Dr. Silver man is currently accepting new patients for all types of psychological assessments. Dr. Silver man’s standard of care when it comes to psychological assessment is to make sure the patient feels empowered and has a robust understanding of their psychological data. He believes it is critical to patient care that everyone understands the control they hold over their lives and how they can use the help provided to make improvements based on their results. While patient history is important, Dr. Silver man relies more on number driven data obtained from internationally accepted norms, i.e.: Continuous Perfor mance Test.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
