My passion and experience for helping children and families who have experienced trauma and adversity led me to pursue a career in counselling. I use a relational approach and dyadic developmental psychotherapy approaches with youth and caregivers to help strengthen their relationships. My focus is on creating a safe and supportive environment where clients can explore their thoughts and feelings, and develop the skills they need to overcome challenges and thrive. I have worked with a wide range of clients, including children, teens, and adults who have experienced abuse, neglect, anxiety, and traumatic events.

Now accepting new clients both online and in our Cobourg office location. Within yourself, there is a part of you that knows life can be better, and that is how we begin, with that little spark of hope. I’m Lori and my therapy clinic is dedicated to providing support for depression, anxiety, ADHD, addictions, life transitions and emotional eating. One of our top priorities is creating a therapeutic environment that provides acceptance, comfort and a sense of security, because we get how hard it can be to finally relax enough to even find your voice, let alone speak your truth.

When we are chronically stressed or face an overwhelming event, all our body systems are affected. This can result in symptoms of anxiety, insomnia, poor digestion, chronic pain, irritability, poor concentration and relationship difficulties. It radiates into every part of life. In partnership, we work toward new engagement and vitality through awareness between memory, sensation, and emotion. To become better, you have to feel better, releasing stress and trauma. As a somatic therapist, I bring 35 years of counselling to effectively identify and resolve personal and professional challenges. I offer supplemental online video counselling.

I am both a Registered Psychotherapist (qualifying) and a Registered Nurse. I have specialized training working with families during the perinatal period, couples, self-esteem, people-pleasing, shame, trauma, anxiety, and neurodivergence. For counselling to be successful, I believe treatment must be centered on learning from and with each person, respecting and valuing your unique experiences, and learning what is important to you. While every person will have their mental health affected at some point in their life, some at multiple points, I believe mental health is achievable for all.

Seeing a therapist is more than just a tool during times of crisis, it's a powerful form of self-love. If you are looking for support for mental health struggles like anxiety or depression, or if you are looking for help so that you can keep moving forward in your life, I’m here to offer support. Before training as a therapist, I was a caseworker assisting survivors of human trafficking, domestic abuse, and refugees. This role deepened my understanding of the challenges people face to overcome harm and highlighted the incredible strength that truly anyone can show when provided with proper support and opportunities.

What we think of ourselves reflects our emotional pain, triumph, or trauma. When we have heart problems, we see a cardiologist, when have back pain, we see a doctor, but who do we see when our heart hurts? Who do we see when we have a hard time looking at ourselves in the mirror because of our relationship with ourselves? Showing up for everyone else but not yourself? Guess what beautiful soul? It's time to reclaim your life. Let's connect and rewire the unhelpful thinking patterns that lead to depression, anxiety and feelings of worthlessness. When was the last time you smiled so much it hurt?

She:kon/Hello! My name is Jenny Patterson and I am the founder of Bear in Mind Healing, a private practice based in Cobourg, Ontario. I believe that Mother Earth is a garden and we are the flowers (her children) and that part of my purpose is to help those flowers grow. One of the reasons why I love being a social worker and what drives me to do this work is my own lived experiences. What I find beautiful is being able to walk with folks on their healing journey for just a little while; creating that safe, nurturing space and connection.

Are you sick and tired of feeling sick and tired? Tired of the hiding and secrecy that surround your drinking. Even if you present well and have been able to manage your professional career, does self doubt or strong emotions have you turning to alcohol for a feeling of relief that is only short lived and leaves you worse off than before? Alcohol has become ubiquitous as a stress reliever in society but often leaves even worse scars and brings risk of unhealthy or unsafe behaviours, relationship ruptures and general suffering.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.

Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
