Through my 12 years of social work experience, I have worked with all age groups- from the beginning stages of life, through childhood and youth, into adulthood, and final stages of life. I have experience in trauma and precipitating symptoms of such, including- anxiety, sleep disturbance, relationship struggles, depression, risk assessment, as well as, grief and loss support. I have worked with clients on individual levels, with their partners (in support of relationships), and with their families. I have supported clients in their goals of alleviating symptoms that affect quality of life and relationships.

It can be difficult to reach out to a professional to open up about your inner world and learning to trust a therapist can be unnerving. A lot of people see therapy as a one-sided conversation, with little to no opportunity for interaction or authentic connection. Although calling a therapist can be intimidating, I don't believe therapy has to be an intimidating process. I can assure you that as a practitioner, I use a warm empathic approach to connect with in a genuine way. Life is too precious to surrender to unhealthy relationships, low self-worth, addiction, and trauma.

My passion is helping people who have sustained relational, attachment, and intergenerational trauma through childhood neglect, and/or sexual, emotional, physical, and spiritual abuse and assaults at any point throughout the lifespan. This trauma often shows up later in life as: intrusive thoughts, emotions, body sensations and flashbacks; an overall experience of sadness, shame, depression, anxiety, anger, loneliness; addictive, avoidant, and compulsive behaviours; and a loss of a sense of Self. It's important to know that there is nothing wrong with you! This is a normal response to terrible things that have happened to you.

Over the years I have worked with many individuals and families experiencing complex life challenges such as: PTSD; childhood trauma and related symptoms (eg. anxiety/depression/substance use/compulsive behaviors); interpersonal relationship challenges, attachment injuries and workplace stress related issues such as compassion fatigue and burnout. Clients who most benefit from my approach are those who are open to exploring their experiences with an open mind, a little self compassion and a lot of patience for the healing process with the goal of making meaningful changes in their lives.

When it comes to how I practice therapy, I believe that everyone can benefit from speaking to someone, and sometimes we need to speak to someone who is not directly affected by our processing. I also believe that most people can work through their issues on their own and may benefit from extra support to be a sounding board, give tools and strategies, and offer encouragement and compassion. That's where I come in. Together we can carve out a space in your busy life to work through whatever is going on and to create positive change.

I have experience working with clients of all ages, and especially enjoy working with children and teenagers.

Hi my name is Megan and I am a Counselling Therapist in PEI. I have a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. I was privileged to work in the non-profit sector for over 12 years, engaging with and supporting clients, creating, and delivering workshops and programs on aspects of caregiving, stress management, and grief and bereavement. My therapeutic approach is grounded in humanistic and person-centered theory incorporating aspects of positive psychology, narrative therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT) as appropriate. I believe each person has the capacity to change and grow especially when provided with a safe, collaborative, and non- judgmental therapeutic space.

October 2024: I have a few openings for in-person or online sessions: You want to feel seen with compassion and understanding. This helps create conditions needed to recover from anxiety, depression, grief, or other impacts of trauma. We may face family stress, loneliness, abuse, neglect, and injustices. Events may have overwhelmed you and to cope, you adapted patterns that are no longer wanted. You want to change and live with emotional freedom. If you are numbed out or in fight or flight mode you can learn to regulate your nervous system, process the past, and develop patterns so you can show up the way you want to in your life.

Everyone deserves to find a space where they can explore their challenges comfortably without fear of judgment. When we find the right space, we are able to let our guard down and turn our attention inward. It's in these moments that we notice shame, depression, anxiety and avoidance, among other coping mechanisms at play. My counselling philosophy is trauma-informed in that I believe there is a survival function behind the difficult emotions, behaviours and thoughts that we experience. I also believe that understanding how these adaptive coping mechanisms are serving us, helps us to move forward with our goals and values.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.

Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
