I use an integrative approach that is based on the individual needs of the people in front of me and begins with compassion and empathy. I believe forming a strong therapeutic relationship is key for therapy to be successful. Rooted in person-centered therapy, I use empathy, respect, humor, and curiosity to guide treatment. From there, I weave various evidenced based practices together like Solution-Focused, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment therapy, attachment theory and mindfulness strategies to challenge, empower, build insight and guide you to healthier ways of managing life.

Our deepest Self is good, creative and generative; we are beautiful and resilient beings, an integration of body, mind, spirit, and ancestry. Yet sometimes life’s challenges sabotage our joy or interrupt our purpose, leaving us feeling anxious, grieved, or manifesting destructive thought and behavioral patterns. These challenges are the daily de mands of navigating our chaotic world, but sometimes include other traumas such as violence, abuse, or family and inter-generational wounds.

I provide coaching and therapy for individuals on the autism spectrum, as well as parent coaching. I have been developing my program and approach for 30 years now. My clients learn to understand autism on a deeper level as I work with them on black-and-white thinking, expressing emotions, and the need for masking. My clients learn to prioritize flexibility from a heartfelt standpoint to achieve a better career, relationship, or social life. I also train parents to teach this process to their children, which can include even beginning language and addressing challenging behaviors for levels 2 and 3.

In addition, my EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) training turns out to be of essential help with many disorders such as Smoking Cessation, mild depressions, eating disorders and others.
Wolkig with all age groups, I offer my years of experience in helping clients achieve life enhancing changes. The hypnotic state allows a person to be more open to suggestion. So-called "POSTHYPNOTIC SUGGESTIONS" may improve treatments for many conditions, including: phobias, fears, anxiety, sleep disorder, PTSD, grief and loss. Hypnotherapy can help changing a person's behavior, such as smoking, biting nails, alcohol & drug addiction, obesity, low self esteem and relationship problems. Furthermore, hypnotherapy is particularly useful in treating pain and preparing for surgery. Hypnotherapy proves to be an excellent tool to enhance sport specific skills in golf, tennis, football, baseball and others.

Thus we are better able to manage life's vagaries; lessening consequences and self-harming behavior affecting our personal and professional lives.
Trauma takes many forms; often in the guise of unprocessed grief and loss. Loss of employment, financial insecurity, divorce, separation, domestic violence and abuse; all must be mourned. We become stuck; often not understanding our own reactions to people, places and things. Our partners, children, colleagues and superiors can appear to feel unfairly entitled to what we have to offer. Our ability to tolerate distress is limited.

Some of the therapies and techniques I draw from include dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), Gott man method, mindfulness-based approaches, and trauma-focused therapies.
My approach to therapy is compassionate, collaborative, and goal oriented to meet each client's unique needs. I believe that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to therapy, and that a flexible and individualized approach is essential for creating meaningful and lasting change. Having worked with individuals, couples, and families for over 12 years, I have developed expertise in addressing a multitude of challenges. These specialties include anxiety, depression, addiction, trauma, grief, loss, anger, and relationship issues.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
